Hi all, I own a cm690 casing with 4 120mm fan. 1 inlet at the front and 1 at the side panel. Exhaust is at the top& back panel of the casing. It has been less than a month but my casing is already covered in dust inside and outside. What can I do to reduce the dust and how can I clean them from my mobo ?

Install the dust filter for the side cover fan (the front fan is already having a filter).

CM 690 is good for airflow, but it also attract dust. It is quite norm ...
Try to clean your case once every month (which I am doing right now).

there's no effective way to reduce the dust effectively i'm afraid.

all u can do is to clean it regularly. the fastest way is by blowing it. don't use vacuum when ur cleaning the mobo, gc or any electrical/electronic parts as static might damage the components (diodes, chips etc).

i'm oso using the same casing, 7 90cfm fans inside running. with or without the filter in a week or 2, a thin layer of dust is alr visible inside. sweat.gif

Find a thin sponge to cover the top just like the ones provided for the front cover. Then use a filter or DIY filter (pantyhose) for all the fans.

I disagree. should make it positive airflow n put some intake filters on the fans. this should minimize the dust

Hmm how do u clean it ? Dismantle everything and wash it with water ? How about the dust on the mobo and GPU ?

Hmm yea less than a month i can already see dust. By blowing it you mean using a hairdryer ?

hairdryer? sweat.gif

no la, dunno how to say the thing, i'm using it to blow the dust out ( the one u squeeze2, blower?) tongue.gif

u can get it at any pc shop, cheap too. and don't forget to get a brush, either a hard or soft type. perfect for fans, mobo and gc.

it didn't minimize the dust,it just minimize the dust to be seen by ur eyes frm the outside, once in a while u still need to wash ur filter

and filter will lower ur fan's airflow as well (cfm),although not so obvious but the effect is still thr

@Sib

Hahaha, urs look like it came out from the desert. laugh.gif

@TS

Im running 2 front intake, 1 rear, 3 high cfm exhaust at top, and 1 rear exhaust. At front there's already sponge lyr so no need to worry, the side is kinda bad.
At the bottom, place a thin sponge/filter for ur psu, its one of the weak points of CM690, its gonna kill ur psu long term if u leave it naked. wink.gif
My bottom got no fan, just a filter cuz got no space, too cramp with my pump. sweat.gif .
Dust will always be there unless ur in a 'dust free room' of course, u'll have to clean the surroundings too.
Get urself the Cyber Clean stuff, its very easy to clean anything, fans, intakes n filters, dun use it on ur electrics though.
I've just cleaned my pc after 6-7 mths, and it wasnt that bad cuz i clean my room often. The dust layer collected was just like a house thats not been cleaned for 2 weeks. (thats my house la, others i dunno) nod.gif

like the psu and gc where cooling is really important, if the dust cover the fans/heatsink . . . means less airflow, means more heat buildup then ends up with damages to components. For rams, not really, unless u oc them wit high volt, which requires colling too.

use a positive airflow system with filter installed in all intake fan. Optimize your case air flow. Even you have so many fan slot doesn't mean you have to use all of them.

I get a lot of dust cause 6 out of 8 fans are high performance. I clean it every 2-4 weeks. My casing is on the table and it's next to the window.

Use supers SUCKING vacuum cleaner biggrin.gif Opt dust filter in every intake part, cleaning will be easier
And try fan controller, when using your PC doing light stuff or downloading, lower the CFM thumbup.gif

Do you mean the Cyber Clean gel which is greenish/yellowish in colour? I use it to remove dust/dirt from my mice/keyboards as well as casing fan intakes... pretty easy to use.

look at their forum:

would be great to have filters for those massive 200 and 230mm fans

Hey guys..im having the same dusty casing problem...
and is looking for dust filter u guys mention...
but where the hell can we get the damn dust filters!!!

i've been searching in lowyat (quite thoroughly) for 2 times...
almost non existence there..!!
WHERE CAN WE BUY A DUST FILTER??

i saw a guy mentioning about "pantyhose" here..was thinking bout whether it can be work
and how exactly can we "mod" the pantyhose...

1 more thing regarding the intake and exhaust...
i have been trying out various settings...

i find it better if the top exhaust fan to be intake..
but u have to move is to the front slot...
the results measured are as follows...

Conditions: air-cond@22 degrees, Bad Company 2 for about 1 hour, screen shot was taken immediately after i close the game
the max temp seems to be lower, tested this about 3 times under the same setting and the max temp is consistently lower by about 2 degrees

*ignore the min temp*

RM18 is about the standard price most seller quote. The problem is i think availability is mostly via import and there are only limited vendors who carries this stuff. I have been using the steel mesh for over 2.5years and it is still in good condition even with frequent soap wash.

HAF series will definitely have greater problems with dust...
as there are more fan slots, for bigger fans, more hole to trap heat etc...

Water cooling is expensive and need constant maintenance..
need to change the coolant periodically rite?
and i think some high end water cooling radiator got a lot of fans as well
dust & sound problem will still be there...

i rather open up my casing and clean every month

Eh, I don't have this case but I want to ask, the front panel can fit how many 120mm fans? Assume I'm not installing any drives into the 5.25" lah.

Anyway, if you want to do air cooling then can do positive air pressure, more intakes than exhausts. If the air pressure inside is strong the air won't seep in through gaps and holes in your casing, so you can make sure the only way dust will go in is through the filtered intakes.

I recommend one or two exhausts only la, then you wrap the outgoing side of your intakes with women's stocking. Metal mesh also cannot beat the superiority of women's stocking but if there's no women in the house you might have a problem getting it la, lol.

And don't vacuum your case la, the flow too strong and constant will build up a lot of static one.

The casing comes with 1 and only 1 fan (120mm) for the front panel..
which it connects to the controller on the top panel...(to switched the LED on and off)
don't think u wanna change it..

Well wat u mean was pantyhose..
i cut a piece of the cloth out and installed on the side panel...
Believe me..u will need it if u want to install a fan there..not becoz of dust but...
the design of the side plastic mesh is flawed...
no matter what fan u put there...it will have some VERY VERY VERY annoying whirling sound...
with the pantyhose filter...it is almost soundless smile.gif (refer to picture attached)

Im running it at positive air flow...3 intake 1 exhaust (not including the power supply)
and u are wrong...dust still everywhere in the casing despite cleaning my room very frequently....

yea, i'm sorry for being wrong on the internet.

so, i was asking. how many fans can you fit onto the front panel?

any extra mountings for additional fans besides the one that came with the case?

especially the area on the 5.25" bays, any screw mounts for fans?

oh and sorry for being wrong. but you so correct so i have to apologize. sorry man.

u mean air flow?
i tested that more air flow does not decrease the temperature anymore...
so the main aim is noise & dust reduction

the results measured are as follows...

Conditions: air-cond@22 degrees, Bad Company 2 for about 1 hour,  screen shot was taken immediately after i close the game
the max temp seems to be lower, tested this about 3 times under the same setting and the max temp is consistently lower by about 2 degrees

IT is almost the same temp
P/S: the air flow (look hdd temp) is hotter due to surroundings temps

But sometimes have to be careful, these blowers will collect moisture from compressing air one.

trust me doing it outdoor works , whistling.gif
furthermore it doest compress air as much like those we use for painting and spraying, just strong wind

but need careful setting too high speed, it could break your fans bearing and fins rather than collecting moisture

not just cm casing have this problem. Me also have a sff casing (microfly) a lot of dust trap in my panaflo fan intake & exhaust side. But weirdly my cpu cooling thermaltake orb & PSU fan did not have a lot of dust. Maybe because i just quit smoking & my sff casing is located not under my table but higher my pc table.

For the mineral oil this things have been around for 2 or 3 years back. Try Google mineral oil used in cars and other scary electronics or mechanical parts.

Gents, I have found a low cost solution to CM690 and probably other casing's dust accumulation problem.

I found this at DAISO

user posted image

I use a transparent plastic sheet as the frame for air intakes at the side panel and front grille. I cut the filter and affix it to the plastic frame using a double-sided tape.

user posted image

Here's the front grille. I use the grille's bent metal as a hook to hold the frame of the filter. For the side panel filter, I cut the plastic sheet into a 120mm x 120mm square shape and cut 4 triangles inside it, creating an "X" in the middle. I had to make a frame to prevent the filter from touching the fan blades. I put double-sided tape on all side and the "X" to make sure it kept the filter in place.

user posted image

I also place the filter at the bottom air intake and PSU air intake. Since the casing already have a mesh filter there, I did not make another frame. I cut the filter according to the size of the existing mesh filter, affix a small double-sided tape to keep it in place and put the dust filter in between the casing and the hard mesh filter. It fits rather nicely. I did not use a lot of the filter for this modification. There are still a lot of spares and I intent to use them as replacement when the filters get dirty.

The results:

user posted image user posted image

I have to say the results are quite spectacular. The dust filter dissipated the blue LED light from the front fan and creates a rather nice uniform glow. The filter doesn't impede the airflow so much. Placing my hand in front, I can still feel the air going quite strong into the casing. And the best thing is, the insides of my casing so far, are clean and dust free.

Total Cost of materials:

Dust filter RM 5.00 (DAISO)
Transparent Plastic RM 5.00 (DAISO)
Thin Double-sided tape RM 1.50
Total: RM 11.50

Just wanted to ask, is there a way to open up the parts holding the dust filters? For cleaning purpose ofcourse.

For the CM 692? Unfortunately no. You're going to have to wash the filter with the front panel together since it's not exactly removable. You could uinscrew the bottom part and from there attempt to extract the filter but it will be tough. Not a very smart move by Cooler Master in my opinion sad.gif. However, for the 4x 5.25" bays, you can probably take the filters out, but you could risk breaking the metal parts that hold the filter because it isn't exactly strong and probably wouldn't withstand too much bending back and forth.

You mean, just open the front panel and rinse in water?

Very sad la, thought can open up and clean out the dust filters just like that. sad.gif

It's not a very smart move truthfully. But on the bright side the users are forced to wash the front panel together and that keeps the chassis looking even better than ever. tongue.gif

Put filter = Clean case + high temp (due to restricted air flow)
no filter = good temperature (for a while) + then dust accumulates (high temp)

it still ends up high temp on both ways actually , but the filter is more reasonable.

It aledi comes with filter lah..
even if u install more filters at the side...dust will still find its way in~
the temp inside wont go up very high with filters~~Air can still go in at a high rate~

argh why u install the filters on ur side panel ? i think it will block more air flow and create more noise.

Gents, I have found a low cost solution to CM690 and probably other casing's dust accumulation problem.

I found this at DAISO

Total Cost of materials:

Dust filter   RM   5.00 (DAISO)
Transparent Plastic   RM   5.00 (DAISO)
Thin Double-sided tape RM   1.50
Total:  RM 11.50

just tried this method on my corsair 400R, air flow has decreased a bit, i guess my fan static pressure is enough to penetrate the filter, but i still can feel the air blowing although not as strong as before

the most noticeable thing is THE SOUND FROM THE FAN IS GONE!! rclxm9.gif
