MDK2 HD arriving 'this September' on Beamdog, former BioWare dev's service
QUOTE
Roughly a year after being announced, and just 4 months after parachuting onto WiiWare, the PC re-release of MDK2, titled appropriately enough MDK2 HD, has a release date of "this September." The port of BioWare's classic sequel is being handled by former BioWare co-founder Trent Oster's Beamdog outfit, under the name Overhaul Games. The release itself will be hosted on the Beamdog digital distribution service, which beams (dog?) games to your computer, with no installation needed.
This HD-ification is being handled by Oster and other "BioWare veterans" like Cameron Tofer, Russ Rice and Sean Smailes, "who were all heavily involved in the development of the original." Oster says, "MDK2 HD really is a labour of love for us. We've spent a lot of time improving the visuals and gameplay, and we can't wait to see what people think!" To that end, the developer is looking for suggestions from fans on what they'd like to see improved.
Don't have any suggestions? Never played the original? That's okay. Tofer, COO at Overhaul Games, says, "We think MDK2 HD has the sort of visuals, humor and great gameplay that can draw in not only existing fans of the game, but a brand new audience that just wasn't able to experience its magic the first time around." You can find out this September, for $14.99.
For the past few years, it has been rumored developer Starbreeze would be working on a remake of the classic Syndicate. The original game was released back in 1993 for the Amiga and MS-DOS, in which players would go on a series of missions for a corrupt corporation.
Starbreeze, who worked recently on the Chronicles of Riddick games, has been reputed to be working on the remake under the codename Project Redlime.
Well, a tweet from a Redbreeze employee declared, “Grand moment approaching. The reveal for Starbreeze and EA’s Project Redlime. Time to meet the press.” The tweet was quickly deleted, but it seems that a Syndicate remake could finally be making its debut at Gamescom.
New release: RollerCoaster Tycoon 2: Triple Thrill Pack
QUOTE
RollerCoaster Tycoon 2: Triple Thrill Pack contains the original game and all of the expansion packs. “An isometric theme-park managerial simulation,” is how an encyclopedia would describe Roller Coaster Tycoon 2, but it is so much more. Improving on the last installment of Roller Coaster Tycoon, the sequel addresses the handful of the quirks and issues one could have playing the predecessor a theme park manager / roller coaster designer, build and manage a huge amusement park and fill it with various rides and attractions. Add rides and amusements of every kind you can imagine like classic go-karts, bumper cars, or ferris wheels, but the emphasis is on the mountainous roller coasters gracefully shadowing the valleys of hot dog stands and restrooms! Both of the expansion packs expand the range of scenarios, continents, rides and landmarks (such as Eiffel Tower, Big Ben or the Great Chinese Wall). On top of that, for all of the theme park regulars Six Flags licensed the game to include scenarios based on their real parks (Magic Mountain, Great Adventure, and Over Texas), and some of its famous rides.
Pick up RollerCoaster Tycoon 2: Triple Thrill Pack DRM-free for only $9.99 and build the ride of your dreams!

SEGA's "reinvention of classic" IP is for "next three-five years"
QUOTE
President Mike Hayes of SEGA West has affirmed they'll keep 'reviewing' what IP there is in their back catalogue to see if it would survive a revival today.
It doesn't always work out, like Golden Axe on Xbox 360 and PS3, he notes. Fans will "continue to see a reinvention" of their classic IP for years.
"We constantly review the IP we’ve got in the locker because that’s one of Sega’s big advantages,” revealed SEGA West boss, Mike Hayes.
“And when we bring it out and do it properly, like re-imagine Sonic or doing Sega Rally Arcade Online and stuff like that, we have success. Some of it when we try and do it, like Golden Axe on PS3 and 360, it didn’t do so well."
"So we carefully look at each IP and every month, we review the locker of IP and think, ‘how could we release those and if so, what are we going to? Will it be a big game, digital, free-to-play?’ We constantly look at it. What I can say is that you will continue to see a reinvention of classic Sega IP coming to various platforms over the next three-five years.”
Hayes calls it a "cornerstone of our strategy," and SEGA has Shinobi coming to Nintendo 3DS. “Shinobi on 3DS is a good example and some of the digital games we’re releasing are good examples, like the Golden Axe redeux and stuff like that. So you’ll see more of it, but we literally look at it all the time," said Hayes. Sorry, "no plans for Shenmue City.”
Have SEGA revived something of their past you couldn't miss out on?

Richard Garriott 'open' to working on Ultima, but EA not interested
QUOTE
Ultima creator Richard Garriott, aka Lord British, is "open" to collaborating with Electronic Arts on a new Ultima game, but EA isn't "particularly interested" in it.
According to Garriott in an interview with Industry Gamers, "I hope that Ultima does survive forever, yet I also, of course, have my own very particular ideas for what Ultima can and should become over time and so we'll see if they do things quite the way I would do them... since I'm not there at the moment."
When asked if he'd spoken to EA about resurrecting the series, he answered that he had tried to convince the publisher, "We would be open to that. In fact, we've had some discussions at what I'll call very high levels, but the individuals who are currently shepherding the property don't seem to be particularly interested in that, so we'll see. Who knows? You never know what's going to happen in the future... the door is always open if they were ever interested."
The only Ultima project currently run by Electronic Arts is the ancient Ultima Online, while EA's last project was the canceled Ultima X: Odyssey MMO.
Today a more modern Electronic Arts release joins the catalogue, and we bet most of you didn't see this one coming. Time to choose your class and fight for the cause of right!
Nox is an isometric action-RPG mix from the masters at the famous Westwood Studios. You are Jack Mower, an ordinary guy living his ordinary life. But one day, due to a cosmic accident and the actions by the evil Queen of Necromancers, you're being sucked out of this universe by your own TV and transferred to a fantasy parallel universe called Nox. We're not sure, but we think the moral of Nox is "Don't watch too much TV." Who says gaming doesn't spread positive messages?
Jack, though, seems in a bit of a spot. It won't be a surprise if we tell you that the world Jack got into is in danger and he's the one that can save it, right?
The beginning seems easy, you need to choose your class and get into action. But the choice isn't as easy as you think it is as every class has its own starting point, story, ending, and gameplay mechanics, so choose your path wisely or just prepare to beat the game 3 times. As a warrior you'll be slashing and crushing your enemies with the huge arsenal of melee weapons available in the game, but you won't be able to use magic. The wizard is a mighty magician with a spellbook full of magic tricks you can use to attack enemies, make yourself invisible, teleport, and more. Wizards can't use weapons, though, so there's no backup if the spells run out. The last path you can choose is to play as the conjurer who can summon monsters and wild animals living in the world of Nox and use them to do all his dirty work, while also healing himself and his allies and, last but not least, using bows to help your critters out.
If you finish the game with all 3 classes and want more there are fun multiplayer modes that are inspired by the FPS genre like deathmatch, capture the flag, "King of the Realm" (aka king of the hill), and even a co-op mode! That's a hella lot of fun gameplay for only $5.99, so go get it now!
Mooooreee! That was your reaction when we released Ultima Underworld 1+2, it was the same when we gave you Ultima 1+2+3 and Ultima 4: Quest of the Avatar (for free!). And you guys especially know that all we ever want to do is keep you guys happy, so without further ado, we bring you the Age of Enlightenment games of the fantastic Ultima series!
Ultima 4: Quest of the Avatar is already released and available for free on GOG.com. You can read the description of the game in the previous news post. Why is it included in this game pack? Well, the Ultima series breaks down into three trilogies, and it seemed a shame to break up the lovely symmetry.
Ultima 5: Warriors of Destiny picks up on the story of the Avatar, the hero of Britannia. The country’s benevolent monarch is nowhere to be found, and an usurper named Lord Blackthorn has claimed the throne! It’s your duty as the embodiment of the Eight Virtues to make all wrongs right and recover the world of Britannia from the paws of Blackthorn and his three evil Shadowlords! This installation of the Ultima series expands on the world of Ultima 4 in a number of ways: towns are larger, have more unique buildings, and NPC interaction has evolved. With enhanced dialogues, diverse conversation topics, and a diverse array of characters, Ultima V shows that Lord British kept raising the bar for games looking to call themselves an “RPG.” The day and night cycle affects the gameplay. For example you can’t shop at night because the NPC shopkeepers are asleep! Delve into the world of Britannia and save its inhabitants & moral codex!
Ultima 6: The False Prophet starts out with a bang! You, the Avatar, are captured by demons, imprisoned, and ready to be sacrificed on an altar. Like in all those Hollywood movies, in the nick of time your friends from earlier adventures come in guns a-blazing to save you! You learn that those demon-like creatures are gargoyles, a new race that invaded Britannia and have seized the shrines of Virtue. As you venture forth on your next adventure as the Avarat, you try to understand the true motivations of gargoyles. As the embodiment of the Eight Virtues, the Avatar will understand that his mission is to establish peace and make the two races coexist in Britannia peacefully. Ultima 6 is a one of a kind game which, without over imposing it on the player, tells a story of the evil of human prejudice and ignorance. This is where the motto of Origin Systems, “We create worlds”, is best visible and it really steps up to its name!
Play the full “second” trilogy of Ultima 4+5+6! Now available DRM-free on GOG.com for $5.99.
Note: The character import function does not work yet, but we are doing everything we can to find a solution to this problem and we will update the game as soon as we can get it worked out.
Back in April of last year, a copyright document ferreted out by Superannuation revealed that Starbreeze, the developer of Escape From Butcher Bay and The Darkness, was hard at work on a revival of the Syndicate series for EA. Now it appears that we're all about to get our first look at the fruits of Starbreeze's labor, judging by an early posting to EA's Origin store, caught by the all-seeing eye of Mordo – we mean, gaming forum NeoGAF.
There's plenty of info over at GAF, but the particularly interesting bits include Chips, which add new abilities and skills, four-player cooperative play, and a story penned by Crysis 2 scripter (and author of Altered_Carbon, Black Man/Thirteen and more) Richard K. Morgan. The scuttlebutt indicates that Syndicate will debut in next week's Gamesreactor magazine (a Swedish publication), and really, EA couldn't have picked a better time to reveal a Sci-Fi Noir action-adventure title, could it?
We continue the space and sci-fi theme of this week's releases with today's new game in the catalogue. Get ready to travel the universe and engage into close encounters with alien species.
With the release of Star Control 3 for just $5.99 we're completing the trilogy of this one of a kind mix of action, adventure and strategy game genres. Once again you're off to a great journey through the Kessari Quadrant to unravel a deadly secret, stop the mysterious Eternal Ones, and save the whole universe from extermination. Commanding your fleet of space battleships you're going to explore the enormous universe and build colonies on newly discovered planets, use your diplomacy skills to negotiate alliances with more than 20 alien races, and (if that fails) you're going to enter the Hyper Melee Combat with a whole new "almost-3D" view.
The third part of the series was developed by a different studio than the originals, and brought many innovations, which unfortunately some of the hardcore fans of the saga weren't thrilled about. That's of course a matter of taste, but putting individual preferences aside, the game features a superior game engine, an expanded strategy-based colony management, and a new and improved Melee Combat mode among other updates. The game's epic story, refined gameplay, and plenitude of possibilities will keep the fans of the series, as well as newcomers, enraptured in front of their monitors for hours.
But we don't need to tell you that, just check it out for yourself! For just $5.99, it's an incredible bargain of gameplay and storytelling excellence!
