I first used the generic pre-rooted rom. But currently change to Modaco, since he has been doing a bit more with the kernel and speeding up the ROM. Other then that, because i prefer to have my roms running out of the memory card which cannot be done with a generic pre-rooted rom.i've done nothing with the hero yet. no market etc.

I still have not upgraded my radio, since i find that i get good signals with it, and some people especially in the UK prefer to use other radios since they claim that it has better connection.
I would say this is a matter of trial and error, if you find there is nothing wrong with the radio, then stay with it, if you find a problem then try changing.
My contacts are all synced with my google hence i don't worry much about it, but i did use MyBackup Pro to save my sms and call logs.
