Manchester United star Wayne Rooney is aware the club have a point to prove this season following the departures of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez.

The Red Devils have sold Ronaldo to Real Madrid in a world-record deal, while Tevez's loan stay ended and the Argentine joined rivals Manchester City.

Critics have suggested that United are now fighting an uphill battle to record a fourth Premier League title in a row in the wake of the summer exits.

Rooney knows the doubters will be ready to pounce if success is not achieved this season and the striker is determined to ensure that does not happen.

He said in The Sun after scoring in United's 1-0 win over Birmingham on Sunday: "We have to prove to everyone we can win this league again.

"We played well in parts against Birmingham, but there is more to come from us.

"It was the first game of the season and it's always very difficult after playing a lot of games pre-season.

"When it comes to the atmosphere and intensity of the game, it's a lot quicker than pre-season games."

Rooney's winner at the weekend came on the back of a strike against Chelsea in the Community Shield to take the England ace to 99 goals for his club.

As the 23-year-old closes on a century of United goals, he is revelling in a central role after being played on the flanks during Ronaldo and Tevez's time at Old Trafford.

"I'm pleased with two in two," he added. "I'm enjoying my football and the manager has said he's going to play me down the middle, so I'm looking forward to that."

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Ben Foster hopes he can keep Edwin van der Sar out of the United side when the Dutchman returns from injury.

Foster said: "I was happy with my contribution on Sunday. This is my big chance while Edwin is out.

"I just have to do what I can and hopefully when he comes back I'll have done enough to stay where I am."

Watford have bolstered their squad with the signing of Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley on loan until January.

Cleverley spent the second half of last season on loan at Leicester City and has now been allowed out again by United boss Sir Alex Ferguson to gain further first-team experience.

Ferguson admitted earlier this month that he faced a dilemma regarding Cleverley's future after the 20-year-old scored in the friendly win over Valencia.

The United chief was debating whether to send the England Under 20 international out on loan after revealing Premier League clubs had shown an interest.

He has now decided to let Cleverley play Championship football for the next few months after agreeing a deal with Malky Mackay's Watford.

Cleverley could make his debut for the Hornets on Tuesday night when Mackay takes his squad to Nottingham Forest.

Nemanja Vidic's agent Silvano Martina has quashed speculation the Manchester United defender will leave Old Trafford this summer.

The Serbia international has been linked Barcelona, AC Milan and Inter Milan amid reports his family are unsettled in Manchester.

However, the player is under contract at Old Trafford until 2012 and Martina believes he will stay put.

"Even though Vidic has not spoken for the last three months, there have been false interviews published in the press," Martina told Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I read that he wants to leave, that his wife is not happy at Manchester but all of these stories are false.

"He is very annoyed and saddened by these stories that give the wrong impression.

"In football you never know what can happen, but I believe he will remain at Manchester United, one of the strongest clubs in the world.

"If Vidic or I should have problems with the club (United), we will talk directly to Alex Ferguson and not to the newspapers."

Vidic joined United in January 2006 after two years at Spartak Moscow.

The Serbian has been one of the star performers in the Premier League and is one of the first names on the teamsheet for United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The 27-year-old defender, who joined the Red Devils from Spartak Moscow in January 2006, has been linked with a transfer to Europe this summer and, although the Old Trafford outfit are reluctant to let him leave, the defender's agent has hinted he could be keen on a move.

"Vidic would be delighted to play at Barca as his dream is to go to the Spanish league," [B]Paolo Fabbri[/B] told Catalan radio station RAC1.

"We have to analyse the situation but, being realistic, things are complicated at the moment.

"The team just lost Cristiano Ronaldo and [Carlos] Tevez and they do not want to lose another important piece of their starting XI once again."
