Yeah. I hope he turns out to be another Larsson. Few people realise this but there are some facts to consider:-
1) He is free.
2) The contract is a pay as you play. Don't play? No Pay.
3) Owen is a short term measure.
a) This will allow SAF more time to evaluate Macheda and Welbeck. If they're good, promote. If not good, sell off and buy expensive replacement.
b) The market has already been distorted by Real Madrid. This will allow Man Utd to wait till later to buy players, after the prices have stabilised.
I think the key problems will be:-
1) Motivation - He hasn't been motivated since he left Madrid, where he was still almost a goal a game. I hope competing for the BPL trophy will help motivate him again.
2) Fitness - This is the biggest worry since it is something we cannot control. But I think training alongside Giggs, who has managed to conquer his own hamstring problems, will allow Owen to learn a thing or two about protecting himself from injuries. They are similar in that both used to depend a lot on acceleration. As they age, the most common issues will be hamstring problems.
It would be interesting to see how Owen picks up the pieces of his career, if he really does end up with Man Utd. He will be expected to play at a very competitive level eventhough he is no longer as fast as he used to be and he lacks physical presence. So now, more than ever, he will be dependant on his football brain and his technique.
The looming World Cup should provide enuff motivation for him to perform. Heskey has pipped him on the pecking order and he'll definitely want to do something bout that, especially to show that he can form a deadly partnership with Rooney. His only obstacle would be trying to stay fit. Still, even if he does get crocked, we won't be losing much in terms of wages + we can rely on the kids. I'm sure Fergie has his reasons for the move. At the beginning I was pretty sceptical, but after reading up on how the deal will be structured, we wouldn't be taking too much of a risk with Michael. Might grab a handful of important goals a la Larsson.1) He is free.
