New release: Spellforce 2: Dragon Storm
QUOTE
The portals connecting the shattered islands of Eo start to collapse. The whole world is in panic and despair.

Spellforce 2: Dragon Storm is a refreshing “RPG meets Fantasy Strategy” combo, in which the RPG elements just enrich the awesome RTS experience. The GOG.com version of Dragon Storm is a stand-alone expansion to the second part of the game.

Chaos reigns over the mythical land of Eo and the Shaikans investigate the problem. Upon closer inspection they reveal ancient ruins of the long forgotten first race to walk the plains of Eo: the Shapers. Once the rulers of the world, the Shapers discovered the Essence of Magic, and the struggle to control the essence led to a civil war and the apparent extinction of their race. Shaikans awaken one of these ancients, the Creator, and now chaos spreads. The only ally the Shaikans can muster is the race that once saved Eo from the Shapers threat the Dragons, exiled long ago. This add-on expands the universe by adding the Sheikan faction, and also adds a new campaign, more loot, spells, and a complex crafting system. Revisit familiar grounds, meet friends from your past adventures in Eo (incl. The Soulbearer or Flink McWinter), and (of course) save the entire world from doom.

New release: SWAT 3 TGOTY

QUOTE
Continuing the saga of Police Quest comes SWAT 3, the squad-based tactical first person shooter.

SWAT 3 Tactical Game of The Year Edition is the first installment in the series that completely dropped the Police Quest name, bringing in SWAT founder Daryl F. Gates as primary consultant to ensure that SWAT 3 would be a realistic tactical simulation. The game’s goal was simple, but ambitious: resemble real life tactics and drills as closely as possible.

This game has players use the same equipment available to police officers, including flashbangs, lightsticks, breaching charges and the “opti-wand”—a nifty little camera on a telescopic wand that is the successor to the mirror-on-a-stick. As the leader of a 5-man SWAT team you’ll have to intervene in a lot of different scenarios from regular day to day police activities, like serving search warrants or apprehending a suspect, but as the story progresses you'll find yourself performing higher-stakes operations such as securing an United Nations conference in LA. Be ready to train in SWAT drills like proper room clearance procedures, arresting enemies, and patrolling your fire zones. Pay attention to the RoE so that you never have to wonder if that terrorist you just shot was an authorized or unauthorized use of lethal force.

SWAT 3 isn’t a game about trigger-happy bunch of cops. It emphasizes the life-saving role of the Strategic Weapons and Assault Team. It’s more of an “Arrest them all!” than a “Kill them all!” style of game.

Tactical GOTY Edition includes: 27 missions, new modifications, and an Advanced Tactics CD containing previously unreleased video footage. SWAT3: TGOTY was developed hand-in-hand with the Los Angeles Police Department SWAT unit. This superior edition also has an official mission editor for modders delight wink.gif

Gearbox Software owned Blade Runner videogame license

QUOTE
Gearbox Software owned the Blade Runner videogame license for a long while, but ended up not making a game based on the film due to the expense of the game; it would have bankrupted the developer.

According to Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, "Blade Runner was on (the list). We had it too and we were like, 'No, we can't.' That game would've cost like $40m to make and sold about 600,000 units - and that would have been the end of us.

"There's no rational business model that would have allowed that to make sense," he added. "If we'd made it with a business model that did work, it would not have been the Blade Runner game we all would have wanted."

The game would have even had input from Ridley Scott himself, had the project commenced.

The only game based on the Blade Runner license was a 1997 graphic adventure game of the same name, which had a high replay value due to the game randomizing elements (some of the characters would be human in one game, or a replicant in the other, including the protagonist Ray McCoy.) Sean Young, Brion James, James Hong, Joe Turkel, and William Sanderson reprised their roles in the game as well.

Behold Atlantis: The Lost Tales! You’re controlling Seth, selected as one of the Queen of Atlantis’ companions. The royalty is in danger and the newly found hero must save the day! The game consists of exciting exploration, clever quests, and challenging puzzles. Riddles are a common obstacle in the ancient land of Atlantis, but they’re not a radical pixel hunt for the correct item which will solve the riddle.
Experience the carefully designed and crafted world of an ancient civilization. The 360 ° look camera showcases the beautifully 3D rendered island of Atlantis. Take a stroll around the island to admire the breathtaking landscapes and landmarks. Find out the hidden mysteries, and overcome the challenges that await you. The whole Atlantis experience includes a sophisticated society, painstaking craftsmanship, imaginative inventions, and strange mythical equipment used by this ancient civilization.

Monkey Island Remakes Get Retail Combo Pack

QUOTE
Lucasarts will combine the previously digital-only HD remakes of its first two Monkey Island adventure games into a special edition retail package, the company said Friday.

Called the Monkey Island Special Edition Collection, the package will include both The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition and Monkey Island 2 Special Edition: LeChuck's Revenge, along with previously unpublished bonus features that include concept art from the games and pre-production materials from an unrealized feature film.

The collection will also include playable soundtracks for both games, the company said.

The Monkey Island Special Edition remakes present the original two adventure game classics -- originally released in 1990 and 1991 -- with an optional HD mode that redraws the original sprites, adds voice acting, and plays remastered music.

They are notable for allowing the player to switch back-and-forth between the original and the remastered versions on-the-fly. They were released for both Windows and Macintosh PCs, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles, and iOS devices.

The new compilation package will be released in Europe on September 9th for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Windows PCs. A release in other regions has not been announced at this time.

New release: Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc

QUOTE
The last part of the original Rayman trilogy is here to complete the franchise!

Rayman returns in full 3D with breathtaking visuals and unique design in Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc. Whether you’re surfing lightbeams through psychedelic visions or just smashing your way with your powered-up mighty fists, you know you’re rocking it old-school with this French-born superhero extravaganza.

Rayman must once again save his world from peril, but the threat comes from n unusual source this time: Globox, his trusty companion. The Lord of the Dark Lums, Andre, was eaten alive by Globox. Now the Hoodlums (servants of Andre) have sworn to rescue their master in distress and unleash a maelstrom of turmoil wink.gif Our French hero, valiantly overcoming his chronic limblisness, goes on a quest to find a cure for all this chaos. The game’s admirable design, challenging platforming zones, and a myriad of power-ups all combine with the intelligent humor of this epic franchise! Also, Teensies need Rayman’s help and they will pay you back with more health and a plethora of goodies you can unlock (including mini-games, humorous animations and an homage to the Rayman series:) We also advise to use a gamepad to play Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc because our testers noted that gameplay was substantially more enjoyable with one.

Don’t miss out on this true-school 3D platforming game with a twist. Pick Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc up today for just $5.99 and round off your collection of one of the best PC platforming franchises ever made.

Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc works with the Xbox 360 pad natively.

GOG adds Stranger's Wrath, discounts The Longest Journey

user posted image

QUOTE
GOG is pointing a double-barreled crossbow of delight at us, with a deep discount on The Longest Journey and the addition of Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath. Departing from the regular Oddworld expectations, Stranger's Wrath is a hybrid of third-person action and first-person shooter, seasoned with elements of the Spaghetti Western and Oddworld touches like the "live" critter ammo. The game is available now on GOG for $9.99.

If you'd prefer a sweeping adventure, The Longest Journey is on sale for $3.99. Much like The Neverending Story, we can't vouch for the accuracy of game's title, but it does involve a very long journey, so you'll definitely get your money's worth in this classic point-and-click adventure.

No inventory means no pixel hunting and only the brilliant and outright oldschool logic puzzles are a treat for any fan of the genre. Each one of them has a different “feel” and you must visit them all to fulfill the ancient prophecy before it’s too late!

This game features fully real-time rendered 3D graphics, complete with a physics engine which is creatively used in the puzzles as well. The whole musical side of Uru, and especially the ambient bits that complete the mysterious atmosphere, are a bigger treat than the superb graphics. Summer Hidden Gems: Dark Reign + Expansion

QUOTE
As our catalog gets bigger and better every week, it's easy to lose track of some of the awesome games that we have to offer. We've been running one day "Gaming Gem" promos for a while now to highlight some classic titles that don't get the love of some of our best-known blockbusters like Baldur's Gate or Duke Nukem 3D. To celebrate summer, for the next two weeks until July 25th, we're going to run a Gaming Gem promo every day, so you can rediscover these lesser-known classics! Grab that plastic toy shovel and dig out gem after gem over the next 18 days. We think every game we're going to be offering on our Summer GOG.com Gem Extravaganza will be an excellent title, and we hope you give them all a try.

Today we have uncovered a hardcore RTS hidden gem wink.gif Dark Reign + Expansions is really the true, real RTS you’d want to play. A lot of innovative features were so hardcore that the modern games of today are using the pseudocasual counterparts.

First and foremost the whole setting, the new Hard Sci-Fi world that was created for Dark Reign is unique. You are the lone survivor of the Tograns, a human faction whose homeworld was devoured by a brutal civil war between the Freedom Guard and the Imperium. Now you have to be victorious in battle simulations of some of the famous battles between those two. If you prove yourself, you’ll get a chance to use an advanced probe launcher to go back in time and save the Togran’s leader and scientist Alpheus Togra, thus saving the whole civilization. The expansion pack adds a second campaign involving the Imperium, a rogue AI, and a secret research facility wink.gif

Dark Reign is full of innovations, it’s the one of the first RTS games to use fully 3D models and terrain that impact physics and damage. Fast paced action obliged the design team to drop the Fog of War system and implemented a Line of Sight that changes with the terrain elevation and the landscape. The two sides are totally heterogeneous in terms of design and units, and speaking of the units. To minimise micro-management which can be a chore with this many units and fast paced RTS action a new system was implemented, you can set the general attitude of your individual units. This regulates their rules of engagement and eagerness to fight. Top that with a simple and reliable waypoint system and you get the picture of how deep the gameplay is. All of that is driven by one of the best soundtracks in the history of RTS.

Buy it now only for $3.99 today and check out one of the best RTS games of all time!

New release: Zork: Grand Inquisitor

QUOTE
Today we’re releasing the last installment of the Zork series. As they say, third time’s a charm, The Grand Inquisitor is the third part of the graphical Zork games and surely the best. By far the best one in terms of being accurate to the original Zork adventures with its surreal, silly humor and the pop culture references that leave you smiling when you encounter them wink.gif

Zork: Grand Inquisitor is set in the Great Underground Empire where an ex-student of the Magic University takes over the whole country and implements a totalitarian regime banning magic as a whole. The dictator is the titular Grand Inquisitor who seeks to shun magic, shun the appearance of magic, shun everything, and then shun shunning. The Grand Inquisitor takes a unique view of how to shun someone with the aid of “swift totemization” by courtesy of Frobozz Electric, a process that, trust us, you don't want to go through. The people of Quendor need a hero to relieve them from the dictatorial regime! You are AFGNCAAP. "Ageless, Faceless, Gender-Neutral, Culturally-Ambiguous Adventure Person" which happens to be the hero in most of adventure puzzle games, as well as in Infocoms original Zork games. You meet Dungeon Master Dalboz who gives you the quest to find the three legendary artifacts (one of the Cubes of Foundation, the Coconut of Quendor, and the Skull of Yoruk) required to bring back magic and put an end to the Grand Inquisitor's regime.

The graphic side of Zork aged very well and with the use of real actors for its cut-scenes, Z:GI has nothing to be ashamed of. Superb music and ambient sounds would be enough for many games, but Zork: Grand Inquisitor takes things a step further be being one of the first games to offer full closed captioning so the hearing impaired can enjoy the game to the fullest. Don’t wait and grab the last installment of the Zork series for $5.99 DRM-free only on GOG.com.

New release: Battle Isle: The Andosia War

QUOTE
We are on Chromos - it is the year 345 of the New Age.

The Emperor Wars are now only legends; the catastrophe of Scayra seems forgotten. Under the leadership of an alluringly mysterious figure, the sect of the "Children of Haris" is founded on Merth. Its motto: Peace through War! Its goals: the dissolution of the corrupt system on Chromos and the establishment of the dictatorship by its charismatic high priestess!

This is how the story begins in Battle Isle: Andosia War. It takes place in an archipelago which is divided into two kinds of islands. The titular Battle Isles are the ones which armies fight over and soldiers die over, the economic isles are to provide troops and support for the fighters on other islands. The combat system is the good old turn based combat mechanic, continuing the time-tested system from earlier parts of the series. The game economics have been rebuilt and improved, and are now real-time. There are quite a few resources to enrich the building of your facilities, research new units, and develop your economy even further! Troop training is also done via the economic part of the game and also takes place in real-time. All those preparations are just the appetizer before the armies get on the battle isles and the war starts! The magnificent 3D graphics create rich environments and bring a new tactical element to the Battle Isle series with Line Of Sight and elevation changing the ebb and flow of combat..

Grab the fourth installment (fifth if you count Incubation tongue.gif) of the great Battle Isle series, Battle Isle: Andosia War, DRM-free for only $5.99.

Is EA planning a new Alpha Centauri game?

QUOTE
According to two registered trademarks, EA could be planning a new game for the Alpha Centauri franchise.

The cult turn-based strategy series hasn't seen a new game since Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri was released for the PC in 1999. In 2009 the EA owned trademark expired, but these newly registered trademarks by EA have sparked speculation from fans that a new title is expected to be announced soon.

user posted image
QUOTE
The first trademark is for computer game software, the second is for online computer games. Both of these were registered on 1st August in the US, and then later a trademark was filed for Alpha Centauri in Europe on 2nd August.

Fans are speculating that this could be an iPhone game or a new Facebook version, but there's a chance that EA could be planning something PC or console related. What would you take a guess on?

We'll contact EA to see if we can find out more.
