Ryan Reynolds Gets Buried

Ryan Reynolds (The Proposal, X-Men Origins: Wolverine) will star in Buried, playing a civilian contractor who's kidnapped in Iraq and awakens buried in a coffin in the desert, armed only with a cell phone, a candle and a knife.

Rodrigo Cortes will direct a script by Chris Sparling; production will begin this month in Barcelona.

Peter Safran will produce through his Safran Co. with Adrian Guerra of Spain-based Versus Entertainment, which is financing the film. The picture will shoot entirely in Spain, which is home to Cortes.

Basic storyline sounds cool.
Abit Macguyver-ish, but I expect it to be action-packed survival movie just like Behind Enemy Lines (2001) biggrin.gif
Good way to boost Ryan's exposure as a Hollywood action star since Origin.

nope, no knife guys. its just a man in a coffin with a lighther and a cell phone: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1462758/

Paul is a U.S. contractor working in Iraq. After an attack by a group of Iraqis he wakes to find he is buried alive inside a coffin. With only a lighter and a cell phone it's a race against time to escape this claustrophobic death trap.

QUOTE
Sundance describes the 94-minute film as follows:

Paul Conroy (Ryan Reynolds) is a U.S. citizen working as a contract driver in Iraq. After a swift and sudden attack on his convoy, he awakens to find himself buried alive inside a coffin with nothing more than a lighter, a cell phone, and little memory of how he ended up there. Faced with limited oxygen and unlimited panic, Paul finds himself in a tension-filled race against time to escape this claustrophobic deathtrap before it’s too late. If the sheer logistics of this premise are enough to make your head hurt, rest assured that director Rodrigo Cortés tackles these issues with relative ease, aided a great deal by a superbly convincing performance by Reynolds, the lone onscreen actor in the film. The result is a gripping and suspenseful thriller that will leave you gasping for air until the very end.

Apparently Paul is in a “death race against time” and only has 90 minutes to escape before he runs out of oxygen.

Rodrigo Cortes‘ Buried will premiere at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival in the Park City at Midnight category, one of eight films selected from over 3724 titles from all over the world.

looking foward to this movie. quite many people said that the script for this movie was good. the script even got leaked. ill attach the full script. have a read at it if you're free.
and here we have a review of the script if you plan to skip the full script: http://scriptshadow.blogspot.com/2009/06/buried.html

so guys, what would you start to do if you found yourself in that situation ?

1st, panic, sweating the hell out
2nd, find out why im in a coffin.
3rd, what else is in the coffin. yes, im not alone. lol
4th ...

kind enough to help me continue ? i think i know whats coming after i ran out of oxygen. Death!

intresting isnt it, no ?
you'll never know. so many crazy things happening in the world today.
but as for the movie, we'll just have to wait and see why the person chose to do so by burying a man with a lighther and a cell phone.

Well Mythbusters proved that you can't punch your way out of a coffin so perhaps this could improve on that.

i've just gone thru the script. just had to say, wow. a simple yet engaging plot but the level of desperation and fear of buried alive is just unimaginable. it's kinda like Phone Booth, but more terrifying.

They should have gotten Pai Mei inside the coffin and make a bet if he can get out of it. If he wins, the Mythbuster Team will loose their eye balls to him..
If he loses, just bury him inside the coffin...haha..with a bowl of poison fish head soup courtesy of Elle Driver..

I have read the script and I assure you guys that the whole movie will be in the coffin for 90 minutes straight. NO FLASHBACKS, NO CUTS TO OTHER PEOPLE. JUST RYAN REYNOLDS IN A COFFIN FOR 90 MINUTES.

Seen it during the weekends as its now showing in Australian cineplexes. Got to say that its a fantastically unique way of projecting a movie. I can safely assure you that its purely 90 minutes of Ryan Reynolds, a handphone, lighter and other thingamajingies in a coffin. Enjoyed the movie very much.

No way! For real?! We see him struggling all along for 90 minutes??!! By the way, definitely seem like a contender for a hit. Add : "sleeper" hit.
Seems no one really has heard about this movie in my opinion.

Edit : Wow... 86% on RT drool.gif

Just watched Buried special screening at Cineleisure just now.

Yes ,the whole movie is just in the coffin.Thats 90 mins to be exact.

How is the movie? For me,i feel it is one of the worst movie this year.

After i came out from the hall,i felt like wanna vomit and felt like I am buried 6 feet under.

Luckily it was free,so dint bother too much.

But damn was it a boring movie. Not worth watching at all

Ohyea,this movie has no flashbacks,no replays,no nothing.

All it has is RR in a wooden coffin with a lighter,a torchlight, phone, some light sticks,a can of alcohol,a pencil for 90 mins! Thats about it.Ohyea and another something, but this I shall let you guys watch to find out what it is.

Bet nobody can guess what it is.hahahaha..

4/10 for me.

At least Phone Booth and Panic Room has something going on in their surroundings. If this movie only focuses the inside of the coffin and nothing else then I couldn't imagine whats it gonna be like watching it.

The movie is amazing as hell. Ryan Reynolds pulled off one of his best performance ever and I wish he would get a nomination for some award (at least a Golden Globe?). Cinematography is excellent, it was able to capture the audience's mind because without a good cinematography, I'm pretty sure most of us would get bored quick. Last 10 minutes was intense as ****.

Good movie. I give 4/5 for the suspend it bring to the audience. I feel like also buried in the coffin while watching this movie. US gov bureaucracy is highlighted in this movie.

I thought it was a reasonably good film. Its strength lies in its conceit and concept of filming a man trapped in a buried coffin and showing nothing else, and it is executed adequately enough, but the material isn't enough to cover 90 minutes, and I think the director knows this, as evidenced by showing the torchlight repeatedly going on and off, chewing off a few seconds each time it happens. I dont think beyond its spine-tingling and chilling premise, that the movies displays a lot of craft- it's mostly just phone calls, I really dont know how much you can do showing only a man stuck ina coffin for 90 mins, and I'm not going to heap praise on Reynolds, who does an alright job but could have easily been replaced by someone relatively unknown and the movie would have still remained just as effective. But for all it's worth I found it to be a good suspense movie, unique in its premise but also slightly restricted because of it.

It takes a lot of balls to make an entire film in an enclosed place using one actor for over an hour. Not many can do it, but Cortez manages it brilliantly. Not many people can do what he did.

People that go into this film will either love it or hate it. Those that don't 'get it' will hate it but those that do will absolutely love it.

Thumbs up to Reynolds for managing to hold the entire film by himself.

I loved the atmosphere created by the film giving Buried a distinctive interactive feel with the character's situation.

I loved the issues that were raised: dwindling corporate responsibility, war in Iraq, the dangers of the average working American in Iraq trying to make a living

And I f***ing loved the ending

Definately one of my top films of 2010

Ryan Reynolds is on the road to the Oscars people!!

Ryan Reynolds got the praise because he is able to handle the entire weight of the movie by himself. Yes, any decent actor (but i doubt so imo) can pull it off but he's the one that actually gotten the role so we are unable to compare his role with any other actors.

This is a brilliant movie , it just shows how desperate and the mental strength to survive in the coffin.

Anyway , is there any alternative ending for this movie ala paranormal activity and 1.4.0.8? Seems possible rclxms.gif

The spectrum of acting on display is as narrow and limited as his physical movements. The only acting we see is him panicking, and most of it is done through tone of voice, and this, pretty much any decent actor can do. Reynolds did a good enough job, but I'm saying this role wasn't hard from an acting standpoint. Being trapped in a confined space like that is another matter.

What is the budget for the movie? I bet most of it went to Reynolds. Discounting his payoff, I think the movie could have easily been made with $50,000 or less.

You're not really looking in depth with his character that he's playing. All you notice is just physical but you've forgotten about Conroy's personality which was really subtle due to majority of the screentime is him doing some physical acting. And you like saying his role wasn't hard, please list some actors from his generation that can play Paul Conroy perfectly like him.

I disagree. The character isn't subtle. It's pure and raw emotions, namely fear, anger, frustration, and finally resignation. Reynolds was in no way irreplaceable, not even close. It is very easy for me to imagine Joseph Gorden-Levitt playing Paul Conroy. Probably would have done a better job. When you can think of another actor who could have done an equally good or probably better job, I wont be lavishing much praise on the actor who actually got the part. I'm gonna head home now, so I cant think of any other actors.

hmm.gif Ryan Gosling or Jeremy Renner.I think they will give a more convincing and intense emotions.

Whereas Ryan Reynolds still has that hollywood packaged lead actor persona. But then again "starpower" is needed to get this movie notice.

...I so want to watch this! The premise is absolutely amazing. I'll watch it eventually... I thought there would be some kind of flashbacks or subtitles explaining what is happening but no... brave brave movie makers with a "micro budget". IGN Movie Reviews gave this a "unicorn rare" 10/10.

guys, i certainly din enjoy the experience, i mean i truly love Cloverfield, but this is just an entirely different level, the whole movie was too claustrophobic and i cant help but think the makers of the film was trying to cut cost however possible, and the ending was.... meh!

I'm not so sure about Renner, as he wasn't exactly sympathetic in all the roles I've seen him in, but Ryan Gosling is an easy fit in my mind.

The movie itself isn't so much cost-cutting as it is uncompromising.

I hated this movie. WTF whole 80 mins see one guy talking over the phone in a coffin??

Seriously I think the production cost for this movie is less than 100,000 USD. No special effects, no other person to see except that joker....

The subject matter isn't new to me.

I believe in CSI Season 5, Episode 24: Grave Danger: Volume 1 & Episode 25: Grave Danger: Volume 2, the episodes directed by Quentin Tarantino they dealt with te same subject matter.

And then again in Kill Bill Vol 2, also directed by Quentin Tarantino.

So not really motivated to go watch it in the cinema...

Okay.

I'm afraid the there really isn't much original idea's left.

Most movies you see nowadays are variation of the same theme, and with added complexities.

Complexities can be

1) Making the movie variations of many themes (case in point, Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's From Dusk Till Dawn and lump together a high tension escape convict movie, which a high tension vampire movie and Inception taking the world of matrix into multi layer plane etc)

2) More mind boggling effects

Just my opinion.

I never said I would never watch Buried, I will probably watch it when it comes out in HD. (Low in FUNDS sad.gif )

For the record, I rarely watch war movie.

I don't believe in it.

Don't stop war from happening, I just don't believe in it...

that makes no sense.

People are complaining this movie doesn't have any special effects? I thought the special effect of the fire in the coffin was very realistic. And the finger cutting part...

On a serious note, pretty good movie. Nice to see something else in the cinema besides comedy/love/action movies.

Just watched this movie in Alamanda Putrajaya RM 7. I absolutely lapped up every minute of it

Been following RR since his sitcom "2 Guys a Girl and a Pizza Place" days. He is indeed one of my favourite actors hence my choice to watch this movie

this is a type of movie where you either grow to love or hate as the movie develops or grow to hate. Being the single actor in the movie reminded me of another movie, I am Legend. unlike that movie where Will actually moves around. Ryan is actually stuck in the coffin for the entire 90 mins. No doubt there could have been other actors that might have pulled this movie off but RR's depiction of the Paul Conroy character dovetailed perfectly with plot and ive seen worse from RR before namely XMen and Blade.

Ending was abit hollow but i enjoyed the entire experience.

7.5/10 for me biggrin.gif

Ending was abit hollow but i enjoyed the entire experience.

7.5/10 for me biggrin.gif

For me, being Deadpool was the best thing i've ever seen Ryan do in his whole career. haha. Typically suits the merc with the mouth.

Just watch it last week, did not have high expectation, knowing that the whole movie you just see one guy in a coffin.
At the end to me it was a great movies with good plot and story telling. It keep the momentum going and never a dull moment except the beginning when RR struggling to light up the lighter.

I'll give it 8/10.

I watched it 24 hours ago and personally, I like it. It was worth my 94 minutes as (1) Its claustrophobic effect is so capturing that I did even have time to think of Uma Thurman (Kill Bill) at all and (2) I paid only RM5 for it.

I, for one, thought the movie was beautifully done.

Hi, long time lurker and first time posting here.

Personally, I think how someone would perceive this movie depends on what he or she knows about it before entering the theatre. It's important to know that yes, Ryan Reynolds is the only person you'll see on screen for the entire length of the running time. Yes, the entire movie takes place within the coffin he was buried in and all other characters in this film are just voices on his cellphone.

If you're curious how a film like this got made and why it's such a critical darling, you should probably check it out. If you don't think you can stare at closeups of Ryan Reynold's sweaty face contorting for an hour and a half, this is probably not for you. If you aren't capable of paying attention to dialogues to tease the story out from a movie, or if you do not like seeing something radically different projected on the big screen for once - give Buried a pass. I thought it's one of the best films of the year. And I certainly hope it does well enough in theatres that more movies like this make it to Malaysia.

Here's a decent spoiler-free review of Buried which tells you everything you need to know about the film before seeing it. The author also riffed a bit on the crappy crowd he saw Buried with and how they almost ruined the experience for him.

A Positive Malaysian Review of Buried

P.S. The best special effects are those you don't even know are there at all thumbup.gif

Malaysian public movie goers list an average score of 2/5 or for Buried based on Yahoo Movies Malaysia.

While on IMDb, the average score based on the International public movie goer is 7.8/10 and on Metacritic is 8.0/10.

Why is there such a huge difference?? :S

Because Malaysians don't like watching a single shot movie?

Its a guy getting stuck in a coffin for 94 minutes. Its not a movie, its bullshit.

To them at least.

Because Malaysians don't know how to watch a movie. They're too busy talking amongst themselves, talking on the phones, texting, offer live commentary whether other audiences like it or not, treating the theater like a coffee shop or a playground, letting their kids running around, than actually trying to understand the plot of a film. I hate to say it, but it was the rudest and least considerate audiences I've ever encounter. The only reason I didn't get bothered when I watch Buried at a theater here is because I have to pick a late night showing on a Sunday at a theater at a crime-infested area ON PURPOSE just to make sure not a lot of audiences would show up. Yeah, basically I have to risk my life to make sure I have a half decent theater viewing experience. LOL. Even then, there was still a couple there talking thru out although they're just whispering so I just thank God it could have been way worse.

I don't get it, if you like talking so much, why not talk somewhere else. You don't have to pay 9 bucks for it...

The Malaysians who dislike this film are probably the same folks here in this thread who liked the execrable Phua Chu Kang film. Every single one of my friends in college hated Buried with a passion. I got a friend who wanted to see it but couldn't get anyone to go with him because word of mouth got so terribly toxic.

I guess the disconnect between Malaysian filmgoers and filmgoers worldwide is due to the fact that Malaysians aren't used to researching films before watching them. I still think the main reason why Buried bombed here in Malaysia is because hardly anyone expected the film to take place entirely in the coffin, featuring only one actor and when they realise that midway through the film, they get whiny. The alternative explanation is that Malaysians are just tasteless, gormless yokels - that I can easily believe too. tongue.gif

And I concur with the above poster. Malaysian audiences are also real douchebags in theatres. In almost every screening I attended, I had to tell people around me to shut the f*** up mad.gif

That is an ugly truth about local's attitude in cinema. They're just not bothered about others. Thank God the audience that I shared the hall with, for this movie was close to professionals, except for the ending of the movie when someone said "dah habis? ape cerite ni?". Haha...

LOL. I think another problem, is that people are way too interested with the ending. They don't care about story, script, that stuff. They just want to get to ending and be done with it.

So, screw u for being dissapointed the ending didn't go ur way. I loved it.

Try reading some of the user reviews on Yahoo Movie Malaysia laugh.gif

Yeah, I know that the 'respect other peoples opinion' applies but not when that opinion is full of invalid criticism! One of the main criticism from Malaysians would be: The whole movie set in a box with one guy for 1 hour, waste of time and money.

That's the point, the director wants to bring the audience into the film itself, to feel the meaning of despair and hopelessness. He wants the audience to interact with the character. Bringing the camera away from the confines of the coffin ruins the purpose of the film. I really don't get why Malaysians are so harsh on the film...

And yeah, I agree with you when you say that Malaysians don't research a film before going into it. They just see Ryan Reynolds and assume that its gonna be an action thriller sweat.gif

Our taste in movies is really bad. Go to boxofficemojo.com and search for Malaysian box office. Our taste is so bad that Resident Evil is the highest grossing film this year (or is it Avatar:TLA?) and is more successful than Inception.

Its the same in the US. Twilight Eclipse beat Inception at the box office too.. In Malaysia, Toy Story 3 has the most takings so far but yeah, Malaysians spammed the cinemas spending money on shit like Clash of the Titans (worse movie of the year) and The Last Airbender (never seen it and never will). Basically, films like Prince of Persia, Resident Evil, Clash of the Titans, The Last Airbender and Twilight beat Inception at the Malaysian box office.

Its not really surprising though. Teenagers rule the box office these days and they don't really have a good head in knowing which films are good and which are crap. Throw a few explosions and humongous special effects and they all come out of the cinema proclaiming: best film of the year!

I know because I was a dumb ignorant immature teen myself smile.gif

Back on Buried, I was quite surprised by the commercial value of Buried in Malaysia. $190,000. Not that bad really. In the US itself, it got $986,000. Amazingly, in Turkey it made more than 2 million! Wow, Turkish people have more taste in movies than us Malaysians tongue.gif

Nah, i don't think its taste. Its more to Perception.

U wanna know why Inception didn't rule Malaysia? It was too much to take for the average Malaysian. They don't want movies that make them think, teach them values. Just give them something pompom powpow and ur a winner.

Which is why Drama's never worked, and Malay films that get released are horror, crap action, comedy, love stories. When was the last time you watched a drama from Malaysia?

For example, Muallaf. The reason it was banned in Malaysia (previously) was because it was too "wordy and unappealing". F*CK that. Thank God it was shown in the end.

The funniest thing I've seen is that the audiences CAN'T wait to make some noise if they figure out ONE plotpoint, as if they won a prize or something, like they're the smartest person on the room. Oh yeah, you finally figure out that one thing called PLOT DEVELOPMENT that an average moviegoer should have known, good for you. You want a cookie or something? This applies to almost every film I seen at a theater here, well, except Inception of course... 'cause when I walked out of the Inception's showing, I overheard something like "What is the totem for?" and "Saito is Leo's father, right?" "Why did the van fall in the water?" It dawn on me people here don't go to movies to understand stories etc... They go to movies to see pretty images running thru the screen while letting the background music/noise playing over it. No wonder everyone is talking in the theater... because it really doesn't matter what the dialogue or narration is... Plain and simple, They don't respect art and films. More importantly, they don't respect their own intelligence.

Alright just watched it. I didn't make it to the cinemas, but this is... definitely one of the best movies of the year. Absolutely stunning. Just imagine if you're inside. I mean, wow. I am absolutely shocked (and apalled) to hear folks saying this movie is a waste of time, want my money back, boring (???)... I mean, what the heck is wrong with this movie? Nothing.

Fantastic. And so my Top 5 best movies of 2010 is completed.

Brilliant, brilliant movie making. I don't think any actor out there could have done a better job than Ryan Reynolds. Not much of a "great performance" from him you say? I think not. He had that belivability for the film's entire length. Bravo.

9.5/10

There could not have been a better ending than how it actually ended. It is one of the best movie ending's ever.

The last few moments of the movie is a testament to the entire movie's daringness. It could have been a "movie usual" ending but damn, this is incredible. Totally edge of your seat experience.

Also just watched it a few days ago. Glad I didn't missed it. Its been a while since I last cared for a character.
You can really feel for the character. The last few minutes was just so intense and then WHAM it hits you like that with a shocker. I was like "WTF MAN NOO!" when the guy on the phone said "I'm so sorry."
Feels good to finally see a good movie without the usual endings.
Theres a scene after the credits where the camera focuses on the word "Mark White" which was written by Paul in the coffin. I'm not sure whether its supposed to send out some hint or message but yea.

I guess I'm lucky not to have watched it in the cinema otherwise it might have been spoilt by those who keeps complaining.

Frankly, I can still remember how horrific it felt to be in the cinema. Not only was it so dark but it was so damn creepy. I really felt I was in the coffin!

I couldn't grasp myself for a while and it took quite a whole lot from me to just get back to feeling ok the same day I finished watching it.

You can call me a little b**** all you want but you have to admit we have bad taste in movies. All we want in a movie is flashy explosions and action and cheesy romance. If the movie's too deep, we'll go "OH NO!! TOO MUCH THINKING!! NO THANK YOU!". The local film producers should know better. If they would want to improve their reputation, they shouldn't churn out crap after crap of locally made movies.

And aren't you a hypocrite for calling us out on our opinions of the film?

i think this movie quite cool , is a rare method that film maker trying to make a film , and it works
i kinda appreciate the effort by the director to make something unique , im pretty sure its not easy to make a film interesting just in a coffin all the time , that why alot effort , trial and error to make this film

The final scene was just surreal.

When the movie ended, I was in pensive mode. I can only imagine what went through Paul Conroy’s head on his last breath.

have yet to watch this. I was interested at first, then I heard it's kinda like 127 hours, lose interest..

I've watched both and they're nothing alike. 127 Hours was slow and boring. The whole movie was kinda calm and you don't really feel the rush to save the guy until he starts cutting his arm.
