Yeah. I hope he turns out to be another Larsson. Few people realise this but there are some facts to consider:-

1) He is free.
2) The contract is a pay as you play. Don't play? No Pay.
3) Owen is a short term measure.
    a) This will allow SAF more time to evaluate Macheda and Welbeck. If they're good, promote. If not good, sell off and buy expensive replacement.
    b) The market has already been distorted by Real Madrid. This will allow Man Utd to wait till later to buy players, after the prices have stabilised.
I think the key problems will be:-
1) Motivation - He hasn't been motivated since he left Madrid, where he was still almost a goal a game. I hope competing for the BPL trophy will help motivate him again.

2) Fitness - This is the biggest worry since it is something we cannot control. But I think training alongside Giggs, who has managed to conquer his own hamstring problems, will allow Owen to learn a thing or two about protecting himself from injuries. They are similar in that both used to depend a lot on acceleration. As they age, the most common issues will be hamstring problems.

It would be interesting to see how Owen picks up the pieces of his career, if he really does end up with Man Utd. He will be expected to play at a very competitive level eventhough he is no longer as fast as he used to be and he lacks physical presence. So now, more than ever, he will be dependant on his football brain and his technique.
*
The looming World Cup should provide enuff motivation for him to perform. Heskey has pipped him on the pecking order and he'll definitely want to do something bout that, especially to show that he can form a deadly partnership with Rooney. His only obstacle would be trying to stay fit. Still, even if he does get crocked, we won't be losing much in terms of wages + we can rely on the kids. I'm sure Fergie has his reasons for the move. At the beginning I was pretty sceptical, but after reading up on how the deal will be structured, we wouldn't be taking too much of a risk with Michael. Might grab a handful of important goals a la Larsson.

Okay. We got Owen for peanuts, who next?

Don't see the need to get anyone else. We've replaced the players we lost with those in similar positions. I'd rather see the wad of cash used to reduce our debt.

Mass suicide by the muppets who wished for Benzema, Ribery, Villa etc. but got Owen instead.

You reckon this is true? This forum is saying that Liverpool is set to sign David Silva for £28mil. Apparently, it's the same guy who posted about the Johnson deal in the middle of May and he turns out to be right. He gives hint with pictures though so you might need to read the whole thing to get it.

QUOTE(nando @ Jul 6 2009, 12:05 PM)
I think its safe to say that if fitness is not a problem and SAF gives him a long enough run (to rebuild that goal scoring consistency) Owen will give goals.  I observed him closely for many years.  He is not as natural as Fowler when it comes to scoring. Nor is his positioning as lethal as the legendary Rush.  And he is not as exciting as Torres.  But MO is miles ahead of many other strikers in England.  So he will bring goals
*
Agreed. People seem to forget that Owen is here only to play a bit part role. He won't be expected to play 50+ games a season. He'll prob start the occasional cup games and a few league ones, but most of his appearances would be off the bench, where he was effective during his Madrid days. He's a former Ballon D'Or player, so ability is something he has loads off obviously. A few inspired substitution appearances and a few goals here and there would justify his acquisition. Even if he does get crocked, we would just switch to one of the kids. The thing about Owen is that he's often been rushed back to play during his Newcastle and England days. Yeah, I'm sure we all still remember that moment where he suddenly fell on his backside due to some unseen force and got himself injured after just, what, 4-5 minutes? People questioned Ferguson when he bought Sheringham who was then on the wrong side of 30, and look what he did. He led our fledgings with his experience and helped us win the treble.

Didn't Yaya just sign a new contract recently? Don't see why we need another midfield enforcer when Hargo is due to be back come October (was it?). And I hope we don't sign Eto'o. We don't need another striker, especially one who's main motivation is money and would walk out the moment he feels as though the away fans are giving him stick. Just kung fu kick them a la The King pls. I don't want anymore strikers. I want Rooney to play in the hole. Thats all.

QUOTE(Duke Red @ Jul 8 2009, 09:25 AM)
You'll soon get over Owen being a former Liverpool player so long as he remains healthy and scores goals. Matt Busby played over 100 games for Liverpool but is revered in Manchester. We never really liked Paul Ince but then I don't remember him receiving too much stick for being a former manc. All will be forgotten when Owen bags a hattrick and starts kissing his badge. A change of perception is easy when it's forced upon us. Can't say I didn't celebrate when Ince scored much as I think he's a ****. In the end the club comes first eh?
*
Whether it turns out to be masterstroke or a "I told you so" moment is yet to be seen. I admit I wasn't too keen on seeing Owen joining us on a free, especially since he's been repeatedly linked with us during his Newcastle days. Partly becoz of his knack of falling into pieces, and partly becoz he's a former Pool player. Some fans have been very receptive to the signing, but there are those who are pissed off at Fergie's decision. For me, well, I've gone thru so many years under the gaffer to know that whatever he does is for the good of the club and I welcome whatever decision he wishes to take. If I were to put myself in Owen's shoes I prob wouldn't have taken that step, but then at times we're forced to put professional reasons before loyalty. Besides, if I recall correctly, he was always the country over club man.

No one wants an Owen shirt

It's lucky for Michael Owen that Sir Alex Ferguson rates him, because Manchester United supporters certainly do not. Since he signed on Friday, the club shop has yet to receive a single request for an Owen shirt.

This evidences just how widely the dissatisfaction with his purchase is felt; very few supporters feel that he is good enough to play for the team, and just as many are resentful of having an ex-Liverpool player in the squad.

An employee at United's megastore commented that:

"We haven't got his number yet, which might have had an effect, [but] we are not expecting a big demand even when that is known. As far as I know, no one has asked for [it]".

3 million? What a steal if the figures are true. Could be the new Henry, you'll never know.

Well Ronaldo didn't really come as cheap, and we paid bucketloads for Nani and Anderson. Especially in this current transfer market where we're talking about tens of millions this one would probably fly under the radar.

Ronaldo: Fergie to thank for stalling my ego
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

After reading this you just can't not give him your blessings and wish him all the best at Madrid. Very unlike that Tevez. Moan before leaving, moan after leaving, and now expect us to not view him as a traitor once he joins City. Yeah, it'd be stupid to view him as one but the respect is no longer there. Kia's puppet.
*
Weird isn't it? Ppl point to Ronaldo as being the ungrateful and selfish twat that he is for leaving us for the sunny skies of Madrid and regard Tevez as a "United player thru and thru." Yet, what we've seen from them both has been the contrary. Ronaldo has gone up a bit in my estimation since leaving (yes, I'm still gutted that he's chosen to left us before Ferguson called it a day). Tevez on the other hand, well, I thank him for the important contributions and all, but talking shite and harping all day about the negatives rather than the positives of his United days is irritating me, and theres no better place for him then to play for the Bitters. Like a knife struck thru my heart that, especially since fans were singing his praises just months ago.

who is the people u refering to actually... for me and i believe many more united fan we dont think ronaldo being ungrateful or selfish
it just he could handle the transfer story more profesional.. telling everyone his dream to play for RM when he still united player and after all united n SAF hv done to him, telling he wanted to move then wanted to stay la.. ron actually admit he could handle this better.

most people i think only sad and little afraid that maybe led to angry to some people. thinking how important ronaldo to united.. it such a loss
ronaldo wants a new challange in RM and united got 80mil for that. so for me its good biz.. wont be good keeping player who wanted to leave so bad

he wont be the king, even our prince maybe not even united legend but he definately one of the best maybe the best player united ever had!!
thank u for all his contribution  notworthy.gif  not all the best to u but good luck  tongue.gif

You need to lurk around the United forums more often. Lots of ppl have never forgiven Ronaldo for flirting with Madrid the summer before this, taking away the gloss of our double. I understand though that being a boy born in that part of Europe where Real Madrid is pretty much the club everyone dreams of playing for due to their rich history, he couldn't pass away an opportunity to play for them. Congrats to him on getting his wish then.

I don't think I can bring myself to wish him and Madrid well though. The only club I genuinely do hope do well is Manchester United, and I'm not tied down to any player more than I am to my club. However, like many I will be tracking his and their progress, like I did with Beckham who was the first player I ever admired and wanted to be like during my younger days.

Djemba-Djemba who was ROnaldo's best friend when he was here has been quoted as saying that ROnaldo was more of a fan of Barca then he was at Real back then. So I don't really buy all this childhood club bullcrap. Paddy Crerand has also said that ROnaldo was a childhod fan of Benfica. Prety sure that 225k per week he's getting there had nothing to do with it ehh?? What with the possibility of it rising to 550k per week at the end of his contract.

ROnaldo and Madrid are made for each other. 2 circus. DOn't think we would fill half of Old Trafford even if we bring The King back and 80k fans turned up to see him wave and juggle the ball a bit. Like I said, a circus. Our fans would rather turn up for games rather than a flashy presentation. A circus, fits like a glove the both of them. All the better to see them flop.
Wish him well at Madrid?? Feck off, the higlight would see this new set pf Galacticos crash and burn.

Aye, I'll never discount the fact that he left for more money. But that just goes to show that he's human after all. I've always believed that 99% of ppl are somewhat influenced by money. The other 1% are just lying. smile.gif

Amen to that Wan. Well said. We've not really seen a dearth of local talent capable enuff of wearing the United shirt since the days of the fledglings. How many actually go on and become superstars elsewhere anyways? Greening (Champions League winner haha)? Lee Martin? Chris "Oh look what I spent my promotion bonus on" Eagles? Welbeck looks like the most decent player with enuff potential to break into our team in the future, plus Fergie obviously rates him. Was it Fergie who said Welbeck has a serious shot at making it into the World Cup 2010 team?

The issue on Berbatov has been discussed to death. Someone should look up his "distance covered" statistics. He scored some massive goals for us last season, and was very critical in the few games we actually looked like a formidable attacking threat. People claim he's a waste of money, and then go on and rave about Aguero who's gonna cost an additional 20million. Madness.

Isn't there was a point where SAF actually told Rooney not to overdoing his usual running and try to attack more? We have enough workhorses in the team. The likes of Rooney, Park, Fletcher and etc has been doing all the so called "donkey work" and we need someone to make use of it and provide the end products.

I will take "less overall running but more effective runs" instead of "running/covering all over the field but no end products" anytime.
*
It was more about having Rooney conserve his energy and use them in areas of the pitch where he's at his most lethal (final third). He seems to hate losing the ball so much that he'd chase the player who took away his ball all the way back to his goalkeeper. I'm sure the crowd loves things like these, but Fergie has a point. Without Ronaldo, Rooney will be our focal point, and everyone will be looking to find him near the opposition's penalty box.

Might head their via LRT as well. Been awhile since I used the Malaysian public transportation system, so I'm ready to be disappointed yet again smile.gif. Maybe we could meet up together, get a few chants going before we head into the stadium, and when our boys get on the pitch we can start with the singing.
