As for SCB Just One the cash back at 2% (5% on Friday excellent) for all purchases plus get 1 choice points for every RM2 is great. The other benefit is get Choice Points for money in current account in addition to interest. Is there a limit to maximum cash rebate a year i.e. RM600? If there is a cap of RM600 for cash rebate then Alliance Cash rebate plus RM1= 1 points is better for those spending up to RM5K monthly. Overall this card offer looks great in general but I already got 3 current accounts with other banks and SCB branch at my place the traffic is really bad.
*
It's a fair fight between the JustOne and Alliance Visa Plat. JustOne has the best rebates. Alliance Visa Plat has inferior rebates but has miscellaneous benefits like:
- evergreen points (RM1 = 1 point, double on overseas transactions)
- no overseas administration fee
- Purchase Protection Plan (reimbursement on product damage or loss within 30 days of purchase)
- travel insurance (life, luggage delay, luggage damage, flight delay, etc)

So far I've not seen any retail merchants which offer special discounts for SCB and Alliance, unlike the other banks.

Seldom you will face problem overseas but you never know. In my opinion, no harm getting another CC (as standby) that has AF waiver like swipe 12 times. The second card can be a standby as once a while you will find that your CC can't be used for example:

1) you want to use the card the second time at the same merchant within 15 minutes.
2) card become defective or cracked.
3) The card issuer system is facing problem and therefore your transaction can't go thru.

If you are worried about controlling your spending, then get another card from CIMB (if you got MC get Visa or vice-versa) so that your credit limit is shared between this 2 cards.
*
Having 2 cards is also good for retail discounts. Example: You have CIMB and HSBC cards. When eating at Dragon-i, use CIMB for 10% discount. When eating at Amarin Thai, use HSBC for 15% discount.

Hi guys, just a quick question regarding on credit card. Wish can get some information from our fella here. laugh.gif

Anyways, i was thinking to apply for MBB PETRONAS Visa CC, but for now my annual income is 3k below the the minimum requirement. I just wander, do I still any chance to get the card if I submit my application?
*
Your agent can 'adjust' for you. I've applied CC by faxing straight to the bank and then the credit card staff asked me if I wanted a higher grade card. I said I don't qualify (I'm off by about 20K laugh.gif), she said she can adjust. And it was successful.

@cute_boboi,
Yes... CC salesperson does get more commission for Platinum cards approved hence they always try to bodek U to apply for it even if U don't need it.
*
If I remember correctly, commission for platinum cards are double that of classic/gold. Classic/gold commission is RM50 I think... not sure if this is standard. Also, commission is only paid if the card owner is a new member (not having any cards with the bank). This is what I gathered when chatting with the agents... not sure of the accuracy...

@winner,
Uh.... I'd always post-dated my cheques for my Citibank bill payment; I used to mail the cheque off by mail but in the last few months, I would drop the cheque at the banks and thus far, no problems *shrugs*

I guess I'd been lucky but better not do it again *smiles*

@b00n,
I guess I'd just been lucky with Citibank then biggrin.gif
*
My colleague also uses post-dated cheques for Citibank. I drop them at the cheque deposit machine for him every time. He post-dates them like 10 days in the future. Maybe Citibank is lenient, becos he tried with HSBC and they wouldn't allow it.

Hi, wanna ask about SCB JustOne. Would it be better to have 1 principal and 1 supp, or 2 principal? Both applicants are qualified. What would be the advantage of one over the other? Points combination? Shared credit limit? Anything?

Get 2 principals and make each other your supplementary so U can qualify for more rebates? biggrin.gif  Would that work, those who's got the card?
*
tinkerbel, I don't quite get you. Do you mean get 2 principals and 2 supplementary? If you do, then I don't think I need quite that many... it's either 2 principals or 1 principal/1supplementary smile.gif but don't know which one is more advantageous.

@Dannyl,
I can't quite advise because I haven't done much research on the card.  If only the principal cardholder can get the RM600 rebate then go for 2 principal cards; that way U can get RM1200 rebate mah.
*
I've called and asked, 1 principal and 1 supp can combine the reward points and yet still can have individual max RM600 rebate. But the thing I don't like is the statement cannot be separated and will be under the principal. So decided to go for 2 principal. Their office boy came to collect my photocopied IC and CC and let me sign some docs and my application is underway smile.gif

Er yeah but that's what most banks have.  Dannyl by opening 2 separate principal accounts will just be diluting his points.
*
You're right... I might take 1 supplementary instead. Anyway, there's another advantage to 2 principals - if they get approved by this month, there'll be RM50 cash bonus x2 principals.

Guys, those merchants who direct the credit card surcharge to the customers instead of absorbing them, anywhere to report them? BTW, how much is the charges? 2%? 3%?

My JustOne just arrived today. No more RM50 bonus... but the SCB fellow applied for the Business Platinum for me and my wife also, and I was told that once we activate the card by charging to it, we will have RM100 credited to the card. RM100 x2 = RM200. Yay!

The Business Platinum itself isn't very special... 0.5% rebate (excluding petrol), access to KLIA premium lounge, travel insurance, purchase protection, 3x points for overseas purchase... I'd probably stick to ABMB Platinum since it's about the same (or better in most areas) in comparison.

Also, today I asked for an annual fee waiver for Citibank AirAsia card which will be due in October... was told that my usage is too low, if I can spend another RM900 with the card by October, I'll get the waiver. Cancelled it outright.

A question - buying things / booking hotels from overseas websites, considered overseas transactions or not? If yes, then SCB JustOne effective rebate is 1% only after considering the 1% administrative charges.

Need some advice. Saw this travelling tip on LonelyPlanet website. When asked what kind of currency to bring to a distant country where the country's currency is not available for exchange locally, it was said:
QUOTE
Don't bring money!!!

Put everything into either your bank card or credit card (you can actually use your credit card as a bank card and put credit on it). There are ATMs at airports.

When you arrive in each country get out how much you think you need as a big lump sum (it's cheaper that way as you'll only pay one exchange fee which is way smaller than a money exchange) from an ATM.

Can we really 'load up' our credit card account then withdraw the money overseas? I guess if we can, there is no cash advance charge nor daily interest since it's our own available money, yes? Maybe some overseas ATM withdrawal fee...

I will , hehe .. HSBC tower just infront my office .. wee xD
*
Why not you call banks directly to apply? Don't know about other banks, but Standard Chartered sent their boy to pick up my docs and let me sign the forms. I never had to step out of the office.

Most people will bring US Dollar. I always have some US Dollar with me whenever i am going overseas, be it to Jakarta or Hong Kong.
I think you can do that with VISA debit card and debit Mastercard but not with credit card. Whatever money is drawn from your credit card account will be automatically treated as cash advance.

Did you know that some of your locally issued ATM card such as the CIMB Bank ATM card, which has the "Cirrus" logo on the back can be use to withdraw cash at overseas ATM that is "Cirrus" supported ? Another type of ATM card is on the "Plus" network, which is essentially referring to VISA as "Plus" is actually part of VISA. HSBC regular banking customer's ATM card has the "Plus" logo behind.
*
Ok, this is good to know. My ABMB ATM card has the Cirrus logo. I'll call them up to confirm and see if there's any overseas withdrawal fees. BTW, what about the "Maestro" logo?

QUOTE(hye @ Aug 18 2009, 07:06 PM)
Just to add to what already been mentioned, I believe loading it up to your ATM is good if the country's banking infrastructure is good. Plus not to mention that the exchange rate @ the ATM is probably better than your money changer back home. I can personally vouch for this.

However there will be cases where you have no option but to carry loads of cash simply because the banking system on the other side is bad / minimal or even they simply do not accept credit card. Eg. Try to do some travelling to Myanmmar or to some parts of the old Russian Republic and you'll see what I mean.
*
Exchange rate @ ATM is better than our local money changer? That's good news to me smile.gif

Sorry for digressing into ATM territory! But this is a good alternative/addition to CC usage overseas.

Always try to withdraw using your ATM card (must have either the Cirrus or PLUS logo) from overseas ATM machine.

Charges range from:
Zero. For HSBC Premier ATM card from any overseas HSBC ATM machine. I am sure citibank will have something similar.

RM5. Normal HSBC ATM card from any overseas HSBC ATM machine.

RM10-12. For most cards from any overseas ATM machine.

Using credit card to withdraw will result in 5% extra charge on top of the above charges. So use it as a last resort.

As for foreign currency exchange rate. Mastercard (include Cirrus) and Visa (include PLUS) rate are pretty good. Majority of the time, better than from bank counter or bank draft or Telex transfer or money exchange kiosk.
*
Sorry for digressing... again.

Overseas ATM withdrawal fees:
Maybank - RM12
Alliance Bank - RM8

Cirrus and PLUS requires activation first before overseas withdrawal. This can be done by calling your bank or at the ATM itself.

hmm according to the CS. The card is suspended due to "technical reasons" apparently the issue is that there are still some terminals that cannot read the Just1 card. Since i'm an existing Just1 holder i did ask if they were going to send new cards to replace the old ones but the CS doesn't know.
*
Do terminals overseas have this problem? I'm going travelling soon and SCB JO is one of the major cards I'll be using.

Guys, for SCB JustOne, how do you keep track of the total cash rebates you've received? Manually by Excel? There should be a way to keep track since the total allowed is only RM600 per year. I asked SC and they replied:

Thank you for your message dated 24/8/09.

Kindly be informed the cash rebate is as per transaction made and summary of total rebate is yet to be available in the statement. Sorry for the inconvenience caused.

Actually it is quite simple. The banks had it for quite a while already - these banks are allocated a certain merchant ID code/class thus it is easily detectable by the terminal open they swipe the card. This system was already in place when AMBB introduced their Islamic cc several years back.
*
So this is applicable for purchases worldwide?
