QUOTE(nujikabane @ Jun 15 2009, 11:26 AM) Even if intra-day transaction? Meaning morning buy, afternoon sell? Hi....Intraday transaction will not get you the dividend. If you buy on the day before ex-date, you need to hold it till the next day to qualify for the dividend. If you buy this morning, sell this afternoon and ex-date tomorrow, you will not get the dividend. You must be holding the shares through both days, the date before ex- until the ex- date. You can then sell your shares on the ex-date but the price has been corrected.I thought the day after only can sell. Sigh n0b like me |

QUOTE(nujikabane @ Jun 15 2009, 11:57 AM) Alright, thanks! Yes you are correct on the top portion. The price on ex-date will be 0.90 (thereabouts), but if people really like the company, you may see the price rise too. So sell it then. Last year, I happened across Zelan like that. By the way, what does it mean that the price has been corrected ? Say the closing price a day before ex-date is 1.00 and they declare 10c div, so the price on ex-date will be 0.90 ? I'm thinking of buying Gopeng, in which they've declared dividend ex-date to be tomorrow. Is it a good idea, since it's just one day before ex-date ? Or do I look around for companies declaring dividends in the near future, rather than those declaring it tomorrow? Gopeng - not sure...Never study ini punya company. |

QUOTE(panasonic88 @ Jun 15 2009, 12:28 PM) to my surprise Aiya, both share I also have....Tanjong still yet to break my buy price of 13.60. It did not drop enought to 12.80 for my averaging down plan....But still got 15sen (after tax) div. Sealink dropped to 0.885 while Tanjong at 13.50 now. see, market is always full of surprises! And Sealink, aiyo, drop soooo much 4 sen....but oil prices dropped last Friday, so not surprising. I still holding my Sealink, since I buy at around 0.6x, then still have 4sen div...Hehehe...About 6.25% yield...Somemore price appreciate...Hold long term.... Added on June 15, 2009, 1:27 pm QUOTE(nujikabane @ Jun 15 2009, 01:01 PM) How will the share price be corrected after the ex-date? I am not sure what you are planning or hoping for your purchase. It is NOT ALWAYS a scenario where you can buy before ex and sell on ex with a profit. Let me illustrate. Is it based on the closing price minus the dividend declared ? Company A: Ex-Date 16th June, Div: $0.10 per share, Share closing price: $1.00 on 15th June. Say you buy 10,000 shares on 15th June. So you own 10,000 shares worth $10,000. On 16th June, the company will pay out to you $1,000 base on your 10,000 shares holdings. Obviously, if the share price remained at $1.00, then you would have made $1,000 just by buying the stock on the day before ex- and then sell on the ex-date at the same price if the price was not adjusted. No company would give you this chance go earn so easy money. So the share price will be adjusted accordingly, perhaps to $0.90. So your 10,000 shares are now worth $9,000 with your dividends $1,000 that equals what you paid on 15th June = $10,000. This is how it works. Occasionally some traders may really want those shares and drive the price back up to $1.00 and you are in win-win if that happens. Most of the time, it will trade lower on the day of the ex. QUOTE(cherroy @ Jun 15 2009, 01:43 PM) I will sell if they reporting dismay Q result which make them unable to payout generous dividend as usual or based on current result, 16-17 should be my long term target. cherroy, how would you gauge a dismal Q results? Loss, or less profit? And what would be a generous dividend? More than 15sen? As i know, every quarter also declare dividend last year. Not sure this year got or not. Keep fingers cross for the next week announcment.... |

QUOTE(panasonic88 @ Jun 15 2009, 03:20 PM) Generally, most O&G related counters down today follow the crude oil prices. This category (O&G) quite bullish in coming months, expecting that US will use more petrol for summer holiday travels (unless they cut down), but as winter approaching, price of energy expected to rise. Also, inventories & production can be manipulated. I think OPEC, or UAE/Bahrain/Qatar etc. will ensure price of oil reaches USD75/barrel else later on, instead of high rise apartments they will just have lots of high rise concrete. Last few weeks see rise of oil from $62-$63 to $70+....Some pullback definitely expected. Some more, MAS say if oil maintain above $66 for rest of quarter, they can expect see profit recovery. Wow... |

QUOTE(nujikabane @ Jun 15 2009, 03:34 PM) Sigh, maybe due to my stupidity or naivety, or both, Hey, how long have you been trading shares? If you don't mind me asking..... I made a bad mistake today. Bought Gopeng for 100,000 shares @ 0.77 to get dividends, because they're proposing 2c dividends, ex-date tomorrow. Should have checked the history, because I bought it at a very high price. Sigh, at least can get dividend, but dunno how long have to wait to offload the shares, meaning when will the price becomes 0.77 again. n00b ! $0.77 for today is quite high, considering it opened at $0.72. And if it did not close at $0.77, you will see 2sen off the closing price today. Just curious, why you buy Gopeng for 100,000 shares @ $77,000 for 2.6% div when you could have bought any other more fundamentally strong company for that amount? And some companies offer higher dividend yield. In fact if I had $77,000 I would have sapu the Tanjong kao kao when it was at $13. Only not enough capital then have to average down at lower prices....sigh.... |

QUOTE(panasonic88 @ Jun 15 2009, 04:00 PM) @VyvernS Thanks for the link, Pana! i referred to here: http://www.nymex.com/index.aspx (delayed 15 mins tho) i tot you have Sealink, plan to average up? Yup.....Average up. It ran amok last week, I did not think it would actually reach $0.95. Monitoring it and it just go up and up, then i got the jitters and did not buy. Luckily, because this week offer cheaper. Now that it is down, there is a window of opportunity to average up, but at a lower price from last week. This price is better, about $0.10 down. I doubt it will slide all the way back down to $0.6x. If i average at $0.85, my ABP will be $0.75, dividend yield still >5% offered by Sukuk. Hands itchy.....Suppose to just hold, but the price too delicious.... This post has been edited by VyvernS: Jun 15 2009, 04:07 PM |

QUOTE(naz_b_85 @ Jun 15 2009, 04:49 PM) There won't be any big correction until mid July at least. Just some small one but this might be more shallow than we think. I need to gauge retailers' sentiment....who's panicked right now? Please contribute haha...Lowyat good place to gauge sentiment. http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=206...id=aQN14KenFD6gAccording to this article, apparently investors feel that share prices have outstripped the prospects for earnings. Hence Asian & European stocks have fallen on this speculation. I believe that should data output from US be favorable, there would be a reversal of this trend. My opinion though. http://money.cnn.com/2009/06/12/markets/ma...ahead/index.htm - This article from CNN has what's coming out this week from US data. |
