tanjq87: Apparently so - online somebody had to send his Sigma 50-500mm F4-6.3 EX DG "Bigma" a few times. Why can't they just put a metal geartrain, I don't know.

That said, I still honestly think it is a waste to get a big, fat, heavy full-frame lens which will limit your range on APS-C.

I sometimes regretted using the 17-35mm on my A700 as it was much fatter and took much more space than any APS-C lens which had much longer range. Fortunately, I got used to the short range (using invisibility techniques to get close.)

SpOOkY: Er, as I remember the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 EX DC for Sony does not have an AF/MF switch on the lens, as it does not have a lens motor. The Canon and Nikon versions with HSM, would have this AF/MF switch.

I am eager to see how the Sigma 24-70mm HSM is in real life. I know (with picture proof) that the Zeiss 24-70mm SSM is leaps and bounds over the Sigma 24-70mm non-HSM!

tanjq87: There are some Sigmas which are prone to gear stripping but the 17-70mm is not one of them.

The 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG and 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO 1:2 Macro are particularly prone.

You can refer to Dyxum's lens reviews to see if a lens is prone or not.

suchap69: It doesn't come with a battery.

croomaniac: I know of TWO Nikon users already using the black wrapping cloth. wink.gif

There's a copy selling at DigitalsMania which uses velcro to secure the corners. It's slightly more uh... Pampers-like with camouflage design. However it cannot fit my F20 + A900 + 24-105mm combo, or A900 + 135mm. sad.gif It's just a few centimeters short on all ends. I guess it's suitable for smaller combos though. Will post pictures when I get home!

Try to make a guess lah what light it is. biggrin.gif

alpha_company: I posted the wrapping cloth GIF files somewhere earlier in this thread. Or the previous one. I dunno lah.

QUOTE(albnok @ Jul 24 2009, 02:07 AM)
So what other accessories from Sony are real cool?

The new LCS-WR1AM wrapping cloth, that's what! I got one in brown. It's like a bag for your camera, but foldable!

The Japanese are very clever - this might've been something from their Origami books!

user posted image
Here, it wraps a Sony Alpha 900 body with Minolta 24-105mm F3.5-4.5(D) lens and Sony HVL-F58AM flash. Perfect general-purpose combo (which isn't as chunky as the Sony Carl Zeiss 24-70mm F2.8 SSM.)

The ring at the end, is an elastic band that can catch onto the lens. Practice will tell you whether to put the camera more towards the center or towards the sides, so that the elastic band will wrap around the lens nicely.

Here, it wraps a Sony Alpha 900 body with Minolta 24-105mm F3.5-4.5(D) lens and Sony HVL-F20AM flash. Perfect social event/party combo! (Alternatively, a smaller Minolta/Sony 50mm F1.4 can be used...)

user posted image
Of course, it is not limited to small lenses - here it wraps a Sony Alpha 900 body with Sony Carl Zeiss 135mm F1.8 lens.

It would've fit the Sony HVL-F20AM flash in as well, but the HVL-F58AM flash would not fit, so it would go into its own belt pouch. Which isn't half bad because you don't need to carry any camera bags at all! I don't find it fashionable to be walking around with a huge backpack, looking like a turtle in the process (I've always been a fan of sling bags.)

There is, however, the Optimus Prime trailer paradox... where does the cloth go when it's unwrapped?

Kul | Mo0, the Sigma 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 EX DG can be used on full-frame.

clivengu: Backfocus means it focuses somewhere behind where you wanted it to focus. Try at 17mm and 50mm, and close range and long range. If it's all good then no problem lah.

New accessories! I particularly like the LCS-LC1AM's instructions (top-right corner).

Here's the Sony LCS-WR1AM wrapping cloth next to the Fotofile.net Trekking Pack. The Trekking Pack is a bit smaller, but the extra width of the Sony wrapping cloth is needed for the Sony Alpha 900 and lenses (or HVL-F58AM flash). The way the Trekking Pack folds makes it impossible unless you have a smaller SLR.

user posted image
The inside is more padded but thicker and thus harder to refold. Note the velcro strips on the corners, very clever!

user posted image
Folded up.

Guess what's inside!

A Sony Alpha 700 + VG-C70AM battery grip + Tamron 17-50mm F2.8. Yes it fits!

Braynumb: As far as I know the screen protector/shade is for the A230/A330/A380 but I have not tried to fit it on any other body.

bennazis: It was RM95 retail, the street price should be much cheaper. I bring it along with just one lens (really, most times you don't need all those other lenses) and a F20 flash. A lot of people like it, and 2 Nikon owners have already got the black version of it! yawn.gif

Having tried the velcro copy next to the wrapping cloth, I would say that a thicker material, while it might feel safer, is less able to (or not able to) wrap larger cameras. It folds into something much bigger.

SHOfrE3zE: I always liked the pyramid head. Very classic look like the old manual-focus SLRs.

MemorableStudios: Looking forward to it (for all you 2470Z owners...)

raist86: Yes, the A900 uses a CMOS, and when downsized to 12 megapixels you get the same noise performance of the A700. If the price is just a bit higher, it will be a worthwhile companion to your Sigma 24-70mm F2.8.

achew: Disappear 10 days, come back with a new lens... sounds like a good deal!

I noticed you don't shoot much wide-angle. So you could use just the Sony 50mm F1.4 and Tamron 90mm F2.8 Macro. The 16-80mm will be annoying to use on the A900 (you'll discover why, when framing). If you want a cheap wide, there's the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8, or a Sony 20mm F2.8, or Sony 28mm F2.8 (though I wouldn't recommend it unless you're really strapped for cash.)

You'll be surprised how wide the 50mm can be on full-frame. It will become a lot more usable.

The A900 went for USD2900 retail, and locally RM9999 retail. The street price was RM8500 (and some got it for RM7xxx now.) So that's about 15% off retail.

Supposing the A850 went for USD2000 retail, which is RM7000 (retail!) So I would estimate RM5xxx (near the middle.)

ahtsong: I have the Minolta 24-105mm F3.5-4.5 (D) for my A900.

The plus sides is that it is damn small, smaller than the CZ16-80mm, shorter than the 18-70mm kit lens, and it is F3.5-4.5.

However if you expect a Zeiss out of it... no, it will not do that. The 24-105mm however is superb for studio work from F8 to F22 though where the 70-105mm range comes in real handy. You won't get the same image quality of the 16-80mm at F4.5 though but if you're shooting landscapes go F11 and you're happy.

Seng_Kiat: Yes, the A700 screen vividness and sharpness matches my CRT monitor. Also it uses a 640x480 3" VGA screen (your 40D has a 320x240 3" QVGA...)

achew:

USD2500 = RM8750

We can definitely already get the A900 for less than that, in street price. Some have gotten theirs for RM7xxx. So the A850 should be cheaper than that!

The A850 has 3 FPS versus the A900's 5 FPS, and it has a better burst rate than the A900 (not too relevant for me.)

Yes, unfortunately, there is no pop-up flash, but the F20 is cheap (RM420 is one local quote) and it is both a flash that can bounce as well as a wireless trigger.

The A500/A550 might be worth the wait. We'll see.

Banzai_san: The A850 doesn't have Live View.

However, it is full-frame, just like your Nikon FE2. The A330/A380 will have a tiny viewfinder, while the A850 viewfinder is HUGE! (Only thing bigger than that, is the Canon 1Ds MkIII and the A900.)

Full-frame digital SLR viewfinder coverage:

Canon 1DsMkIII = 0.76x * 100% = 76%
Sony A900 = 0.74x * 100% = 74%
Sony A850 = 0.74x * 98% = 72.52%
Nikon D3x = 0.7x * 100% = 70%
Canon 5DMkII = 0.71x * 98% = 69.58%
Nikon D700 = 0.72x * 95% = 68.4%

If you put one camera to each eye, you can see the difference in size quite obviously.

kopitiam: That is too cute!

achew: Oops I mean:

Magnification * viewfinder coverage = multiplier of sensor

So, a 35.9mm x 24mm sensor like on the A900, will appear to have a 26.566mm x 17.76mm surface area after multiplying by the magnification and viewfinder coverage.

A Nikon D300 has 0.94x 100% coverage but the sensor is smaller (23.6mm x 15.8mm) so in the end it still looks smaller (22.184mm x 14.852mm).

Of course, the 100% does mean what you framed, is what you get.

clivengu: Some FF lenses are cheaper than their APS-C counterparts.

Sony 50mm F1.4 = RM1100
Sigma 30mm F1.4 DC = RM1700

The Zeiss lenses, are of course more recently priced.

From what I've heard, the A550 is not the cut-cost version of the A700 (if you mean from A200 to A230). It is likely that the A550 will be similiar to the A700, just that by now a proper A700 replacement will have a lot more features.

Supposing:

A700 = RM4400 street price in 2007
A900 = RM8300 street price in 2008
A850 = RM6000 street price in 2009

A700 = RM3200 street price in 2009
A230 = RM1500 street price in 2009
A330 = RM1800 street price in 2009
A380 = RM2400 street price in 2009 * not sold in Malaysia

I would guess that the A500 would be very close to the current A700 price, and the A550 just a bit more. This is including the A700 feature set but probably with Live View.

When the A700 came out, it was closer to specifications and price to a Canon 40D with the Nikon D300 costing RM5400 instead and having more features. A proper A700 replacement should add features... but where in between the A550 and A850 would its price be?
