The other option is for you to wait until the dev team comes up with an unlock. It has taken them more than 6 months and they still have not been able to unlock iPhone 4 baseband higher than 1.59 so looks like Apple has managed to beat the dev team on this issue.

My friend bought an iPhone 4 from France 6 months ago and it's basically an expensive iPod Touch .... if you are willing to pay the USD170, the provider will basically turn your phone into a factory unlocked phone ... the phone will be unlocked forever (that's what people are saying la ...) which is probably a better option than fiddling with the Gevey Sim. (USD170 is around 520 ringgit ... a Gevey Sim can cost you 250-500 ringgit ...)

You pay RM500 and you get your iPhone unlocked forever. Personally, I'd go with this solution. Dev Team has not been able to unlock the latest baseband for the last 6 months. So your call on how long you want to wait.

My colleague has purchased the iPhone unlock from CutyourSim for USD169.99, he's waiting for the company to whitelist his IMEI and he will report back to me on Saturday to let me know if everything is okay. He got his iPhone 4 from the US for 200 bucks and he does not mind making it a Factory Unlocked phone for an extra 170 bucks. It's been an iPod Touch for the last 6 months.

My understanding was that those shops with the whitelist can only whitelist European iPhone. I was told that they cannot whitelist AT&T iPhone .... maybe now they can, so that's why it's popular?

The gevey sim is not to jailbreak the phone, it's to unlock the phone. Jailbreaking is free and if you're lucky, so is unlocking. But if you have a baseband that cannot be unlocked, then gevey sim or cutyoursim is the only solution you have right now and it's not cheap.

Download Tiny Umbrella and run the program. It should be able to detect your iPhone and tell you what firmware it's on etc.

You can definitely download an older version, but it does not necessarily mean you can install it for your iPhone unless you have saved the SHSH blobs for the firmware you've downloaded.

I think it should work as long as he is not in DFU mode. Then again, I never had this problem before either.

You can always download whatever version of iOS firmware 3.1.2/4.0.1/4.1/4.2.1 etc etc from a lot of places (iClarified and ModMyi is a good reliable source)

BUT it does not mean you can install them into your iPhone. Downgrading your iOS (which is basically what you're trying to do), requires you to have saved (either in Cydia or locally) the SHSH blobs either using Cydia (when you first ran Cydia after your jailbreak and press Make My Life Easier) or locally.

Without these blobs, you're done .... ntohing can be done to install those older firmwares.

Cydia is an application in the iPhone that is installed once you have jailbroken the iPhone. It's not an app you can install like any of the apps from the apple store.

Just follow some of the post where links to guides for jailbreaking has been posted and you will be fine.

Yeap, my friend got his refund from cutyoursim today. He's a bit upset because if he had been a day earlier, he would have gotten his phone unlocked.

In iTunes, press the shift key on your keyboard and at the same time press the Restore button in iTunes. A window will appear asking you to choose te IPSW file.

To jailbreak your iPhone yes (I'm sure David will not be happy so I will not explain any further as I don't want to get this thread closed).

The JB thread is now opened so I will explained further about the DFU mode. There are 2 types of DFU mode, one is the normal DFU mode while another is the limera1n (pwn) DFU mode.

You need to be in the pwned DFU mode to allow for redsn0w to inject the limera1n exploit. Fortunately, redsn0w comes with a great step by step countdown timer for you do put the iPhone in the pwn DFU mode.

Just follow the step and your factory unlocked iPhone should be jailbroken via redsn0w.


For those who have locked set, pwnagetool has been released (for Mac) and this allows you to create a custom firmware which will enable you to preserve your baseband.

My friend told me that he got his refund already. So I guess refunding the money is not a problem.

You are talking about things that are not related to each other

1. Ultrasn0w - allows you to unlock your phone (for those locked set ie. AT&T set etc etc), an unlock can only be apllied once a phone is jailbrken
2. Sn0wbreeze - a Windows program that allows you to create custom firmware which in turns allows you to jailbreak your phone. Custom firmware is a modified iOS firmware that allows you to preserve your baseband (why do you need to preserve baseband? -- well since ultrasn0w can ONLY work with certain baseband so you will want to make sure that during the upgrade, you don't upgrade the baseband)
3. Greenpois0n - A multi OS program that allows you to jailbreak your iPhone but only up to firmware 4.2.1, firmware higher than 4.2.1 is not supported

For firmware higher than 4.2.1, you will need to use redsn0w - WARNING, redsn0w is for those with factory unlocked iphone, those who only require a jailbreak and does not require unlocking of the baseband.

BUT, if you don't care about unlocking the phone, then you can use redsn0w to JB and activate the phone, the baseband will be upgraded (so basically there is a BIG chance that you will not be able to unlock the phone forever --other than using the Gevey Sim).


Using either Pwnagetool or sn0wbreeze will allow you to preserve the baseband (and most likely allow you to activate the phone as well) so I would recommend this route. Who knows, maybe after activation, you find out that the phone is on a baseband that can be unlocked via ultrasn0w ... you may be lucky.
