Go Knoppix, you have 2GB of s/w compress into a 700MB CDR that mean lots of Open Source software for you to try out and less of all no need to format your PC HDD. If you like it, install Knoppix into your HDD, and run fro m HDD it make loading quicker than CDROM.

I'm suggesting for Linux beginner's who has a need for networking work can try Suse 9.x. Its really helpful as it comes with YaST - kindda like Control Panel in Windows. It DOES help me alot in configuring this and that. Furthermore, if you want to install anything(application), YaST will acknowledge what other package(s) you need in order to install the programme. Good Luck.

(the one that have .tar) i'm succesfully install a lot of application using tarbal such as tvtime, xine and etc. but how to unintall it? using the commad "make uninstall" ? in what directory? am i right? sweat.gif

yeah... I agree.... just pick one of the most used distros and try it out..... after all, you just want to play around with it right? you're not deploying a mission-critical server right? wink.gif

I'm sure as time goes by, you will have tried out a few of them anyway..... tongue.gif

Does that mean Fedora Core is actually Red Hat?
So now no more red hat?
Why they replace red hat with fedora core?

in the extracted directory. eg. find xine folder and then type make uninstall. however not all the tarball files included the uninstall command.

anyway, I'm also a so-called newbie in this linux thingie, and as far as I concerned, Suse 9.1 pro is fine running on my box. Agreed with the YaST feature, help you a lot when installing rpm packages. especially, the dependency check stuff.

If I'm not mistaken, all rpms are compatible with suse, although they are made specially for red hat. wink.gif
