Mad Catz Comments on FightStick LeakQUOTE
July 16, 2009 - Yesterday afternoon, Play-Asia, one of Japan's largest online retailers of video games and accessories, posted a listing for a Mad Catz FightStick comparable to the Street Fighter IV Tournament Edition FightStick released last year, but with one remarkable difference – it was missing all of the Street Fighter graphical goodness.
Aside from the lack of Ken and Ryu, the Mad Catz FightStick listed had all of the same features and the same MSRP of $149.99. Since then, however, the product has been yanked by Play-Asia, so, what's the deal? Is Mad Catz launching a new line of FightSticks unbeknownst to us? We contacted Mad Catz's Global PR & Communications Manager, Alex Verrey for more. Here's what he had to say:
"The range of Mad Catz Street Fighter IV FightSticks and FightPads has been wildly successful and many Asian territories have expressed great interest in stocking the range. Sadly, our Street Fighter IV license does not extend to Asia so for the Asian regions we are releasing the FightSticks and the FightPads without the Street Fighter IV graphics. The products will be identical in every way which counts. No features have been changed other than the removal of the Street Fighter art and the loss of the highly collectible Street Fighter IV box art. At this time the range is planned only for release in Asian territories and will NOT be available in any other region."
There you have it, folks. Another mystery solved and crisis averted by the crack team here at IGN. And to think, Play-Asia would have gotten away with it if it weren't for us meddling kids.
My opinion:
• Reduction of LOCAL pricing (official SRP still at US$150) to the RM500 range
• For non-modders - a cheaper full-Sanwa stick with the EXTRAS* (*pay an additional RM150-200 vs HRAP3)
• For modders - while the white shell gives it a nice Mac-like outlook, I feel that there will be less colour schemes to match with the plain ol' vanilla - unless you resort to painting it which requires the full disassembly and expertise. Even more concerning, while the side plastic area looks longer long-lasting, I can't say the same for its body (main middle section). The white may turn to a yellow-ish tint as those of you who own white Sanwa buttons already notice, furthermore making the white outlook look imbalanced.
EXTRA:
I was just going through the EVO pictures stream happening this weekend, and Alex Valle is spotted using the new Comic-Con Limited Edition TE:

Another huge-ass picture:

The second picture makes the orange look pinkish, inaccurately processed via a camera phone. Anyway, this is the real thing Seth has been teasing us with, through
his blog at Capcom-Unity. Do notice the box as well, at the right side of the Valle picture. The real thing.
I predict eBay's gonna be full of these things at ridiculously marked-up prices - a standard plan for Limited Edition items companies churn out just for Comic Con each year.
EXXTRA:
More pics.
This time of a chick:

And an army of white TEs:
