REDS SNAP UP FRENCH STARLET
Liverpool have confirmed the signing of French defender Chris Mavinga from Paris Saint Germain.

Reports in France earlier this week claimed Liverpool had offered Mavinga a three-year deal at Anfield and the 18-year-old has now put pen-to-paper on the contract.

Arsenal were believed to be interested in signing the versatile defender, but Liverpool have won the race to bring Mavinga to England.

Mavinga follows in the footsteps of David Ngog in leaving Paris for Liverpool following the striker's switch last summer.

The young Frenchman is Liverpool's second signing of the summer following Glen Johnson's arrival from Portsmouth.

CITY IN TALKS TO SIGN ADEBAYOR
Manchester City have entered talks to sign Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor, according to Sky Sports News.

The station claims talks were opened at the weekend and have continued. Exact details remain sketchy but negotiations are said to be at a 'significant level'.

Adebayor's future at Arsenal has been in doubt for some months but a move to Manchester City would still be something of a surprise given they signed Roque Santa Cruz three weeks ago and are expected to announce the purchase of Carlos Tevez during the next 48 hours.

guys,

Due diligence completed on Pompey takeover

Sulaiman Al Fahim's £60m Portsmouth takeover is close after he completed due diligence, according to reports.

The Arab property tycoon has spent nearly a month poring over Pompey's books, and reports on the south coast suggest that process is at an end.

Portsmouth paper The News claim Al Fahim's advisor, Ivo Ilic Gabara, has confirmed due diligence has finished as his takeover bid inches ever closer.

The Premier League last week started their fit-and-proper-person investigation into Al Fahim.

Pompey expect that process to take a week, although reports suggest it could take nearer a fortnight.

100% completed stated at Pompey Offical Site.

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce has landed his second summer signing when he clinched a deal for Paraguay skipper Paulo da Silva.

The 29-year-old central defender, who has been capped more than 50 times for his country, has put pen to paper on a three-year deal to seal a move from Mexican club Toluca.

Bruce said: "I'm delighted to have signed a player of Paulo's experience.

"He is captain of his country and has played at the highest level in South America, so will bring leadership qualities to our side.''

ADEBAYOR CLOSE TO CITY SWITCH
A work permit for Emmanuel Adebayor appears to be the only thing standing between Manchester City and yet another jaw-dropping £25million signing.

Even before Carlos Tevez put the finishing touches to a five-year deal, rumours were circulating that Adebayor was undergoing a medical after a fee had been agreed with Arsenal.

Then it emerged he will attempt to secure a work permit - which should be nothing more than a formality - before heading off to South Africa, via Abu Dhabi for a brief meeting with the Blues owners.

City officials remained silent on the prospect of the transfer being speeded through, although Hughes, given his general reluctance to discuss possible new recruits, rather gave the game away by first confirming talks had taken place, then suggesting they were at quite an advanced stage.

"There has been discussions between ourselves and Arsenal," he said.

"It is not the right time or place to discuss it but yes, there has been contact and possibly there is a deal to be done.

"It has not been concluded as we speak. Until it happens, it is not the time or the place to talk about it."

If the deal goes through, it would bring the number of strikers at City's disposal to 10, four of which would have arrived since January alone, starting with Craig Bellamy.

Spending since June 2008 would be touching £200million, with Hughes confirming City are still in the market for top-class talent - presumably defenders now - in the most amazing spending spree English soccer has ever seen.

And, while a move for John Terry has not paid dividends just yet, Hughes knows what a capture the England skipper would be.

It means City are virtually certain to go back with a third bid for the Chelsea star he first noticed during his own spell at Stamford Bridge well over a decade ago.

"I have had fantastic respect for John Terry since I saw him as a young player when I was at Chelsea," said Hughes.

"He is a great player and an outstanding captain. Any manager would covet a player like that.

"But we have to respect he plays for Chelsea."

The signing makes sense if you ask me. Firstly, 12 million is cheap for an England international keeping in mind how much we paid for Glen Johnson. Secondly, with Emile Heskey and John Carew in the side, they are always going to be a threat from crosses and in Stuart Downing, they now have a decent crosser of the ball.

You have to consider that while he plays on the left, Young is right footed, making Downing the only natural left footed winger of the 3. It's easier and quicker for a left-footed player on that side of the field to whip in zipping crosses for big men like Heskey and Carew to attack.

Spurs close in on £13m Real Madrid striker Alvaro Negredo

Real Madrid striker Alvaro Negredo is expected to sign for Tottenham Hotspur before the weekend, according to reports in Spain.

The north London club have been in talks with the Spanish giants about a number of players since the end of the season and appear to be on the verge of agreeing a deal for the 23-year-old Spaniard.

Tottenham gave up on a bid for former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy last month amid doubts over his knee injury plus high wage demands.

They moved on to talks to sign striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, former Chelsea forward Arjen Robben and Gabriel Heinze.

But the move for Negredo indicates they are losing to Stuttgart in their pursuit of Holland striker Huntelaar.

Madrid intend to offload at least five players in the next few days to fund a final spending spree before the end of the month.

A midfielder is their priority, with Liverpool's Xabi Alonso still their No 1 target. Negredo is also thought to have been offered a switch to Anfield in a bid to sweeten the deal for Spain international Alonso.

Negredo is expected to be sold for between £13million and £15.5m, which would represent good business for the Spanish giants.

Madrid sold him to Almeria two summers ago, but exercised a buyback option last month worth £4.3m.

However, his chances are limited at the Bernabeu with a squad that also includes Raul, Cristiano Ronaldo, Gonzalo Higuain and Karim Benzema.

Meanwhile, Madrid are unmoved by criticism of their near £200m summer spending spree with projections from the club saying that profits of more than £75m a year will pay for £56m Kaka and £80m Ronaldo in under two years.
