Owen - I can handle pressureQUOTE Michael Owen is hoping to show he can handle the pressure at Manchester United by filling the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo.
Owen was a shock capture for the Premier League champions on a free transfer after leaving relegated Newcastle United at the end of last season.
The 29-year-old striker opened his United scoring account on his debut against a Malaysia XI on Saturday.
Ronaldo, who has left Old Trafford for Real Madrid in an £80million switch, scored a remarkable 118 goals in 292 United appearances
Owen has been awarded Ronaldo's famous No.7 shirt, which was previously worn by David Beckham and George Best, and is confident he will step up in the new season and prove his quality.
He said in The Sun: "This is a big chance to show that I can do it again, to show that I can handle the pressure and the expectation.
Expectation
"I've handled the pressure and scrutiny before and all the managers I've played under will all say I can handle it."
He added: "That shirt has pressures of its own and some great players have worn it in the past, but I will do it justice.
"The manager asked me to wear the shirt. He said a player needs broad shoulders for it and he asked me if I felt I could handle it.
"I said 'yes' without hesitation. I know it represents so much. Two big players have left Manchester United in Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez.
"There were a lot of goals in Ronaldo and I'm here to hopefully fill that gap." http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11661_5441293,00.html

Manchester United battle Chelsea in chase for £8m Douglas CostaQUOTE Manchester United are trying to salvage a deal for the Brazilian Under-21 international Douglas Costa but face competition from Chelsea as they try to persuade his club, Gremio, to lower their valuation of the midfielder.
United are willing to pay an initial fee of £8m for the 18-year-old including various add-ons depending on his success at Old Trafford, but the deal looked to have faltered when Gremio opened talks by demanding £21m. The Premier League champions have made it clear they consider that to be exorbitant but, after several weeks of negotiations, Gremio have now relaxed their stance and the two clubs are attempting to reach a compromise for the latest player to be tagged in Brazil as "the new Ronaldinho".
An already complex series of negotiations has been further complicated by Chelsea's interest while Real Madrid have also been asked to be kept informed and Villarreal have submitted a bid of £6m plus add-ons. Manchester City had also shown tentative interest but have not followed that up with anything more substantial.
The picture is expected to become clearer next weekend when the influential deal-maker Chris Nathaniel travels to Brazil to try to clarify with Gremio exactly what they will accept before reporting back to the player's admirers. United are considered to be in the most prominent position, with the player favouring a move to England, but Chelsea's interest is genuine and it could become a matter of which club is willing to pay the most.
For a deal to Old Trafford to materialise, Gremio will have to accept that United will not pay what they consider to be over the odds for a player who has only just broken into his club's first team. David Gill, United's chief executive, has already informed Gremio that a deal is impossible at the current price. Chelsea, similarly, are not interested unless the players valuation is slashed to a more realistic mark. http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/ju...-united-chelsea

Nani - I can score more goalsQUOTE Manchester United winger Nani is confident he can improve his goals output this season and establish himself as a regular at Old Trafford.
Nani has been an inconsistent performer for United since joining from Sporting Lisbon two years ago and he has been linked with a move away from the club.
He scored just once in the Premier League last term, and that was the final goal in a 4-0 home victory over relegated West Bromwich Albion.
However, he marked his first appearance of pre-season with a goal as United secured a 3-2 win over a Malaysia XI on Saturday.
And the Portugal international is now determined to enjoy a greater impact with the Red Devils following the departure of his compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo.
Work hard
"I enjoyed it and I hope to do more," Nani told MUTV about his performance in the Far East.
"I think that this season I can do better than the last two seasons. I'm working towards that.
"I am very happy to be here. I have the conditions to score more goals.
"I know that if I work hard every day and every game I can do much better, and I hope to score more goals this season." http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11661_5444519,00.html
