Sinister (2012)

Long time...

Managed to squeeze in Sinister yesterday. Sinister is... interesting.

Firstly let's talk about Ethan Hawke. He has not been in anything substantial since Daydreak!!

Credit where credit is due. The sound engineers know what they are doing. Fantastic soundscape!!! Crystal clear, atmospheric and is the spookiest aspect of the movie.

By Hollywood standards, this is not an expensive movie to make! USD 3M. And like Paranormal Activity and Sinister, it grounds the movie, making is seems more... I don't know, real!!

Spooky movie

Every time Ethan loads a new film reel, in the 8mm projector....

First two acts were good and then the ending.... loses me....

If you like Paranormal Activity and Insidious, give this a go

If you can find a cinema that is not full, so much the better!!

The Cabin in the Woods (2011)

Ah, Joss Whedon, good old Joss Whedon. It has been a good year for him!!

First he directed The Avengers and he also wrote this!!

He had actually did something almost impossible.

He made the horror movie genre, interesting again.

He basically took all forms of horror movies (slashers, gory, ghost) broke in down into it's basic component, and wrote this little movie from grounds up!!

It starts out like a typical, I Know What You Did Last Summer and ended it... well, I'm getting ahead of my self.

Joss Whedon has also got something that is almost unheard of, he is loyal.

If you see his works (TV mainly), he use alot of actor that he has fun working with

Fran Kranz (Dollhouse), Tom Lenk (buffy the Vampire Slayer), Amy Acker (Angel) all appears in this. Not many Writer/Director can claim that!! Not now anyway.

I really don't want to spoil this for you.

If you like horror, no matter which genre watch this.

You won't regret it

Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)

Watched this a couple of weeks back

To be very frank with you, I had to load IMDB up to remember the name of this movie.

And there in lies the problem.

There is ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY NO POINT to the movie.

Apart from Milla Jovovich in very VERY flattering outfits and shooting guns.

And some of the action sequence were impressive.

Am I complaining, no, but would it be too much to ask for a point to a movie. Please with sugar on it.

I don't want to be deprive of Milla Jovovich in very VERY flattering outfits.

Please, a point to a movie!!

I love watching Horror movies, but they should be classy and interesting, instead of just killing and eating people.

Just watched Sinister few days ago. Not bad, first half was quite scary but when they showed all those ghost kid running around the house kinda make it loose that scary atmosphere.
6/10.

Also the main character being a writer kinda reminded me of The Shining biggrin.gif

Anyway a while back I watched Rosemary's Baby on Astro. That movie is legit scary. Highly recommend it.

Can you guys recommend me any other good old horror movies like The Shining and Rosemary's Baby?
*
Was there any cut/censor done to the Rosemary Baby mvie.

You cannot full enjoy/appreciate it if it was.

You are correct

It is one of the movie "troubling" horror movie I've seen (especially alone in an apartment tongue.gif)

I'm glad that this thread is getting a little of traction.

Keep you the good work guys and gals!!

Just watched Drag Me To Hell. One of those movies which I berated upon its release but oh man how I've come to love it now. Fantastic rewatchability value too. Choke full of gross-out gags with great special effects.

Hark!

Could it be?

Did Quickfire REALLY watched Drag me To Hell and... LIKED IT!!!?!

Impossible!!! No????! biggrin.gif

This thread is in a slum....

Aw..., surely you guys have watched some stuff recently.

Comelah, come, come.... tongue.gif

The Apparition (2012)

There is nothing outstanding about this movie.

As a matter of fact, I could have predicted every single scare around the corner...

This movie reminds be of Pulse

Run of the mill horror movie...

Watch it, if it's on the TV and you are too lazy to change the channel.... sad.gif

The Possession (2012)

Whilst watching this movie, I kept going, where have I seen this guy before, where have I seen this guys before (lead actor, Jeffrey Dean Morgan).

Today, it DAWNED on me that he played Dean and Sam's father in Supernatural.... tongue.gif (old already)

There are some really good actors here, as stated above, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Kyra Sedgwick, Matisyahu and the little girl, Madison Davenport was actually quite convincing!

When it started, I thought is was going to be like Hellraiser (the rubic cube thingie) because the evil object here is a wooden box, which doesn't have any opening seams...

Hannah (Madison Davenport) parents are divorced and she and her sister stays with their father during the weekends...

Their father had moved out of their house and had just recently purchased his own house.

He does not have much furniture of house hold items, so as they passed a yard sale, they stop to browse....

He bought some kitchen stuff (plates, bowls dishes etc) and his youngest daughter, Hannah was attracted by this old antique wooden box

He bought her the box, and the little girl got strangely attached to the box...

There are some scenes in this one that made me jump...

I just wish the ending...

I'm getting ahead of myself...

Check it out why don't you.

I think Japanese horror such as Ju-On are much more scarier because of the silence, no dramatic music or anything. It give you that eerie and uneasy presence. Like everything is too quiet.

House at the End of the Street (2012)

It is interesting to see Jennifer Lawrence outside of Hunger Games. Also Max Thieriot, whom I first notice in The Pacifier. He had since made some... interesting roles, first in undecipherable My Soul To Take and now this.

Not sure if he is trying to pull an Anthony Perkins, and have to add his choices have not been "conventional". Have to add that I am not suggesting that he does conventional.

This is a "different" movie.

It has been advertise as A and it turned out to be B...

Not sure if that help this movie in the box office (let me do a quick check). It did, it made money.

A lot of the movie depended on the young shoulder of Max Thieriot, I know he had been brave with his role selection, but am not quite sure he pulled it off here...

So to reiterate, story is decent, advertising is wrong, and delivery is average so...

A few scares and surprises, but at more skilled hands (directors and actors) could have been GREAT!!

A Haunted House (2013)

It has been quite sometime since the Wayans had done any low brow comedies.

The last one I can remember, Marlon Wayans in was Little Man...

This movie makes fun of all the paranormal movies and then some...

I've notice Marlon Wayans likes to make fun of homosexuals and have to add, this movie takes THAT to a whole new level... laugh.gif

For a low brow comedy, there are actually some spooky bits in this one...

If you like the first two Scary Movies, White Chicks and Little Man, chances are you will find this enjoyable...

As always...

I would like to know too...

Some horror movies appeared to be disgusting movies to me...they are showing the fresh, bones...etc...I personally thought those are disgusting but not scary  blink.gif
Some started with very slow pace and then always input a sudden shock with loud sound that can be easily predicted...which I found very boring and sleepy for a horror movie...

Mama (2013)

Let's cut to the chase, this is a horror movie, so, is it scary??

The answer is, with the right setup, YES!!!

If you had watched this is a good cinema, or you have a good home theater, this movie can be very frightening!!

It is how the movie design.

There are a lot of image and sound the is very subtle and if you have a really bad copy, these nuances will be missed and hence the lack of enjoyment (fright!)

The best I can describe this is, anything that Guillermo del Toro is involve in would be DARK!!

Don't get me wrong, I don't think that he is the Prince of Darkness per say...

I believe his motives are more towards, if he (Guillermo del Toro) does not show us what is dark, how can we appreciate the light!

At least that is my take.

Creepy movie evolves around two very young children, and surprisingly with Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (of Games of Throne fame) who is NOT the focus of the movie.

Guillermo del Toro likes his women and likes them to be strong, tough and independent (maybe, what he wishes his daughters to be??)

I think this takes the award for the scariest movie of 2013, so far.

We still have Insidious 2 to go so...

For people who likes horror movies, please consider.

Watched quite a number of less popular zombie flicks last month. Here's my personal take on them:

Exit Humanity - Pretty darn good
Cockneys vs Zombies - So so
The Dead - Pretty darn good
Redneck Zombies - Trash
Undead Or Alive (comedy) - Trash
Dance Of The Dead - So so
A Little Bit Zombie (comedy) - Pretty darn good
The Dead Next Door - So so
Rise Of The Zombies - So so
