The latest PS3 console, the PS3 slim can now Bitstream to your AVR. Priced at 299USD i think its the best option for BD player. Its slammer and fit easily into your HT system. I am thinking if i should buy a unit and make it my Dedicated BD player. Previously there were alot of grumble because the PS3 cant bit stream. Now i see the ps3 as the best option as a BD player

Wha bro Mpyw ... u really hard to please leh... hahahhaah... But the PS3 slim has a new BD reader/lens.... It is said to boot up faster that the original PS3 Phat. So maybe the picture quality could have improve.. No one know for certain at this point. But i really dont see much a difference on a Ps3 and BD player. Maybe cause i am a noob tongue.gif

Wow, Sony didn't even mention this in the official announcement. What is their strategy here? hmm.gif

PS3 has been long held as the best BD player (at it's price point of course, complete with the obvious extra feature: a game console), now they upping the ante. Fastest loading, and now can bitstream lossless audio codecs.

But because I have both standalone BD player and the SACD-capable PS3, I won't be considering this new PS3.

However, for those who has neither a BD player or a PS3, this new slim PS3 can be your ultimate solution.

Coz he wanna play ahem ahem games on it..... doubt the ahem ahems can do much to the games, moreover with a newer PS3 (and the new chips, new lens speed, etc), it will take them more time..... or else they would have them out by now.

Or.... mayb he wanna play the ahem ahem BD25 discs out there?? Wonders if those PQ and AQ are as good, nvr dared to buy them tho they are much cheaper???

Not to forget PS3 can be a very good media player as well.
Can stream mkv files by using PS3 Media Server on PC.

To add more, gaming site Destructoid has confirmed that the new PS3 is much quieter. In fact, that was the thing about the new PS3 that impressed their reviewers the most:

"This thing is quiet. Scary quiet. 'WTF, is it even on?' quiet. Nick thinks the optical drive makes just a bit more noise than the original when inserting or ejecting a disc, but it didn't seem any louder to me. Either way, once your game or movie is in there, the thing is virtually silent."

it depends, really depends, like i always say technology, ( a board can just house a piece of IC ), but when blind fold test, it might win straight showdown on bigger boards ) biggrin.gif

must not be prejudice "don't judge a book by its cover"

It still worth the consideration, even i'm not a game addict, but given the features, wifi, streaming, mkv.... who knows whats written in the next chapter of our lifes. we are in a dream world...a non believer can always be a believer.... its reality... my fren smile.gif

Finally, they fixed the noisy fan problem and with bitstream capability I guess its a pretty good BD player. Honestly, PQ was not much different compared to standalone BD player for HD content. Standalone BD players have more tweaking ability for PQ (some not all). DVD upconversion is not important at all if u do not need it. One of the problems is the inability to deinterlace 1080i content and that only covers a small number of titles.

This gives less reason for people not to jump onto the HD bandwagon in the West. Of course, for HD to be mainstream in Asia, you all know what needs to happen.

Do you all realize that PS3 slim will be coming out in firmware 3.0. That meant, possibly the conventional PS3 can bitstream these HD audio codec after upgrade the firmware to 3.0, will it??
If I'm not wrong, last time the firmware earlier of PS3 cant decode the DTS HD MA & DOLBY TRUEHD.
Just wait & see la............

I see... Most PS3 users even I also glad to see the "DTS HD MA" or "DOLBY TRUEHD" light up on the AVR...
To me, as for the sound quality, it shouldn't have too much different between LPCM and Bitstream .........

IIRC, the current PS3 can't bitstream (can only decode internally) cos of the limitation of the HDMI controller chip..

so even with 3.0 firmware (which is software enhancement) .. still can't bitstream DTS-MA due to hardware limitation..

but I dun mind hoping it can.. smile.gif

Then I wont need a BDP and a Media player. This would be one for all.

hahah..ok another good new to those who have a sony bravia tv. YOu cna use the Tv remote to control your ps3. So you dont have to buy a bluetooth remote. Also when you switch off ur bravia tv it will automatically switch off ur ps3 also... Cool eh..In the future it will be compatible with all Sony device... all the devices will be able to snyc with each other. Thats the vision. and we are seeing the integration happening bit by bit.

Good news for Sony owners. Again this was the problem with the HDMI chip they used in the fat PS3. This technology, HDMI-CEC is not new. Many manufacturers been using this for at least a couple of years already. It takes advantage of the digital connectivity to sends signal via HDMI in between the different HDMI-connected components. But the problem is, it's restricted to one single brands only as each has it's own codes. Sony calls it Bravia Sync, Panasonic Viera Link, Samsung Anynet+, etc.

For me it's better just using a third-party universal remote as it can control each of your components simultaneously , any brands or model. But of course, for PS3 it will need the BT adapter, that's ok with me though.

Well, Panasonic BD60 also has US, HK & Malaysia version. They're all the same model, even the BD region is the same. The difference is just the warranty coverage (and/or the PSU).

All 3 are from the same region A, only diff is the warranty coverage from different country, and where they are shipped from.

So HK and US sets' warranty is covered in those country only. The selling shops will usually tell u they cover the local warranty, but be very sure of what they cover in the warranty as usually they FOC the workmanship but charges for the parts changed.

To be safer (esp since the unit is new and unproven in the long run), wait for the MY version as the warranty is covered by Sony MY. I hear that the unit gets hot very fast (due to the more compact casing) and the fan turns on more frequently (as its smaller and slower to reduce the noise levels).

Ps. SCE(HK) covers HK, Taiwan, SG and MY, some shops may say HK set instead of SG.

Considering the orginal PS3 is already in the market, it shouldn't take too long.

It took years before because it was just something new and different from PS2.

The new slim is not a next-generation console, still a PS3, not PS4 yet. laugh.gif

I mean compare the new slim PS3 with some branded BDP in terms of PQ & SQ, can PS3 compete with or even beat these BDP?

Not a long time ago PS3 was the best BD player. Even now, PQ-wise it's still one of the best. AQ, when you bitstream there's nothing to compare, it's now to be done by the receiver. This new Slim PS3 has all the capabilities of any standard BD player.

However, standalone players are more popular among HT enthusiasts. Like all audiophiles, they (including myself) prefers separate equipment for different purposes.

Better wait for the official malaysia version. Rumored around end of Sept or in October. We don't know how is this PS3 slim durability, so better safe than sorry by buying the official Malaysia version. Just my 2 cents.

I think many dissatisfied customers are more likely to voice out their displeasure as compared to happy and contented customers to voice happiness, as that could be construed as gloating and boasting fanboy.

I have been using my Phat PS3 since SG launched it way back then (i paid a damn premium for it, can almost buy 2 slim PS3 now) and mostly been using it for games.

Slowly have been racun-ed to play BD, but i am happy with the LPCM output as you can hear the diff as compared to regular DD or DTS.

Not only the logo, but the font is different as well. No more that Spide-Man font. And the new firmware uses the new logo and font at the introduction. It celebrates the arrival of this new Slim PS3, so our old fat PS3 will just have to follow. laugh.gif

Added on September 4, 2009, 9:51 amFinally just registered the MY PSN account. Didn't know now we can already buy stuffs in Ringgit Malaysia, just bought WipeOut HD and the new dynamic LittleBigPlanet dynamic theme.

We can also test download/upload speed now with the new firmware:

From Joystiq :

"The system wasn't the only thing that got smaller when Sony officially unveiled the slimmer PS3. The entire PlayStation branding has been reworked: the system is no longer PLAYSTATION 3 (all caps), it's PlayStation 3. The logo no longer uses the Spider-Man font to spell out the entire system name. Instead, marketing materials now feature three simple characters: "PS3."

Kaz Hirai explained the meaning behind the change to Times Online. The new logo represents a "reset" of sorts. Hirai explains that he wanted it to represent "going back to our roots."

There are practical applications to a revised logo, as well. "When you have PlayStation 3 spelt out, the aspect ratio was such that if you wanted it on a billboard it became tiny. It didn't work in terms of visibility," he admitted. We took a look back to this Call of Duty 4 TV ad to emphasize the difference: the Xbox 360 logo is more than twice as large as the now-outdated PLAYSTATION 3 logo. If you watched this ad on a SDTV, you probably wouldn't even notice the PS3 logo at all! While we're not entirely sure the new logo will have an effect on sales, we (and other games bloggers) are glad to finally give our CAPS LOCK keys a break. Thanks, Sony."

You can use media server, or copy directly to the PS3's harddisk via network. I've copied a few 8GB files via network.

The only reason you can't have have files bigger than 4GB is the USB external drive format. PS3 can only read USB external drive that is formatted with FAT32, which limits file size to 4GB maximum.

If yr PS3 is attached to yr network, it can stream from PC directly. Use TVersity, PS3 Media Stream and even Vuze. There are many guides online.

The PS3 cant read external HDD if connected to the USB. Tried.

It reads other files from thumbdrives easily (MP3, MP4, .jpeg, .png, Avi, m2ts... but not flv or mkv), u need to find them under their respective folder (ie Music, Video, Photos) under "USB Device".

The PS3 is really worth it, 1080p BD player, HD audio out, streams files from PC, and it plays games. All for less than 1300. After all, "It only does everything".... laugh.gif laugh.gif

Heard about that, luckily I don't have that game. smile.gif

Anyway, the PS3 can read external HDD via USB, just make sure it's FAT32 formatted, not NTFS. And those folder structure not really a must, just use triangle to display all then you should be able to browse. And MKV files can easily remuxed to MP4 container in 10 minutes.

yea... you need to click Triangle and select "display all" to view the contents of your external HDD (FAT32 format).. too bad cant read NTFS if not loads of stuff I can use my PS3 to watch.

So even if PC HDD is NTFS, PS3 can read it if they are all connected via a network?

You can also stream media to the PS3 from any DLNA-compliant NAS that's connected to your home network WITHOUT the need to transcode from a pc/notebook. That means u don't need a pc/notebook to stream to the PS3. Examples of such NAS include Synology, QNAP, etc.

bzcos my AV receiver is not networkable and can't stream music fr network attach storage NAS.
since PS3 slim can stream music fr NAS without the PC.

i thinks PS3 slim is really value for money rclxms.gif BD player, play games, network streaming for playing music, movie and photo viewing..
(except network radio)
save money for digital media like WDTV, BD player, digital photo frame and you can play games too.

my next project will be ....

center location to store all my songs, photo and favorite movies into NAS with mirroring protection.
(exisiting all my files are resides at thumb drive, PC hard disk, notebook hard disk and some are duplication, hard to organize and don't know which can delete)

whenever need to play songs, view photo or watch movie. Switch on the PS3, TV, AV and the NAS will do.
switch on the notebook only if need to manage the folders and etc..

isn't tat most of the ppl wanted?

thks

my AV also very hot but i believe some gamers play games all day long, hopefully streaming the music wouldn't be tat hot as no moving parts at disk player. perhaps add some fan.

my objective is to have center location to store my digital files and mirror protection. Able to retrive those digital files without switch on the PC or notebook, especially when visitor around, able to display the photo to the tv and etc.

thks

bro...... but does ps3 slim play mkv & flac format? if u're into music, then u shldn't be listening to mp3.... that's lossy compression. go for flac format. it's at source quality. wdtv does both mkv & flac but ps3 interface beats wdtv. also, ps3 outputs better color imo

Yes, PS3 Slim can decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA internally, even the old PS3 can. But this new PS3 Slim can bitstream those audio codecs, something the old one can't.

You'll need an AVR that at least can accept multi-channel PCM, which is the decoded HD signal from the PS3. If you can get an AVR that can decode these HD codecs then you can bitstream for the AVR to decode.

You'll need an AVR that at least can accept multi-channel PCM, which is the decoded HD signal from the PS3. If you can get an AVR that can decode these HD codecs then you can bitstream for the AVR to decode.

can i know bitstream audio codecs means?
is the HDMI to the AV is kind of bitstream?
or those kind of 7 output port to 7 speaker and subwoofer?

bitstream means sending the data to the receiver to decode..

if decode by the player, the result will be PCM at the player side and then send to receiver via analog or Digital.

Last night when i play Transformers BD on my PS3 Slim, My Onkyo 606 show that the audio is PCM multichannel. How can i bitstream from my PS3 slim to AVR and let my AVR do the TrueHD audio codec job?

You sure it's set to bitstream? Connected using HDMI? There are 2 audio options in the video section of the PS3 settings, one HDMI and the other optical. Just set both to bitstream to make sure.

Or, one silly question, you sure your PS3 is the new Slim version?

Ron, Transformers doesn't have PCM track to begin with, and it always default to Dolby TrueHD.

Glad it finally works. Strange though, if the cable can send the even higher bandwidth uncompressed multi-channel PCM, I don't see why it can't send the compressed codecs. hmm.gif

Yes, but first you must set the PS3 to send PCM. And must use HDMI for all lossless codecs.

Optical you'll also see PCM if you set so, but it's the lossy core track. Not lossless.

EDIT: Let me find the audio flow chart I posted before.

Yes, you'll get lossless, and all the channels available from the BD. If the movie is 7.1 while your setup is 5.1, the AVR will downmix the 2 surround-back channel to the surround-rears.

PCM: The player does the decoding.
Bitstream: The player sends the audio as is, and let the AVR do the decoding.

Keep in mind lossless only via HDMI. Unless the player has multi-channel outs.

Well, for analogue connection good quality cables are essentials. They can be costly, especially when you need 6 to 8 cables! sweat.gif

Since your AVR can't decode the HD codecs, when you bitstream them the AVR will only decode the embedded core tracks inside the main HD track.

Let's say you're playing a Dolby TrueHD movie, if you bitstream the AVR will show "Dolby Digital". If it's DTS-HD Master Audio, it will show "DTS". These are lossy tracks because your AVR can't decode the main lossless track.

If the player does the decoding, the AVR will convert the PCM to analogue using the DAC and then amplify it to power your speakers. Can refer to the flow chart above about where each process is done.

Yes, Dolby also has it. But unlike DTS, it is not compulsory. Some titles (probably newer ones) might not have it.

Tested this myself when I was using still the PS3 as a BD player. Can't remember which titles, but until now I never found any that didn't have it. Maybe because I never bothered to check anymore especially since I have a standalone BDP.

However, the Dolby Digital in the Dolby TrueHD track is called "substream", not "core" like DTS. It's a whole different track attached to the main lossless track. While the DTS core is part of the DTS-HD MA, reconstructed from the main lossless track.

I guess the discs that has a separate Dolby Digital track won't have it attached to Dolby TrueHD. In this case, if van_dyke tries to bitstream it, the AVR will show "no signal" and there should be no sound.

Notice the Dolby TrueHD track. He used the term "core", but doesn't matter, it proves that the core/substream track of Dolby Digital (AC3) is available with the Dolby TrueHD.

Anyway, Contact is one of my favorite sci-fi drama. Even though a drama, the DVD is recommended by SVS to show off your subwoofer. Those who've seen this movie knows what I mean. Imagine that with lossless audio! drool.gif

bitstream = ur PS3 send the original RAW signal to decoder.
PCM = PS3 read and decode then translate the signal before send to amp/speakers.

Bitstream has the advantage of single cable, less chances of signal lost due to multiple cables and etc. The downside is, not all AVR currently on market decodes the full potential of the signal yet.

layman terms MP3@320kps AQ will lose to FLAC right

MP3 is just compress music but FLAC is very close to original w/o loosing AQ right

Yes.... that sounds right (pun intended)... tongue.gif

DTS (lossy) outputs at 1500kbps ++, DTS-MA outputs at 5000kbps (can remember exactly how much, will check tonite, sifus can verify here??), go figure which has more sound detail, positioning and resolution....

the prob is, not everyone can notice the differ between an MP3 & a FLAC.
Best is go to your friendly shop, and test it there.

Actually, the correct sentence should be like this:

MP3 is just compressed music but FLAC is very close to original w/o losing AQ right?

And the answer is, FLAC is like zipped wav. No difference, hence lossless.

Can qualify to teach English or not?

Don't like that lah. I'm just another bro. blush.gif

Which does better decoding? Depends. You have to decide yourself, try both and see which is better. In my opinion, in the PS3 Fat case my AVR does it better. Maybe because it uses dedicated decoding chip, instead of the software decoding by the PS3. But still, your own ears should decide.

What do you mean by highest track? Sorry, I don't understand. There are DTS-CD, DVD-A and SACD. However, Dolby Digital can be 5.1 or stereo.

Most AVR can matrix stereo sources to all speakers, using Dolby PLIIx, DTS:Neo, THX, etc. This way the AVR will use certain algorithms to put certain instruments to the surrounds, vocals to the center, and so on. This means you should hear something different from each speakers. All stereo is different, there's still 2 discrete channel, just distributed to all speakers.

so, DTS-CD, SACD will have 5.1 or 7.1 sound?
if the DVD player audio output set to bitstream and the AV detected as PCM output. Means the HDMI cable need to be change to new?
what if it's PCM output and the DVD decoder doesn't decode DTS-CD, means it's still stereo only?

hehee.. any recommend DTS-CD? by the way, DTS-CD means at least it's 5.1 sound track?
sound like stupid question.

DTS (lossy) outputs at 1500kbps ++, DTS-MA outputs at 5000kbps (can remember exactly how much, will check tonite, sifus can verify here??), go figure which has more sound detail, positioning and resolution....
Correction due!!

DTS outputs at 640kbps, while DTS-MA outputs at 1500+kbps.... so thats double the data in the sound files...

However, not all can distinguish more audio details versus simply being loud.... cool.gif cool.gif cool.gif

Make a date with new PS3, PSP Go

KUALA LUMPUR: SONY announced that it will officially launch the new slimline PlayStation3 with a 120GB hard disk, and the PSP Go locally on Oct 31.

The new PS3 and PSP Go will be available at suggested retail prices of RM1,299 and RM1,099 respectively.

Compared to the first PS3 model with 60GB hard disk, the internal volume as well as the thickness and weight of the new PS3 are trimmed down to approximately two-thirds, Sony said.

Furthermore, power consumption is also cut to two-thirds, helping to reduce fan noise.

Customers can also choose to get the optional Vertical Stand for the new PS3 to set the console in a vertical position. The stand will be available for RM82.

Meanwhile the PSP Go replaces the UMD drive of the original with 16GB of Flash memory to store a variety of digital entertainment content. It will be available in black and white.

In addition to accessing the PlayStation Store directly from the PSP using the built-in WiFi or through the PS3, Sony said users will be able to download a variety of entertainment content via their PCs using Media Go, a new software application.

The application will be available on a CD bundled with the PSP Go. There will also be a new music application specific to the PSP that uses the SensMe channels music recommendation feature available for download.

In conjunction with the launch, Sony will be having an event on Oct 31, 11am at the 1 Utama shopping complex in Petaling Jaya where customers will have the chance to grab special premiums for the new PS3 and PSP Go.

++++

Now that I looked at the fine print the * stands for "Promotion Limited to one unit per customer only"

This is the promo advert:-

Looking at the promo again, I wonder if the free controller is acutally an extra controller or just the single original controller.

the current SG or HK warranty units are going for 1180 (console+1controler).
for 1399 get a game and 2 controlers is really a good grab, just afraid that it might be too good to be true.

They're start selling at 11 am 31st October. But you can start queuing starting from 30th October in the morning.

For me it's not worth the wait.

Awww..... maybe Sony is trying to pull something? Just like last year before the launch, Sony also said limited unit while stock lasts, in the end those losers went there and queue early in the morning. LOL.

Those who walk in later, still can buy, but without queuing for a few hours. doh.gif

I think after the first 150 customers, price will revert to RM1,299/- without the Promo extras. Just a Hunch.

Haha Pity those kena this trap and queue for 1 day and then find out he is the 151th customer, and no more Promo deal doh.gif

How would you know your position anyway?
Send one guy to count heads for you?

Yea I heard about the 150units up for promo only.
Sad eh. I guess you can still get a game+DS3 for 1399+/- if you'd go for those HK/SG set eh.

You won't know your position. That's why I said pity the 151st guy because when it reaches the last set available (150) then only he will find out no more offer for him after all the queuing.

I think those people who works in Sony for this events might just be some tea lady qualification.

Just have no idea what they're up to. so all 150th customers will get cash vouchers + promo prices.
In short, 151st beyond can just go home and eat sh*t.

That one just typo error. Someone called Sony up and they confirmed the 151st person onwards can still buy at RM1,299/- without the freebies of course.

Guys, don't expect there is a seat for those who wait for the launch...you are allowed to sit on the floor and wait till 11am.
Last year, the first one who bought PS3 was a girl and she camped there for 2 nights.
You are not allow to walk away after putting your name...unless you have someone standby for you.
Then they will give you a ticket number to you around 8-9am. Then wait till it launch.
For those who got ticket #100-150, i guess you have to wait till 1-2pm cause cashier is very slow.
Hopefully they have better arrangement this year in order to make the purchasing faster and more efficient.

Because they can get special promo price with freebies (extra controller/Free Game/T-Shirt) and a chance for cash vouchers up to RM1,000/- . Applicable only on launch day.

You only read the last few posts and don't know much about the promotion, that's why you don't understand.

I am gonna wait a few days after the launch before scouring the Garage sales forum for a second hand unit. Alot of people will be caught up with the hype and glamour without realizing that they do not have enough money to pay their car installment. smile.gif

I don't think so dude... the PS3 is just a mere RM1.3k ish, not RM13k. 1.3k is not a lot of money and isn't that significant in one's life. I don't think there will be anyone that pathetic to buy and then realise they can't afford it.

Think this time won't be as hot as previous ps3 fat launch. Cos I'm sure many already has ps3 fat since then and too soon to upgrade unles got $$$.

Queues are only for the freebies/vouchers.

Maybe will go there to check out games / BD movies ... wonder got cheap ones.

Yo anyone facing problems with mkv with DTS audio codec?
I tried converting the file to .ts and m2ts(AVCHD). Audio's not coming up.
Using tsMuxer. TVersity (wireless)> PS3 (HDMI)> AMP (HDMI)> LCD.
What could be wrong eh?

can try read through this thread

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/754023

ps3 media server is better that Tversity in transcoding stuff on the fly for PS3. i use it together with wired connection with not problem to play any video and audio format. for wireless will need to do fine tuning depending on you connection quality.

not all avi is playable... i have some anime that doesn't played in ps3.. got sound but no picture... doh.gif since ps3 dun support NTFS... u stuck with 4 GB per file limit... need to split >4GB files whenever u remux mkv to ts format.. other format i'm not sure... mp4 is playable... u can check the FAQ in console couch section.. biggrin.gif

n WDTV can play mkv summore... no need to waste time converting...
