The problem with powerlifting, is it's a sport that requires you to first look past physical attractions and work to focus on strength and weaknesses. That's one of the biggest and toughest problems, because most guys have egos the size of one of the craters on Venus. The problem becomes exacerbated because of tempo/spandex fitness clubs where the attention is on the guy that looks gayest and has the biggest bicep and chest and everybodys interested in getting big, fast and easy.
Yet powerlifting is a tough arduous sport which requires analysis, technique, strength, a level of athleticism, patience, nutrition, money, and strength. Then there's another huge issue, which is the two schools of thought. Raw and equipped. Raw lifters think that equipped lifters are cheaters that try to limit ROM, and equipped lifters think that they're doing a good job as well in getting strong.
So internally itself, there's a ton of conflict. What more externally?
Weightlifting has one small advantage. It's way more popular because of history and the Olympics. Powerlifting, say that to 10 guys in the street, 8 will say "HAH?" 1 will mistake that for weightlifting and if you're lucky, the last guy will know that it involves deadlifting.
I think Pizzaboy made a clear picture on Powerlifting. In Australia, Powerlifting is a dying sport. you don't see as much participation as you can get in the early 90's etc. Kids these days prefer to go to the pub and drink their arse of and then go home with a major headache the next morning. It isn't the hardcore mentality that Powerliting isn't the number 1 sport anywhere you go. PL has been related to drug usage etc etc. But if we look at the bigger picture of sports generally, none of them are decent anyway (in terms of drugs etc). I said this earlier, all sports are drug tested, but not drug free.
The usage of a suit, bench shirt etc, is mainly for protection when you go heavier. PL concentrates alot on strength so you tend to push the weights up as you go. Eg; a super tight suit will tighten your posterior chain so that your back will have the arch throughout the movement (tightness). In the World Championship every year, you can see coaches around the world fit their athletes with SUPER tight suits and super tight wraps to the extend where the athletes couldn't even walk, they need to be carried to the platform. Some even have to cut the suit out after a comp because its too tight to take it off. Putting on a suit is already a b**ch. I'd say this, RAW powerlifters might look stronger, but that doesn't mean that Equipped powerlifters are 100% relying on equipments. We don't train equipped all the time, most of the time its strap down in a training suit .
The fact that powerlifters are often regarded as fat people is another common scene. I don't see why one couldn't get decently lean with PL. But of course, you need to eat big, pack up some big muscles and then try not to go crazy on burgers etc. There are lean powerlifters. It is all about the diet. Well of course we only have a handful of Super-Ripped guys, other than that, they are just commonly lean.
I'd love to see Malaysia getting affiliated by the IPF one day. Hopefully that will happen once I complete whatever I'm doing here and return back home and arrange something. We are equally capable of anyone else. Oh and when you look at score sheets, usually the Russians or the Scandinavian country athletes are on the top 3. No surprise because, the scene is huge there and the gap between these jokers and other athletes are massive they become not worth looking at, god knows what crap are they on, but like I said there is nothing we can do, they passed the drug test though they have some funky stuff running through their blood.
Most importantly , Powerlifting is about achieving a goal and being a better person in terms of discipline, dedication etc. A man without limbs would die for tendonitis , a paralyzed man would kill for sore hips. Nothing hardcore about that but it simply is to tell that , no sport on man's land is going to be easy; oly lifting, powerlifting, bodybuilidng, soccer etc .
