How did Milito get to play from the start? He is the first one who should know that he is not fit enough. Why did Chyggy seem like he hasn't been prepared at all? Always put pressure on Pinto with his bad passes. If he is surrounded by opponents, he just needs to kick the ball away to safety. That's basic IMO. Playing against Perotti, Kone and Navas absolutely demands more than just an experimental pair of defenders. Somehow, I do think that Pep doesn't mind to throw this cup away sad.gif

Yesterday was actually much worse than before doh.gif doh.gif At least in other matches, he showed some passes like the assist from Marquez yesterday. No sign of progression at all. Just some added madness.

Damn.. We still have to rely on pique-puyol.. If Gaby could recover his form then we'll have a good backup.. Chygy seems to be turning into another cacares.. Anybody fancy Muniesa? Not forgetting Rafael, but i'd prefer him at DM instead of CB coz he's inconsistent defensively but at DM he can do some playmaking.. Still he's no match for sergi tho..
*
Muniesa is currently struggling with fitness and injuries. If he has been eligible for Pep, I'm sure he would already have at least 3-4 matches under his belt right now.

Rafa failed to link the defenders and midfielders in Sevilla match. I think its because its been a long time since he last played as DM. Hopefully he will improve soon.

Somehow I feel Barca's situation in CDR is not that bad. Barca has been in such situation before. Last year, before the Lyon match, before the 6-2 famous result, chasing the match with 10 men for the whole 20 minutes at SB, and this year, during Super Cup, and the CWC final, not many realize our team is among the most resilient around.

Bojan really worked his socks off. His composure is still questionable, but with 3 assists to show, it was still a remarkable performance. Goal.com gave Messi 10 rating points. A bit too generous IMO, since he was not actually invincible, but with 3 goals and 1 assist, 9.5 seems like a more proper rating biggrin.gif Just glad that although we seem to forget how to win at home, we won in style away rclxms.gif rclxms.gif

Next, Sevilla away!!

Keita lead Mali to stage a brilliant comeback against Angola. He scored 2 goals. Congrats rclxms.gif rclxms.gif

QUOTE
Tough questions lead Pep Guardiola to think unthinkable and leave Barcelona

Those close to Guardiola say he is exhausted from the all-consuming nature of coaching Barcelona
Gabriele Marcotti

Unless you’ve been there, you won’t understand. Heck, even if you have been there and if you’re the kind of inveterate football animal whose existence is defined by what happens inside the chalky lines, you probably still won’t get it. But if you’re an intelligent, sensitive man like Frank Rijkaard, you’ll know where Pep Guardiola is coming from. Rijkaard, his predecessor at the Nou Camp, has been there.

Odds are, Rijkaard understands why, despite being pound for pound the most successful coach in the club’s history, despite the six trophies in 12 months, despite being Catalan born and bred, despite being 39 and handsome and wealthy, Guardiola might just want to walk away from it all before it is too late.

When Guardiola was appointed coach of Barcelona in the summer of 2008, he signed a two-year contract. Since then, he has turned down the opportunity to extend his deal, although he did make sure that his assistants were given pay rises, and has said that he will postpone a decision until the end of the season.

The official reason is that he wants to wait until after the club’s presidential elections this year, which will mean Joan Laporta leaving his post. The president has overseen one of the most successful spells in the club’s history, but, having served his new term, must step aside by June 15. However, those around Guardiola suggest there is more to it. Put simply, the man is physically and mentally exhausted.

“[Guardiola] is a very thoughtful person and he knows what he means to the club,” Laporta said last month. “He wants to carry on, but there are a number of things he wants to think about. I am optimistic, but it’s not something that you should decide in the short term.”

Those who have had the privilege of spending time with the Barcelona coach will know what Laporta means. Few men are as thoughtful and deliberate. And even fewer would have acted the way he has. Most coaches approach their senior officials for a new contract and hefty pay rise moments after winning silverware. He could have easily done so.

After all, he was paid less than £2 million last season, even with all the bonuses he earned. Were he in England, he would not even be in the top ten. Why not sign a long extension and get a nice bump in salary?

Besides, contracts aren’t worth the paper they’re written on; he could still have resigned at the end of the season and negotiated a nice payout.

But that is not what Guardiola does. Money is secondary. The bigger concern is burnout. And, precisely because he is, first and foremost, a Barcelona fan, he knows the history of the club and what it can do to managers. Especially Catalan ones.

If he lasts the season, he will be Barcelona’s longest-serving Catalan coach in 40 years. For a club so steeped in their regional identity, it is a remarkable statistic.

Equally remarkable is that, because of the way coaching Barcelona can be so brutal and all-consuming, only three men have spent as many as five consecutive seasons in the job. Rijkaard was one and by the time it ended, by his admission, he had become a nervous wreck who had to endure serious domestic problems and ended up moving into a hotel adjacent to the Nou Camp.

Professional athletes are conditioned to endure, to press on through pain and uncertainty, to not let down their team-mates. It’s a military-style ethos drilled into them from a young age and, presumably, Guardiola is no different.

Compounding everything is his status as a Catalan and a club icon. Having built one of the greatest sides in the city’s history, how can he turn his back on the club and walk away? Should he not show loyalty to Catalonia and to “Barcelonismo”? Would it not be a form of treason to leave it in someone else’s hands?

Tough questions, which explain why Guardiola is in no hurry to commit. Having made history, it is time to take stock and to decide whether it is worth it. Moments after winning the Club World Cup last month, he burst into tears. Those watching on TV were probably convinced they were tears of joy. But, as it later emerged, Guardiola was turning to his assistants, asking: “What now? Where do we go from here?”

Few men are as emotionally invested in their jobs. Fewer still are introspective enough to realise what is happening to them. If he does decide to say no más, it will be a loss to football. But perhaps it will be a gain for those who believe there is more to life.

Personally, I hope he will be staying. But I won't be surprised if he decides to refuse the contract renewal. If anyone knows how to evaluate the options that he has, it has to be himself. He knows the nature of the club.

The question is who will replace him when he goes? I wonder is it too much to ask Cruyff to continue what his 'student' has left? It will be more grander of a fairytale, if Cruyff continues the success of course. biggrin.gif

I'm happy though with the spirit of the players. They showed tremendous will when under pressure. Hoping somebody would kind enough to upload the full match video. I need it.

Kudos to Sevilla, because they succeed in absorbing such pressure. I'm sure many other teams would have been crushed.

We're missing toure and keita, like a game that requires muscle like last night, if either were there, dani doesnt need to thread back so often, and we know how good dani is at the other end of the pitch..

Yeap, we miss them. Its not that their covers are bad (i.e Busquets, Marquez), but none of them have the speed to cover Alves up. Mali lost yesterday iinm. So Keita may be available early for us.

Messi broke down after Copa elimitation; Dressing Room Agonized

Sport has reported that the away team dressing room at the Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium in Seville was a very unsafe place to be the night Barcelona were knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Sevilla. The Blaugrana players were not very happy with the elimination and were not the most mellow of humans as they manifested their displeasure of the defeat.

Lionel Messi could not restrain himself in the dressing room and collapsed into tears. Several team mates and later, the Coach himself, had to console him. The rest of the squad was in no less pain. Players were seen kicking the sidewalks in frustration. The water cooler for the players was thrown aside in anger. Anguished cries from the players were also heard emanating from within the dressing room.

Guardiola then addressed the squad and congratulated them for playing out of their skins. He said that the knock out was not the players’ fault and if anyone was to blame, it was him. He also appreciated the commitment and dedication of the players towards the club.

Original article.

If every details in the report is true, I think the players reacted badly. But it was obvious they played like their life is at stake in the match. They'd put everything.

Many people said that motivation is Barca's main problem this season. So far, it has been proven as a complete nonsense. I'm glad. Keep on fighting players.

Finally, some quotes:

Del Nido (Sevilla President)

“We have eliminated the best team of all time. It was a great game, and we are delighted. It was an exciting tie, and we both had chances to progress. I am very proud of the team.”

Jimenez (Sevilla coach)

”It’s been a great day. We’ve got through against the best team in the world and that is a big deal, we need to enjoy it. We are very happy to have got through the tie. We have not managed to win today, but the objective was to get through and we have done that. The players ran a lot and worked very hard. They have contested everything, because there is no other way to beat this team (Barcelona), who are the best in the world and have not lost a knockout tie in 18 months.”

Lol, easily won 4-0. Sevilla missed soo much of their first team members, that they didn't threaten us at all. IMO, the presence of Romaric alone could have brought a whole lot of difference for them. Ah well, that's football. Congrats to Messi for scoring his 100th and 101th goal for Barca. Schweeet revenge smile.gif

Oh, and thanks a lot to Iraizoz for sweeten up the revenge more biggrin.gif

I won't call him a legend yet. That statement would even flatter Messi very much. Although he is really well on his way to be one.

Ibra seems lost and sluggish especially after the league resumed. I think he can improve his game by trying to beat offside traps more often. Like he did against Sevilla at home during CDR. Henry can teach him that. He is the master in beating last defenders.

Well, all I can say is, once the summer election has its winner, anything can happen. The new president may want to maneuver his first major signing at the very early stage, like Laporta did when signing Ronnie. The question is which player this time? Cesc and Rooney are the main names quoted by media, because of the glamors of course.

But if Rooney comes, where will he play? LW? If Cesc comes, will he play as CM, while Iniesta be drifted wide left? I am certainly against both ideas. I would rather spend those 70 millions euros (Rooney's alleged transfer fee) on D. Silva instead. Imagine Messi and Silve both swapping position. If no D. Silva, that LW position should be Pedro's without question.

Well, here is what I found in the official website:

QUOTE
The new contract will not be signed until the end of the current season with the new President installed at the club. For the moment, Josep Guardiola has expressed his desire to stay for at least another season as first team coach, giving his word to the club on the matter.

official website

Seem like Barca is just trying to brush away all rumors regarding Pep's future. That's all. So I will contain my excitement, until I see that picture.

And I also heard that if Pep signs the new contract with the new president, the duration will only be one year, as a try out period running the team under the new board. If he is satisfied with the new board, he will sign a much longer contract, perhaps until the term of the next president ends. Actually this rumor has surfaced before, the last time I heard was in the latest Football Focus iinm.

Why Barca wouldn't try to keep him, or that he would want to leave for Man Utd is beyond me. Barca is a bigger club to United with no financial problems. These kinda things make me wonder... FYI, Barca extended his contract to 2011, the end of next season. which is weird considering everything he's earned for Barca (6 trophies in 2009!); he should be signed for much longer periods
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id...cc=4716&cc=4716
*
I believe Laporta is now sweating like hell, feeling nervous about Pep's decision. Pep also denied that he is considering to take SAF's post, and has demanded the Catalan media to stop asking any related question in any media conference. He is apparently disgusted with those rumors.

There are many rumors why he would wish duration of the new contract is only 1 year. But I believe that is because:

1) Try out period under the management of new president;
2) If the new president is not satisfied with his work, the cost of compensation Barca have to pay him will be minimal;
3) To reduce the chance of complacency occurring at his side.

And yes, you read it right, it was Pep who has demanded the 1 year contract. Not Barca.

Where are you guys? This thread has been strangely silent, in a week that is not so quiet in Spain. Plenty of issues we can talk about.

1) AS is helping RM to overturn CR red card decision, by providing the video of similar scuffle between Messi and Valiente. Messi was shown pushing Valiente in the video, while Valiente held his back. But yesterday, Valiente, Messi's 'victim', said CR's action cannot be compared to Messi's. Thanks Valiente for backing Messi up rclxms.gif rclxms.gif Messi has been silent so far.

2) I can't get the image of Filipe's ankle out of my head cry.gif cry.gif cry.gif cry.gif F**k!

3) We are in danger losing JDS, Thiago, Gai and Jeffren to British clubs, as their contracts expire this June doh.gif doh.gif Damn, those spoiled clubs surely don't have any idea to nurture their own players.

4) GDS goes on loan to Gala, to be reunited with Rijkaard. Lets pray he will blossom again rclxms.gif

Sabar faris, sabar tongue.gif At least he did something in the match. But he is indeed in a really bad patch. I think he was lost on the pitch. Y'know, same problem with what people say CR was having recently. Bigger players are always being blown for foul against smaller players. But on the other hand, we know very well how he was marked out in every game. There would always be an opponent marking him tightly from the back, and once the ball at Ibra's feet, the opponent would always challenge from behind, with hard tackle. Not saying that is bad from opponents, but Ibra is finding that not so easy to cope with right now. I've seen Ibra's being fault several time just because he played more physical against such opponents. I think Pep has more mental fine-tuning now. Earlier, it was for Pique, now it is time for Ibra.

Added on January 31, 2010, 1:54 pmGoal.com say our win was unconvincing. The commentator last night said that as well. I really don't have any idea why would they say that. Barca didn't have much trouble at all. Although our win was not as dominant as the 6-1 win last season, we are comfortable enoguh, and had Pedro scored with at least 3 more chances he fluffed over, people would have said something else. Not to say Ibra and Messi missed tons of chances as well.
