I need some honest opinion . I think that samsung 50" plasma B650 has better black level than panasonic 50" s10K. although i would say the difference not really big, but samsung is 400-500 more expensive than panny. does it justify the few hundred extra?

if you ask me then I would say definitely worth it.
apart from dark level, it comes with better features such as player that can play any types of movie files except rmvb and the wireless thingy.
and of course I feel B650 has a better looks than S10.

Correction, almost any type of movie files except RMVB and DTS not supported. Can play a 8GB++ 1080p Bluray file effortlessly without any shutter or pixilation BUT too bad no audio sweat.gif

RM400-500 more? Consider it as having a built-in media player and wireless streaming capability.

My hope is Panasonic will take this feature and improve it one level up!
It is lot cheaper than buying ori bluray disk. laugh.gif

Who cares if it can even decode and downmix lossless audio to play on the tv speakers? In the first place U play the movie using the TV can bitstream out to AVR or not? If not it's just a white elephant feature. doh.gif

Just came back from QBM. The plasmas are already on display. They setup a mini Sammy roadshow outside Guess. Here's my super short FR based on my 30 minute viewing for both PS50B550 and PS50B650

- 650 has a little better AR coating. However, the difference is very very minute and virtually indistinguishable when watching movies (same source). When fully off, the 650 has a purple tint on the glass. The 550 also has this purple tint, but it is less. I don't have a side by side comparison, but I think the reflection on the 550 is similar to Panny S10.

- 650 has these which are not available for 550: Ultra FilterBright (vs FilterBright), 100Hz Motion Plus (vs 100Hz) and WCE3 (vs WCE2). HOWEVER, those make no difference to me at all when watching movie. I have to admit though skin tones on the 650 is slightly more natural, but I am confident that can be achieved as well on the 550.

- Didn't test the media capabilities on the 650 as I was not interested in it. Alan demoed it for 5 mins, until got error message on one of those MKV unsupported file. I told him to switch back to the Sammy demo BD so I could do side by side comparion. laugh.gif

- I put my ear next to both the plasmas and cannot hear any buzzing sound. Granted, it was quite noisy over there, so I could be wrong. I forgot to test for the buzz during power on for the plasmas though. Can anyone test those and get back on this? Thanks.

- Price wise, RM6299 for 650 and RM5499 for 550. Free HDMI cable only with 2 year warranty.

The roadshow will be there until Monday. Alan said they will move it up once the roadshow is over, but not sure if the 650 and 550 will be placed side by side for comparison. They could also box it up if no space available. sweat.gif

END OF FR.

chewkl,

Does the 550 have the full CMS and the white balance/greyscale adjustments in the user menu, if it does, then u can calibrate out the skin tone differences. However, the fact that they use 2 different filters tell me that post calibration the 650 will probably have slightly better black levels compared to the 550. This is the "premium" the insert on the higher end models.

Bro Anfieldude, I didn't mess with the menu, but I know for a fact both use different menu. The 650 has this animation going on in the menu but the 550 was plain Jane. I did remember Alan was adjusting it and saw the "tint" setting. Didn't check anything else. Let me see if I can get the user manual. biggrin.gif

RM800 difference and to my peasant eyes I see very very little difference, better save the $$$. sweat.gif

Maybe U can pay a visit to QBM and go play with both plasmas and give us your "qualified review" here? thumbup.gif

***EDIT***

From the manual:

Changing the Picture Settings
Mode
You can select the type of picture which best corresponds to your viewing requirements.
Dynamic: Selects the picture for high-definition in a bright room.
Standard: Selects the picture for the optimum display in a normal environment.
Movie: Selects the picture for viewing movies in a dark room.
Press the TOOLS button to display TOOLS menu.
You can also set the picture mode by selecting TOOLS → Picture Mode.

Cell Light / Contrast / Brightness / Sharpness / Colour / Tint (G/R)

Your television has several setting options that allow you to control the picture quality.
Cell Light: Adjusts the pixel brightness.
Contrast: Adjusts the contrast level of the picture.
Brightness: Adjusts the brightness level of the picture.
Sharpness: Adjusts the edge definition of the picture.
Colour: Adjusts Colour saturation of the picture.
Tint (G/R): Adjusts the Colour tint of the picture.

Select a picture mode to be adjusted first. The adjusted values are saved for each picture mode.
When you make changes to Cell Light, Contrast, Brightness, Sharpness, Colour or Tint (G/R), the OSD will be adjusted accordingly.
In TV, AV modes of the PAL system, you cannot use the Tint Function.
In PC mode, you can only make changes to Cell Light, Contrast and Brightness.
Settings can be adjusted and stored for each external device you have connected to an input of the TV.
The energy consumed during use can be significantly reduced if the level of brightness of the picture is reduced, and then this will reduce the overall running cost.

Colour Space
Colour Space is a colour matrix composed of red, green and blue colours. Select your favourite colour space to experience the most natural colour.
Auto: Automatically sets the color range depending on the input video source.
Native: Sets the color range wider than the that of the input video source.

White Balance
You can adjust the colour temperature for more natural picture colours.
R-Offset / G-Offset / B-Offset / R-Gain / G-Gain / B-Gain: Changing the adjustment value will refresh the adjusted screen.
Reset: The previously adjusted white balance will be reset to the factory defaults.

Flesh Tone
You can adjust the flesh tone to be more or less red.
Changing the adjustment value will refresh the adjusted screen.

Edge Enhancement Off / On
You can emphasize object boundaries in the picture.

chewkl,

Greyscale adjustment available but no CMS. So it is a stripped down version of the 650. I believe the 650 has a full CMS.
