Since two of our members had their macbook pro's stolen recently, and questions arising on whether we could track out stolen macs, I thought it'd repost my answer to that thread here:

If you're looking for some sort of tracking...
the answer is Orbicule's Undercover.
Their website explains everything: http://www.orbicule.com/undercover/
give it a read.

I got this for my 13" MBP the moment i got it.
But for maximum protection, it doesn't stop there.
I enabled the firmware protection, which requires a password to enter the boot menu so you can't reformat or even boot from a different partition. I don't know what happens if you change the hard disk though but I think it won't even allow the new hard disk to be used?
I enabled the option in the security preference pane to "request password 5 mins after sleep or screen saver begins". Of course that means u should have a login password.
Since the Undercover software works by tracking the user while online, I need to enable the thief to be able to use my mac. So I enable fast user switching and created another Standard Account (NOT admin) for the thief to use which doesn't have a login password. I also locked down my personal folders/home folder and can only be accessed by me. So in the event my mac gets stolen, the thief has no choice but to use the Standard Account I created and can do pretty much any basic thing except anything that requires admin access. He can't access my folders but he can use every bit of the remaining available space for his own use.
Then hopefully, in due time, I will be able to track that bugger down. And hopefully he/she ain't a tech geek.

hey i plan to give orbicule's undercover a try. was the purchasing complicated for you bro?
any positive/negative feedback? smile.gif

*
yeah. i felt that too. but it went away after using the extension of the charger cable instead of attaching the big (white square thing) straight to the plug. hahha hope it works for you. biggrin.gif

Im guessing the drive is formatted in fat32. There's a limit of 4gb per file
*
which drive? file source or file destination. urm i can transfer numerous files that are more than 4gb but one single file that is more than 4gb is unable to b transferred.

Dear all SIFU / user of MAC,

Im planning to change my laptop very soon. Im looking for Macbook PRO 13" RM5599.

May i know this spec enough to run AUTO CAD? And i plan to upgrade to 128GB SSD.

Regards,

Kevin
*
hey dude. urm i think autocad needs pretty minimal graphic requirements to run. so it doesnt really matter which mbp you choose. totally different story if you plan to run 3ds max.

Hey I'm thinking of getting a Macbook Pro for college. Probably going for the 13 inch one.

My question is, is it suitable for a student studying commerce/stuff involving figures?
*
urm but why are you choosing mac/apple? bcos of the OS? bcos of the name? yeah and you shud consider software compatibility as mentioned, and price. biggrin.gif

I'm choosing a Mac simply because I've never tried one lol. Anyway this is just another possibility. My main concern is the incompatibility of softwares.
*
hahha good excuse. biggrin.gif what better time to try a mac den now when the prices are comparable with other window-based brands. (esp the 13" entries). yeah do check whether the softwares and compatible thou. had an issue with that upon purchasing my mbp earlier this year. thumbup.gif

QUOTE(Sol_FW @ Dec 18 2009, 05:47 PM)
Well, if you're getting a white Macbook, you should know that its major shortcomings are the lack of ports, and its polycarbonate plastic body scratches easily. In my opinion, it is better to get a Macbook Pro because it has a stronger chassis, SD card slot, FireWire 800, better screen and illuminated keyboard.

I'm not experiencing any real problems with my Macbook Pro 13". In fact, it is much better than my old Vaio FW in terms of stability, ease of use, graphics and overall performance. There are some quirks here and there but most of them could be solved through software updates.

If you're going to use this for class, Microsoft Office is a must for compatibility. Well, you could install a Mac version of it or install Office 2007 in Windows via Boot Camp. The original copy of Office 2008 is RM599 but maybe there's a better deal, maybe you could as the other forumites about this as well. I have both iWork and Office 2008 installed and to be honest, I prefer iWork. It is easier to use but of course, compatibility with Office is still a worry. I myself am a student and assignments come in and out like water.

You would also need a DVI to VGA adapter if you plan on using your notebook alongside with a projector. That'll cost RM99, if I'm not mistaken. This is a must if you want to present a slideshow made by Keynote because I heard that there's some compatibility issue there and also availability of certain fonts on non-mac machines.

Battery is not an issue on Macbooks and/or Macbook Pros because their batteries are of high capacity. Mine could last around 5 ~ 6 without the use of WiFi and 3 ~ 4 hours with WiFi on a single charge. It's perfect for me because there's 27 laptops and there are only around 4 power outlets in my class.

You might also feel awkward when first using the OS X because they way apps install and handled is different on OS X. You could easily get watch a tutorial video from the Apple website.

Also, there are only 2 USB ports, so you might want to opt for a USB replicator and also an external hard disk because the hard disk on the Macbook Pro is only 160GB while it is 250GB on the White Macbook.

That's my 2 cents, hope it helpsĀ  blush.gif

p/s: are you sure iWork wont work as good on window-based pc? plan on getting iWork, but if it means i need to get a projector alongside it, hahha i might actually need to think twice. shocking.gif

Dear All,

Need some help before I purchase my MBP tomorrow. Is 2gb ram good enough for surfing, occasional gaming such as left for dead, video and movie watching, Itunes and Blackberry as well as office work at home? Also what about hard disk space, is 160gb enough or I can upgrade cheaper outside myself for both ram and hard disk later when I have money. Thanks
*
urm firstly i dont know which mbp you are getting so i cant really advise on what you shud do. but from the info you provided, i think 2gb is enough for the stuff you wanna do. seems pretty basic. nod.gif but you might wanna up the 160gb hardisk space. but dont have to buy from machines or wherever you are planning to buy your mac with cos its usually more ex. buy seperately. hdd are even available at GS. thumbup.gif

Thanks all for the feedback. Ordered my MBP 13.3 2.26ghz via Apple Online just now. Will upgrade later myself the hardisk and ram when needed and after warranty expires. Was torn between the macbook white and this but decided to go for the MBP for its form factor and slightly less weight compared to MBW. Also saw somebody trying to sell off his MBW after a few days and upgrading to MBP, I would not wanna be in that situation. Just got a call from my credit card company on approval. Woohoo Mac here I come...........Actually this has been on my wishlist for quite some time so its like a dream come true.
*
hahha congratulations! thumbup.gif althou after buyin a couple of macs, every purchase seems like the first mac for me, cos every mac gives me something different to look forward to. but either way, welcome to the world of mac Matt. nod.gif
