Last time, I used to write factual essay and my marks is always 37.

I thought I can change a bit of my mark grading so I decided to write story, and NO, it didn't help. Still 37 maintained!!

for factual essays u need an analytical mind.. like you have to think up reasons etc. and also you need to have good general knowldge, which is lacking in most secondary school students... its kinda challenging and i like it .. heh..

in fact all my life in secondary school, i nvr touched story writing..

factual essay is easy... you just need to read newspaper and history books..

i just like the 'opinion' essay.. it same as factual.. but we can elaborate it on our own[not too much facts]

I dont think factual is my cup of tea,I only manage to get 25 and when I change to descriptive essay I got 28 and now on trial I try story writing I got 33.
The graph increasement seems not worthy.
Hmm sometimes I felt jealous when my friend got 28 just for descriptive essay which I think mine is more powerful I mean the words..grammar is my biggest weakness.
Hmm can anyone share his/her essay? I do think I need to read others essay to ameliorate mine

You must talk about facts, obviously. biggrin.gif I once heard my teacher saying that you should at least have 12 points.

I still haven't got my essay back for the trial exam.. Maybe tomorrow. I wrote too little this time. I hope it won't affect my overall mark. My teacher said I did well for my est. I don't know why my est paper is always better than my english. sweat.gif

Anyway, why don't anyone of you post your essays?

Actually believe it or not...story writing IS the MOST EASY essay to score..
no kidding...
there's no right and wrong as its all your creativity..
just look up some articles or reference books to pick up some interesting lines..

factual essays you really need a lot of facts so i am bluntly discouraging students doing that essay unless you're packed with facts..
my teachers also recommend us to story writing...
if you wanna score A1 for the cambridge A its best to do story writing...factual writing doesnt really appeal to the examiners though...

thats just my opinion..but good luck and all the best.. smile.gif

Hi there, I would like to make sure about something.

For the last option in continuous writing (the one which usually has only one word), is it true that we are free to write ANYTHING as long as it has something to do with the word given?

Say the question is.... Water.
I can write about the importance of it, the inspiration it gave me etc etc or even make up a story related to water, am I right?

Many thanks in advance smile.gif

Yes, it's true. Write about how important water is. Write about how water flooded the earth and made you the last survivor on earth. Write about your boyfriend named Water. Write about the existence of water on other planets. Write anything smile.gif

EDIT: Anything to do with water lol ( in case you literally write anything and blame me for getting out of topic ). As long as Water plays a central role in your story/factual essay, even if you use it as the name of your dog, you can't get out of topic with a question so vague.

yes...you are not restricted to any kind of essays..
you can make it into a story or factual essay...
you wont be penalized even if what you wrote is kinda ridiculous as long as your essay is about the topic..

I hope this helps. My English essay for my Semester Exam. Its a narrative. Got 46/50 for it. I'm in Form 5 btw. Its a general essay with the title "fashion". So when it comes to essays like this, you can either write a factual essay or a narrative essay. I usually stay away from factual essays because it is not my forte.

Beware, its very long.

Haha nice essay, though you have to admit that unless you have a decent eng teacher (which is lacking in msia), more than half of it is wasted on them and high marks are achieved by their lack of understanding.
My preference as of late is to forgo entertaining stories for depth of thought. Sadly, depth is often under-appreciated in the malaysian high school level.

What school do you go to, Iwanurmoney?

actually..factual essays need to be packed with facts and all..you even need to use argumentative words such as on the contrary etc.
its best to write stories for now...

Depth of thought has no relation whatsoever to factual essays haha. That would be depth of knowledge and exposure. I'm talking about philosophy and creation theories, the meaning of life, the greatest fallacies that plague our society etc. I see no reason to play it safe when writing essays as the whole point in writing essays is to express opinions and entertain. Provided you have a sufficient grasp of the language, i believe that it is infinitely better than plain-jane grammatically sound but intellectually empty essays. Satire, irony, using Filibusters in an essay to convey a point. All this is lost to most.

Don't just be an english teacher, be a columnist, be an author smile.gif
