you will need to restore the phone for the unlocking process to complete.

make sure that you are connected to the net throughout the restoration.

Will try that again.. Thanks!

if you are certain that you are restored your iPhone correctly (from what iTunes tells you).

then "3" hasn't unlocked your unit yet. you will need to call them again.

this is why i refuse to be a "3" customer; their service (both customer and coverage) doesn't meet my requirement/threshold

hi, i will be going to Melbourne soon and will be there for the next few years, would like to ask your opinion what will be the best telco for using iphone? i mean by data coverage and customer service

i already have an iphone but thinking of getting an iphone 4 for my wife in melbourne, please advise.. based on nokia2003 comment it seems that 3 is out, i have been in uk and been using O2 payngo (prepaid) on my iphone and was very satisfied with it, where i paid 10pound and get unlimited internet and 300 msg.

and is it easy to get an iphone 4 in melbourne? or there is still a waiting period

please advise

thank you in advance

these scenarios are based on the assumption hat you are gonna open a contract (and not on prepaid)

if you can really afford it, go for telstra (bundled credit doesn't include international calls and international texts)

next best thing is, optus (bundled credit doesn't include international calls but includes international texts)

"3" and vodafone have joined venture into a single entity and hence their bundles pretty much mimic one another. but given a choice, opt for vodafone over "3" if possible (bundled credit for "3" and vodafone include both international calls and international texts).

additional information: virgin mobile & TPG run on the optus network and crazy john mobile runs on the vodafone network

Added on October 19, 2010, 8:21 pmiPhone procurement: there is no more waiting period for outright purchases from apple store but networks still cannot get their hands on the units as fast as demand.

New students can't get Optus cause Optus will reject you, you'll have to go for other brands although Optus offers the best deals.

optus will lose more customers if new students cant sign it

You can go on a contract with Optus as in international student, but in most cases the salesperson will have to call India to get an override approval for the credit check.

They are, however, extremely strict on the minimum criteria for international students. The expiry date of your student visa must be after the expiry date of your contract. Sometimes they require an additional 2 months, so if your contract duration is 24 months, as a rule of thumb they require your visa to be valid for 26 months. If you are currently doing pre-U and plan on going to Uni after but only have a visa valid for a year, you can forget about it. They will also require proof of income/allowance from parents, bank statements, etc. In some cases they may also limit you to plans that are below a certain value, say $49, which makes it rather difficult to obtain high value phones on instalment. There is a ton of ID that you need to bring, best to check with the store beforehand.

Any iPhone issued by a carrier will be sim locked, including contract units purchased from Apple. The only unlocked iPhones are those purchased outright (ie. prepaid units) from Apple.

Carriers can unlock the phone for you, I don't know what the charges are but last I heard Telstra unlock fees were pretty expensive. Sometimes it takes several weeks, usually it's done in a few days. The carrier needs to put a request through to Apple to update the registry so that your phone is unlocked. After that, you need to restore your phone so iTunes can unlock it.

let me add a few more information:

telstra's unlocking fee is AUD150 (however if you are an existing telstra customer with other telstra products, for example broadband, landline, tv et cetera, telstra may at its discretion waive the unlocking fee for you)

i'm pleased to say that the unlocking processes for most major networks are almost instantaneous.

hence even if you haven't receive the confirmation text message, you can actually proceed to restore your iPhone via iTunes after two business days.

I have friends who bought iPhone 4 from 3 mobile under a 2 year contract. If I'm not mistaken, they can't use their iPhone 4 with Maxis or DiGi when they come back for summer holiday right? So they either get their phones unlocked by 3 mobile, or they jailbreak and unlock themselves?

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah, I guess they are the holders of the contract since they won't use their parents' name for registration. Thanks a lot.
