AS the world's biggest and richest club, Manchester United reach a global fanbase.

Part of the attraction for fans around the world has been the football luminaries, such as George Best and Sir Bobby Charlton, who have graced the Old Trafford turf in a Manchester United shirt over the years.

Recently, Manchester United have continued to attract or develop some of the game's biggest names, with England stalwarts such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham having been regular fixtures in the Reds line-up.

The Manchester United team, past and present, reads like a who's who of world football.

It is only fitting that a great team should grace a great stadium. And with Old Trafford's recent development and the closure of Wembley, the ground is easily the largest in English football, holding in excess of 60,000 fans.

Despite this capacity, the demand to see United in action is so great that tickets are hard to come by.

But it isn't only Manchester United fans who flock to Old Trafford. The standard of the ground is such that it regularly hosts high-profile games, most notably, the Champions League Final and Great Britain rugby league games.

Rock fans have also made use of the Reds's facilities, watching a number of high-profile acts at the ground.

But it's football that will forever be synonymous with the Reds famous ground - and with good reason.

The last decade has seen Manchester United under the shrewd leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson maintain a virtual stranglehold on the Premiership crown.

Manchester United has won the league no fewer than 17 times in their history - 10 times in the last 11 seasons. They are also Cup Kings too, winning the FA cup 11 times, the league cup twice, as well as winning the European Super Cup, European Cup Winner's Cup, and 3 times being crowned European Cup champions.

Manchester United has long become a name associated with success both on and off the pitch.

As club profits continue to grow, Manchester United have become one of the richest sports clubs on the planet.

With supporters club branches on every continent, it's hard to go any where in the world and not see somebody wearing the famous red shirt of Manchester United.

Burnley have completed the signing of Manchester United youngster Richard Eckersley.

The full-back has inked a four-year deal at Turf Moor after turning down a new deal at United.

As he is under 24, Burnley will have to agree a compensation package with United for the 20-year-old.

Eckersley came through the ranks at Old Trafford and he was tipped for a big future at the club.

However, Clarets boss Owen Coyle has managed to persuade him to turn his back on United and move to the Premier League new boys.

Eckersley is Burnley's fifth new signing of the summer following the arrivals of Tyrone Mears, Steven Fletcher, David Edgar and Brian Easton.

Malaysia set for Reds' arrival

QUOTE
Around 50,000 fans are expected to watch United's first open training session of the 2009 Asia Tour in Malaysia on Friday.

Supporters with special passes will see the Reds being put through their pre-season paces at Kuala Lumpur's Bukit Jalil Stadium from 10:30 BST (17.30 local), though this time is subject to change.

Julian Kam, chief executive of tour organisers ProEvents International Sdn Bhd, said: "We would like to encourage fans to come early, to ensure they get to the stadium on time to catch the training."

United play a Malaysia XI at the Bukit Jalil Stadium on Saturday, kick-off 10:30 BST (17.30 local). Fans can still buy tickets by calling the Ticketpro hotline on 03-78807999. Only 15,000 tickets are left, priced at RM58 (GBP11), and the match is expected to be a sell-out. Fans are advised to use public transport.

The Reds fly out to Kuala Lumpur on Thursday afternoon and ManUtd.com will have comprehensive coverage of the tour, starting with the travelling party and the latest pre-season photos of the squad.

The Far East trip also takes in Indonesia (July 20), Korea (July 24) and China (July 26). Read all the latest news and features in our dedicated Asia Tour 2009 section.

Gibson agrees new deal

QUOTE
Darron Gibson has agreed a three-year contract extension at Old Trafford and is aiming to challenge for regular first-team involvement.

The new deal keeps the 21-year-old Republic of Ireland international at the club until at least June 2012.

"I am very happy to commit my future to United," Darron told ManUtd.com.

"Last season I enjoyed every opportunity and when I got my chance I wanted to prove what I could do. I hope to continue that this season."

Gibson made 14 appearances for the Reds last season, playing an integral part in United's Carling Cup triumph. He also scored three goals, including an outstanding long-distance effort against Hull City on the final day of the league season.

Sir Alex Ferguson says he expects even more from the Irish central midfielder this season.

"Darron was one of the young players who emerged last season as a United first-team player," he told us.

"His appearance ratio did not really reflect the high regard in which we hold him, as he has constantly worked hard to challenge for a first team spot."

Manchester United chief executive David Gill is not ruling out the possibility of further new signings before the close of the transfer window.

Following the departures of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez over the summer, United had been tipped to spend big in the transfer market.

To date, the Premier League champions have brought in Antonio Valencia, Michael Owen and Gabriel Obertan for an outlay of less than £20million.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson stated earlier this week that he was not planning to make any more major signings after being linked with the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Sergio Aguero.

However, ahead of the club's pre-season trip to Asia, Gill admits there could still be some transfer activity in the coming weeks.

Gill said: "I will start each day with the usual emails and correspondence, and I'm sure there will be some player activity going on while we are over there."

Went and asked Speedy in Pavillion. Apparently, they yet to receive the approval sticker that need to stick on the box so that's why they are not selling our Season Review 08/09 yet sweat.gif

Btw, do we need to bring along the match day ticket 2gether with the training pass? unsure.gif

Who is Utd new boy?

QUOTE
Top Norwegian scout Tor-Kristian Karlsen offers his assessment of shock Manchester United signing Mame Biram Diouf.

Manchester United's capture of Senegalese striker Mame Biram Diouf may have stunned the footballing world - and the player himself - but it could prove to be yet another canny piece of business from that shrewd mover Sir Alex Ferguson, who no doubt hopes Diouf will have a similar impact to his last shock signing from Molde, a certain Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

Having arrived in the picturesque coastal town of Molde - currently hosting a world-famous jazz festival - as a teenager in 2007 along with his countryman and striking partner, Pape Pate Diouf (locally branded "the mames & the papes"), the front-man has made great progress this season after initially showing big promise but little end product.

Helped by the sublime passing and playmaking abilities of Molde's third Senegalese, El Hadji Makhtar Thioune - a new recruit this season - Mame Biram Diouf has shrugged off his earlier struggles to score regularly and show that not only can he sniff out a great chance, he can put it away with the best of them.

Diouf was already a hot topic among European scouts when Molde hosted Brann last Sunday. In front of a dozen potential buyers the hot shot striker scored four goals, including a hat-trick within the opening ten minutes of the game.

The astonishing display of power, strength and finesse stoked the rumours linking the striker with a move abroad to a roar, with several German, Dutch and French clubs reportedly interested in signing the player. Yet when Old Trafford was revealed as the player's destination at a press conference given by Molde on Friday lunchtime, there was a general feeling of disbelief that he should end up at such a club.

But there were helpful circumstances coupled with the striker's hot form which conspired in favour of the deal. In 1996 Ole Gunnar Solskjær, currently the reserve team manager at Old Trafford and a firm Sir Alex Ferguson protégée was signed from the same Norwegian side, amid similar raised eyebrows, and the Scot will be hoping the African can script a similar Cinderella-story.

Moreover, the fact that Diouf is represented by Solskjær's longstanding agent and friend, Jim Solbakken, himself responsible for bringing several Norwegian academy players to Manchester United, would have done him no harm either.

Although the details of the financial settlements between the clubs are to remain undisclosed - the press are speculating about a fee of around £4 million - Diouf will remain at Molde until the end of the Norwegian season in order to help their title quest (they are currently trailing Rosenborg by four points). Having only represented his country briefly at youth level, United will face a challenge to convince the Home Office to grant the Senegalese a work permit upon his scheduled arrival in January.

So will the gamble pay off? Diouf's ability to perform in a physical European league speaks in his favour and he's hoping to follow in the footsteps of John Obi Mikel, another African recruit via Norwegian league football which, bar the obvious shortcomings in technique and overall quality, is comparable to the Premier League in that the pace is high and time on the ball is limited.

And whereas dozens of African players have failed to settle in Scandinavia, Diouf has adapted to the harsh, chilly climate of coastal Norway (coming from tropical Senegal he was already accustomed to heavy rainfall - so Manchester should be a doddle for him) and developed into a hard-working, disciplined and tactically adept team player who has also blended in well socially, showing a maturity that beggars his young age.

In addition to his new-found goalscoring abilities, the young Senegalese also sports an impressive physique, blistering pace and a direct approach to his game that makes him a nightmare for opposing defenders.

Combined with a more than decent aerial ability, the eagerness to fight for every ball and run for 90 minutes - which should endear him to the Old Trafford faithful - Diouf is on his way to turning into a complete forward who might just surprise this winter... though not those in Sir Alex's camp.

Tor-Kristian Karlsen is a renowned football scout who's been on the staff of Watford, Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Hannover 96 among others.

Went to their training session and sat with my friends at Red Gate area. Too bad they didn't really train long enough in the half near the Red Gate end, mainly the other half of the field else can try to snap some clearer pictures.

The pictures I took (just normal digicam blush.gif ), a lot I tried to zoom to max so the outcome are quite blurry sweat.gif
