I tried both 50mm f/1.4 and f/1.8; none of them are sharp wide open. But the Sigma version is seriously good.

yeah, but from what i read on digital-picture.com the author said the AF is very inconsistent at f/1.4 wide open.
is that true ?

the sharpness relative to its price.. i'd say it never disappointing me..

Previously i used 50mm f1.8 to shoot my product pictures...later i found out that my tammy 18-200mm takes sharper images than the 50mm at same focal length and aperture. Lets say both at 50mm and f5, the Tammy is sharper and better in color than the canon 50mm. The canon 50mm is very soft at wide opened aperture.

By the way, i sold off both and bought Tammy 17-50mm f2.8 for my 400d...

yes, I am refering to EF 50mm f/1.4, EF 50mm f/1.8 and Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM.

I'm not sure what is Sigma's policy in Malaysia; but Sigma Singapore offers free lens calibration even after your warranty is expired. There will always be sample variations when you purchase any lens so you might want to test a few copies before you pay the shopkeeper.

I do prefer the 50mm focal length of my 24-70L over the 50mm f/1.8. The L is sharp even at f/2.8, has ring UM motor and the circular aperture creates very lovely bokeh. But then the L lens is 17x the price of the 50mm f/1.8

50mm f1.8 is really damn sharp if step down to f4 !!!

but the bokeh is just so-so for the f/1.8

i just grab my 50mm F1.8 last few weeks, so far im very very satisfy with the results as it is very BIG BANG FOR THE BUCKS !

for 50mm, nothing beats the sigma 50mm f/1.4 i guess. the only thing is not sure sigma got offer free calibration like spore ma, coz i heard sigma lens tend to back/front focus?

my nikon fren shoot very sharp pics with his nikon 50mm f/1.4 wide open (make me jeles nia)

btw, wanna ask 40d users here. if i use focus points other than the center point, any shortcut to go back to center?

Speaking of 50mm? Both Siggy 50mm f1.4 HSM and Nikkor 50mm f1.4 can't come near to 50mm f1.2 L USM. I've personally owned Nikkor 50mm f1.4 on my D300 and also owned Canon 50mm f1.8/f1/4/f1.2 and tested Sigma 50mm f1.4 HSM personally.

I could hardly see any of the above could give me results like below. Both fired at wide open f1.2.
