I m looking for a power regulator for my ht component whict consist a Yamaha RX-V1800. Yamaha mx-1(power amp), sony bluray player, philip dvd player, sharp 46" lcd tv, wdtv and astro. How big the power regulator do I need for my ht component? To all sifu, can you help in these matter.

Probably above 1000W since 1800 alone is rated at 500W. DVDP, BDP and wdtv consumes very less power. Your power amp and LCD TV probably consumes more than 400W.

Your power regulator would be very expensive.

Check your each equipment watt rating and add it up. Add another 20%-30% watt to your total watt.

A bit different but confusing. Stabilizer is to stabilize the voltage. So it won't go too high or too low. That will safe your equipment from fried and prolong the life. Normally 230V +- 2-5%. While regulator, have more component to stabilize, filter up noise and clean nice waveform. So your hifi have a good vibrant clean sound. Corrrect me if I m wrong.

If possible try to get 3~5kVa

As for most electronic equipment (PC/TV/Power Amp) it already has a internal regulator circuit which is neccessary to provide a stabilised voltage for every section of circuit. So I think a special external regulator is not neccesary.

Suggestion:

Due to voltage flactuation, variation, noise and transient supply from TNB, it better to used the existing UPS. Such as PK Electronics or APC that will provide more than enough to fillup up your requirement. Not only U.P.S but it has voltage stabilizer and conditioner circuit. I've been using it for my media centre and Audio System more than a year.

The UPS will protect you from:

1. Noise, Transient and Surge.
2. A Voltage stabilizer.
3. A temporary power supply in the event of TNB fail to supply. (have a enough time to shut down system)
4. A power conditioner which harmionized the electrical system and feed to your equipments.

A 2Kva (Approx 1600 watt) will sufficient to power up your existing equipment. One Power Amp (300W) + 42" LCD (250W) + media player. The cost for 2Kva is about RM1300, More Kva is mean more fund to invest...

i got mine at electronic shop used unit which the factory closed down,so i grab it.

Suggest you check out at lelong.com under their computer, ups & avr section for a 2KVA unit, which should be adequate for your needs. ;-)

or just get 2 units of APC 750-1KVA - (already got 3 units, but need to change the leadacid battery cos not holding charge anymore)...

(usually cheaper than one giant 2KVA type)

Added on September 26, 2009, 10:21 amif use UPS remember to check for offline/online protection and what kind of sine wave output.. some give really crappy waveform.. and some give nice 90% sine wave output..
IIRC some equipment like projector is sensitive about that (years ago) not sure about the latest projectors...

Generally, if the UPS is an al-cheapo one, then better beware. But minimal, suggest to get at least an AVR to prolong the life of your equipment, if not for any other reason.

as I understand when we need to purchase AVR(automatic voltage regulator), based on your item watts / 0.6 = ****VA of the AVR you need. but anyone know how to calculate Joule when consider purchased on surge protector ? how many of joule require of surge protector if we have about total items ~1800watts?

This UPS and AVR will regulate the power, but does it eleminate/reduce noise as well?

Generic UPS and AVR would help in reducing the noise as well . But the issue here in regards to using these computer grade gears for serious audio is peak current delivery amongst others.
Computer grade protectors tend limit the available current out of the wall outlet even though the KVA ratings would be high.In a single peak , most decent amps would demands tens of Amps to reproduce the dynamics without distortion. These is where the audio grade electrical protectors come in. I agree u dont need ultra high end protection from the makes of PS audio and such but make sure u don't send distorted signal to ur speakers. The easiest way I guess would be to connect power devices directly to wall outlet. Low power equipment could go into these computer grade protectors.
Just sharing what i dug out while I was in the same path.

Last week, there is a thunderstorm at my area. The lightning has cause me a cordless phone, a subwoofer and power gate. Luckily, my ht component like yammy 1800,power amp. lcd tv, bdp, projector and etc wasn't affected by it. The hifi shopowner where I send the subwoofer for repair recommend me to get Powertrans power regulator which cost around 3 to 6 grands. Does it help to protect my ht component from lightning strike? Is there anyway to protect my ht gears from it?
