altec lansing laa u never miss it ... the bass is very good.. dat y till now this old model is on sales even is alreadt more than 4 yrs modle edy

If you just want to compare the 2 speakers, I'll go for Altec Lensing.

However, Altec Lensing 4121 kind of bad speaker compared to others with same price range speakers. If you really want Altec Lensing branded add some more money go for 4221.

Alternatively, within the price range, I'd recommend Edifier C2. With a stand alone equalizer, better sound effect but slightly loose to Altec Lensing 4221's sub woofer on bass sound.

If you can go for budget around RM 400, you have plenty of good speakers selection. You can try one by one of them to listen how solid the bass and how clear is the treble sound.

For your information, Altec Lensing cheaper price range speakers, such as 4121 and 4221, are really quite old products. Last time I can say they were super cool, even the best; but now sorry, they have no match with those low range speakers...

My budget is Around RM200-RM250 only...
LOL..Quite worry since V4121 are so long time ago=.=

Go for altec u won't regret it ... Because my shop using that.. Everyone say the sound very very good

Altec is definte answer. I miss altec bass.

Anyway now i m using amplifier with my own selected speaker and woofer.

EDIFIER sucks no good at all pls du ntake or u will regret trust us ALTEC 4121 is definately okie .. dun worry got outdated or not important is the quality of sound is still nice than now new edifier sound system especially.. edifier jux a pattern nice dun get fool by it ..

altec 4121 losed out in terms of treble and sound clarity, only thing nice is its powerful bass. for the price of 4121, there are better alternative out there. a good place to test speaker between brands can be found in sri computer as mentioned in ealier post. but never buy from this shop.

Altec Lansing is ok until the later model/newer model which is suck to the max... i'd go for Logitech, in this case... i still go for Logitech Z4...

huh... that's weird.. so many altec supporters here... i thought the clear winner should be logitech z4? hence the higher price tag... try posting in audiophiles section, i'm pretty sure u'd get more response supporting z4 instead of altec.. anyway, what i heard is, if u still want the altec lansing 4121, go for the old model... cos the old model sound quality much better than the new one.. dunno how to differentiate the new and old one though (it's the LED, different colour btwn the old n new, but i dunno which is which)...

if not mistaken the older model is silver with blue led, newer ones are full black with red led.

thanks for the clarification dlwl by the way, i used to open up a thread regarding choosing a speaker within the 200-250 budget too... and altec vs4121 kena hentam kaw2... lots of people recommend edifier m3300, better clarity, but not as bassy as vs4121... but if u're willing to sacrifice clarity for bass, get urself the old 4121 if u can... and another thing is, speakers dont get outdated as quick as other hardwares... and prices wont drop easily, might even increase if got demand... so dont wait for few months for price to drop, cos that's unlikely to happen (i waited for a year and edifier s330 price still remains the same)..

well, between altec vs4121 and edifier m3300, one with more clarity, the other with more bass, i guess you're gonna end up with logitech z4 (pardon me, i'm a bit of a logitech fanboy )
to me z4 is something in the middle, sounds nice even on my intergrated sound card. should definately sound much better if paired with a sound card.

in the end it's still up to you TS, you can't just base on our opinions here only and straight go to the store and get your speakers. take the opinions here as recommendations, and then you gotta test them yourself. or bring someone who can differentitate sound well along with you to the store to test the speakers. see which one suits you the best. what suits our ears doesn't definately suit yours

plus, the z4 looks good too! the reviews for the z4 are mostly positive, but i dunno if u can find one within ur budget.. cos most shops are selling for rm300++... ur budget can only buy altec vs4121 or edifier m3300..

i got the z4 for a very very good price
can say cheaper than the current price of vs4121.
that was a once in a lifetime offer

if you're not really urgent into getting a new set of speakers, maybe you can wait a little longer, save a little more and then get the z4

should had went to audiophile section, too much fanboism i see. infact some people doesnt even used other brand before, they'll say altec is good and others suck

It depends on the needs of the user as well. For me, I have 2 Altec Lansing VS4121 speaker system. Both of them I bought it back circa 2004 and 2006. I admire its bass system on its subwoofer. I used it to listen to those type of songs which have a lot of bass, for example, pop genre.

i would go for z-4, owned 1 before. good clarity, good bass response. i would go for z-4 anytime than altec or edifier

that time a store was having it's grand opening. so happen to be there that day, saw and tested the speakers, and i liked it. the next day went to grab it

Kind of true Most of them just buy Altec Lensing by friend's recommendation...I can say I was commented as an idiot after I bought my Edifier S330 and told my friend after that. But I never regret because I put my effort on every brand's research and review, tested on site, and found that this really an ownage

If you asked me, i prefer ATP 3 (the earlier version) compared to VS4121.

I owned ATP3 before but i sold it to get VS4121 coz this model has the headphone jack.

Never tried z4 before but i think it should be impressive

Altec VS4121, got loud bass, if u like bass and only bass then it's the one

Bass Quality = Okok, if room is very empty or small, bass become high tone and boomy. The bass is rather "loose", it will sound loud and slightly to the lower end (50Hz) but you wont be able to feel the punch. Its more like cinema bass, loud but you body cannot feel the "shake." Not suitable for certain types of music. Below 40Hz hard to hear even spec says 25Hz lowest.
Bass Quantity = A lot

Mid Quality = Not good, very thin sounding, not warm and full
Mid Quantity = Less

Treble Quality = Not so good, a bit harsh/grainy, cant give good "air" feeling.
Treble Quantity = Normal

Soundstage = Weak. Instrument Spacing/Stereo is rubbish. Sounds very "computerized/clinical" But the soundstage sounds big around 2000-8000Hz but sounds harsh/sweet, good for rave/techno songs.

Vocal Quality = Weak. Thin vocal, not full and warm...hard to catch what singer is saying without seeing lyrics most of the times.
Vocal Soundstage = Weak. Cannot hear the vocal echo/ambient properly, sounds fake. Voice sounds coming out from the speaker cone, not in the center like high end speaker....

Tone Balance = Hard to find correct/perfect settings with bass and treble control, will have to change settings from type of song to song. The speaker's design itself make its hard to get good tone due to it's driver placement (down firing midrange).

Frequency respond

25-40Hz rubbish, they should have stop at 40hz, sometime music with alot of very low bass can make the woofer bottom out and have "knocking" sound, the woofer cone vibrate alot, but no sound come out. ==
40-60Hz good
60-120Hz ok
125-250Hz not consistent, depend on your room, it might make this part totally soft or can be overwhelmingly loud
250-400Hz bad, due to driver placement, the warm and full sound is gone
400-800Hz slightly low in volume in this region
800-2000Hz weak, makes music sound thin
2000-8000Hz okay, quite balanced and soundstage is biggest here
8000-10000Hz okay, just that it sound grainy
10000Hz-12000Hz bad, it seem that this part has some eq which make its louder in the mix, makes it hard to balance the low-high frequency coordination.
12000-160000 okay, just that it sound grainy
after that the speaker cant really produce anything higher than that frequency

i own a 4121 in the past so i know how it sounds like, Z4 i audition before, but cannot give it comments because i did not listen it enough to catch all the details, but i can say the sound signature/shape is something like 4121, just that the woofer dont bottom out easily, Bass Quality = Better but Quantity= Less. get what i mean? Basically Z4 will have better quality sound in most area where 4121 is weak in but it cant go as loud as 4121

lol..i just tried V4121 and also X540 logitech..i found that V4121 sound is better than X540,the bass is better,but how clear i cannot classified lar..LOL...i am not a pro in this,so probably I will go for Either V4121 or Z4!!!lol..

my fren use that model last time, the quality i can say is good.. last time i used Altec ATP 3 oso. but now spoiled d.. T_T

perhaps, bring your mp3 player along and audition the 2 set of speakers (or any other brand, models, etc) yourself and judge them yourself? whichever better to your ears, and within your budget, ---->go for it
