Carrie (2013)

People are mean.

This is the second Carrie movie I have seen, the first being Carrie (1976).

Both actually well made.

This is a horror movie, but not because of ghosts or ghouls/psychotic killers.

This is a horror movie because of a scared little girl with an unstable mother, who discovered she had telekinetic powers...

To make things worst, she goes to school with probably the worst bunch of kids...

Bleak, bleak movie.

Definitely not something you watch with little children...

The Relic (1997)

Wow, for a 1997 movie, I am actually quite impress by the transfer.

Please be warned. This is a dark movie (picture and story wise) so if you cannot stand dark scenes over and over again, this is not a movie for you.The sound, kiddies, the sound is awesome. Very good workout for your subwoofer(s?). There are tiny sound I can hear on this that I did not hear on other formats.

This actually, I feel, is an under appreciated horror movie.

It is a little out there, but the people involved really put in effort to make it entertaining.

And for me, it is!!

If you like "creature" horror, this is pretty good.

Horror by decades 1920s

Der Golem: Wie Er In Die Welt Kam (aka The Golem: How He Came Into The World) (1920) [German]
Directors: Paul Wegener/ Carl Boese
Starring: Paul Wegener, Albert Steinrueck

Have not watched this but I want to. Have to locate a copy first... sad.gif

Das Kabinett Des Doktor Caligari (aka The Cabinet of Dr Caligari) (1920) [German]
Director: Robert Weine
Starring: Werner Krauss, Conrad Veidt

I also have not watch this and am hoping to locate a copy...

Nosferatu, Eine Symponie Des Grauens (1922) [German]
Director: F.W. Murnau
Stariing: Max Schreck, Gustov von Wangenheim

This was release on bluray end of last year and looking at the age of the movie, I do not think we can ask for a better representation. Max Schreck will forever be associated with the role, so much so that in the year 2000, director E. Elias Merhige wrote a love letter to this movie in the form of a movie called Shadow of the Vampire starring John Malkovich, Willem Dafoe & Udo Kier. This really highlight how "progressive" German was towards this new medium Nickelodein, much much earlier compared to the Americans. Very haunting movie. If you do not find it haunting, it is because, it has been emulated so many times, you are just very familiar with the "style"

The Phantom of the Opera (1925) [US]
Director: Rupert Julian
Starring: Lon Chaney, Mary Philbin, Norman Kerry

I have this on DVD. A pretty good adaptation of Gaston Leroux book. Lon Chaney (the man with the thousand faces) is very convincing here as The Phantom. Alas, I believe the musical version is more popular (sexy? laugh.gif) today.

Well, this is not a exhaustive list of horror movies from the 20s, just my little, wish list. Feel free to add your wish list. I'm hoping to find the time to do this decade by decade. Let's see if I manage that.

See yas at the movies

Constantine (2005)

I am going straight to the point here, I LOVE this movie.

I understand it bombed from the perspective of box office, still I like this movie.

It is being categories as a fantasy horror, and it defines the movie pretty well.

Keanu Reeves is John Constantine, much to the horror of the comic book fans, and I think he did a great job. I think the comic fans wanted something more edgy (Constantine is a chain smoking, foul mouth, could not careless & yellow trenchcoat wearing con man/mystic!!) and Keanu is not quite that, but I like him in the role. Hope that clears up his character... laugh.gif

Rachel Weisz is the lady lead and as always Shia LaBeouf the awkward side kick... have you noticed that that is the ONLY role he plays, no matter what movie he is in... laugh.gif

It is a shame that the movie did not do well in the box office. I would have love a sequel to this movie.

Will Disney/Marvel tearing up the box office with their comics material, maybe it is time Warner/DC rethink their Vertigo material... Sandman maybe??...

Oculus (2013)

Hm... what can I say about this movie.

First, it was made in 2012, and was only release in 2013.

The Good

Made with USD 5,000,000 budget (very modest in this day and age)

The leads Brenton Thwaites & Karen Gillan (especially their young counterparts Garrett Ryan & Annalise Basso) actually managed their roles, well.

The Bad

Katee Sackhoff (Starbucks anyone?) as the caring mother??!

The movie requires to jump between now and 10 years back... And to make it worst, the use the some method of filming between the two time periods, making them indistinguishable! Not very well thought out.

The Ugly

This movie script broken the cardinal rule or "reporting", The Why, Where, When and How. It did not even attempt to answer the Why??? And there lays the biggest stumbling block to the movie!!

I agree, this makes a better thriller than a horror movie per se...

I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998)

Where I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) has Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Anne Heche etc, this movie has Jack Black & Brandy??

Please note that the ABOVE is NOT a compliment...

This movie followed hot at the heels of it more successful predecessor, and in a word it's story is... INSIPID!!

This doo doo was made with USD 65,000,000 and DID NOT MAKE BACK IT'S MONEY AT THE BOX OFFICE.

I hope my stance on this movie is perfectly clear...

AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE.

The Ninth Gate (1999)

There was alot of buzz around this movie.

Roman Polanski's second venture into the supernatural (the first being Rosemary's Baby (1968)).

Roman Polanski also wrote the script for this movie, based on Arturo Pérez-Reverte's 1993 novel The Club Dumas.

This movie had a budget of $38 million and made $58.4, although, from a box office point of view, it flopped in the States.

While writing the script Polanski envision Johnny Depp as the lead, and in later interview stated that Johnny gave him a very flat delivery, nothing like how he had imagined it...

Interesting movie. It is more like a detective movie rather then a supernatural movie, and have to add, it works!

Revolved around three 300 years old books that supposedly able to call on the Devil himself!!

Also interesting how Polanski depicts the rich in Europe, bored and jaded!!

One other point I like to make here, the transfer to High Def is not the best I have seen. Color looks washed and the movie on the whole was grainy...

Movie itself is very well made.

If you like Roman Polanski, you know what to do.

Guys, I had a hard time remembering this particular scene was from which movie.

It potrayed this two girls, Donna & Angie living in an apartment with Lou which is a guy friend. They received this doll named Anabelle. Doll showed creepy signs like writings on paper and appeared not where it should be. They dumped it, but it showed up in their room again. Lastly, they had to call Ed & Lorraine Warren for help.

Was it from The Conjuring?

Beginning of the year has been disappointing... and looking forward, there is only

Dracula Untold (2014)
Paranormal Activity 5 (2014)

Scheduled....

The horror... THE HORROR...

Rosemary's Baby (2014) Part One

I have never read Ira Levin novel, though I have watched the Rosemary's Baby (1968) movie.

The movie took place in New York city, and this mini series occurs in Paris, France.

In the movie, Rosemary's psyche is being question. (Eg. is she delusional??) where as in the mini series, that is place out of the door and things that go bump in the night is never questioned (at least not in the first part)

Also in the movie, Rosemary is very isolated, where in the mini series, things are more... lacking a better term, "tactile"...

The cast is stellar in the mini series,

Zoe Saldana as Rosemary
Patrick J. Adams (of Suits fame) as Guy Woodhouse (surprising casting actually)
Carole Bouquet as Margaux Castevet
Jason Isaacs as Roman Castevet

I have only watched the first part and is looking forward to watching the second part tonite.

Devil (2010) Addendum.

Reviewed this in 2010 (My Original Review)

It is suppose to be the first part of a trilogy, nickname The Night Chronicles.

I still like this movie and wish that M. Night Shyamalan would stop dicking around and get the 2nd and 3rd The Night Chronicles done!!

Part two was supposed to be filmed in 2011, and the latest news is it is starting filming in 2013 (Reincarnation, written by him not directed, like Devil).

Now it seems he is working on Sundowning (2014)....

Frustrating thing is there is actually a website for the trilogy but nothing is updated to date (since 2010)....

Tease.... shakehead.gif

Evidence (2013)

You are gonna hear alot of negative reviews about this movie.

It is pretty low budget and for people who HATES hand cam, please give this a miss. There are plenty of hand cam scenes.

This is a Horror/Gore/Thriller genre.

I kinda sorta figured out the ending and have to say that you either like or hate this movie.

Personally I appreciate the director's approach to the movie, there is a dash if trying too hard, and have to add I still think the approach interesting.

Also interesting to see Stephen Moyer outside of True Blood.

If you like thriller and you don't mind hand cam scenes, give this a try.

This runs rings around movie like Prom Night!!

Deliver Us from Evil (2014)

Just got back from this movie, and I like it!!

It is formulaic, no question.

It is not the most fast paced movie. Just right for character development, and story.

Only famous "star" here is Eric Bana, and have to add, all parts here are well acted by the actor/actress cast!!

Story is supposed to be based on actual case, and I would actually loved to see more adaption of the two leads!!

So, in conclusion, despite the chair kicking, chair shaking, bf & gf regurgitating the plot between themselves and is not shy to let other people hear, and also the modest budget of the movie, I found this movie engaging and interesting.

Oh, another observation, director Scott Derrickson should stick to horror and leave Scifi alone...

A Haunted House 2 (2014)

Okay, chances are, if you are reading this, it means you have either watched A Haunted House (2013) or you are familiar with Marlon Wayans' movies.

This is a comedy/horror that is R Rated.

R Rated not because of the horror elements but because you'll see many sides of Marlon Wayans you never wanted to see....

Movie this movie take the mickey out of are

The Conjuring (2013) (I will NEVER look at Annabella the same way again...)
All the Paranormal Activities

I think too much focus is place on Marlon Wayans...

So if you are a fan of his...

Hungry Ghost Ritual 盂蘭神功 (2014)

Nick Cheung directorial debut and... he chose a ghost story??

First Simon Yap now him?...

Do they really think that horror movies are easy to make??

The interesting thing was it was actually filmed in Malaysia (Why do Hong Kies thinks that Malaysia's spooky??). The thing that shocked me most was... seeing a Proton Waja in one of the scenes!! laugh.gif

Movie revolves around an Cantonese Opera Troupe.

There is a twist at the end, and I think there lies the issue...

Nick Cheung in his directorial debut, tried to pull an M Knight Shamalyan!!!

Did not quite work.. At least not to me.

I do have to add, that the very last frame of the movie is actually... poetic!!

Not the best horror movie by far, Nick Cheung needs to attend film school.... tongue.gif

I'm mean, I know.

I'm not a horror movie fan per se, but I love watching corny slashers (e.g. Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer. Texas Chainsaw Massacre, bla bla bla.. you get the idea).. Unfortunately for me there hasn't been any good slashers so far in 2014, unless I missed something that you guys managed to catch?
*
Slashers have fallen out of favour of late... In my opinion, Deliver Me From Evil is one of the best horror (things that bump in the night type horror) this year.
