Bought a pair of flight ticket earlier during the free seat to Sydney on Aug 2017 thinking I could score a cheap flight from there to Queenstown/Christchurch on a later date.
But kind of regret now with the current look of our currencies.

Will there be any sort of promo to look forward to for flights(Air NZ, Jetstar etc.) from Sydney into Southern Island region?.

Note : Didn't take the AA direct route to NZ since I'm planning to skip Auckland due to limited amount of day.

Anyone rented a campervan and went for stargazing at Mt John?.
Thinking whether it is doable to go for Tekapo Stargazing, then drive down (midnight) to The Pines DOC Camp to overnight by Lake Pukaki.
Or should I skip Tekapo Stargazing ,overnight at The Pines DOC Camp, and hike Mt Cook and do the Big Sky Stargazing instead and end the day camping at White Horse Hill Campground.

I'm borrowing raist86 itinerary btw with slight modification. Going over in an another two week! rclxm9.gif

Just some remarks on your schedule, your Day 3 seems to be very tiring and most of the time will be spent driving. It's a long drive to Queenstown from Mt. Cook and even longer to Te Anau as the route are narrow and winding. You may want to stop for toilet break and photo taking which will add the overall time to be even longer. You need full energy for the drive the next day to Milford Sound as the road is even narrower with lots of buses.

I suggest you to break your journey and do overnight stop at Queenstown. Explore Queenstown a little bit as you will return later or you can even go to Paradise on that day. Start early to Te Anau the next day. Plenty of scenic point on the way to Te Anau.

Your Day 8 also a bit packed, From Kawarau to Wanaka to Paringa Lake. Wanaka itself is a great area with many good attraction. The route to Wanaka itself is very scenic. I would suggest you to camp at Wanaka and explore the area. My personal favourite is to hike the Roy's Peak as it definitely has one of the greatest view there. But do be careful as the hike is quite tough, but rewarding.

Just my personal thought based on my experience on solo travel to NZ last January.  icon_rolleyes.gif

Thanks for the suggestion.
Regarding Day 3, the reason for heading to Te Anau area directly is as it is still Winter time then, and I prefer not to drive the campervan anytime before 8am or after 7pm.
I'm thinking of booking the 9.45am Milford Sound cruise, which means i will not have the time to travel from Queenstown to Milford Sound the next day. I did arrange have some time to enjoy Te Anau scenery in Day 4 in between Milford Sound trip in the moring and the glowworn tour at night.
**note : Now that I'm checking out about Paradise,it seems like a beautiful place to visit. How did i miss this sad.gif

I'm having the same issue with Day 8 as well since I'm planning for the Fox Glacier Skydive in Day 9,which is why I'm planning to camp closer to that area.
But I might be able to schedule the skydive to afternoon, and head from Wanaka to Fox Glacier straight in Day 9 morning. thumbsup.gif
I'll have to skip Roy's Peak for now since most of the review I've seen says that it is quite challenging ,and I can't imagine taking the risk with my partner in the winter period. bye.gif

Okay thanks.
How about the revision below?.
Basically, I pushed the Milford Sound cruise to Day5, thus allowing me to stop at Queenstown first, then slowly head to Te Anau area the following day.
I might have to head out early as well from Henry Creek Camp since I'm booking the 9.45am ship there.

Day3- 23Aug:
Kea Point Track for sunrise
Stop by Queenstown
Camp Twenty Five Mile Stream close to Mt Creighton

Day 4- 24Aug:
Leisure Drive to Te Anau
Glowworm Cave at night.
Camp at Henry Creek DOC

Day5- 25Aug:
Milford Cruise
Leisure drive to Queenstown
Camp at Lake Hayes

About Fox Glacier Skydive, it is on my 'Must-do list', however I don't think I'm willing to sacrifice the remaining days of my trip if I were to put it at the beginning of my trip.
Nevertheless ,Day10 is actually my buffer day for the skydive, at the expense of Arthurs Pass that is (hopefully not)

Just to update, currently campervan-ing at Lake Hayes, with everything going great so far.

Tips for those driving campervan up to Milford Sound, get to the campsite along the way before sunset or settle down at Te Anau.
Did the night glowworm cave tour, then decide to camp as close to Milford at night(initial plan was deer flat campsite).......GOD how I underestimated the road.
After long and slow 2hours drive and 4 empty DOC camp deep in the dark woods, finally manage to camp at Cascades creek.
And then there's that last stretch close to Milford Sound.

Tip 2: check out Wilderness NZ app, it shows the map and review to most of campsite available.

Hi guys,

I have looked through some of your replies and your itineraries, decided to come out with something as below. Need your expert opinions please hehe. biggrin.gif Thank youuuu

9/1/2018
Arrive from Auckland to CHC at 0945am. Collect campervan from Wilderness.
CHC –  Spitfire Square Countdown (grocery) - Arthur’s Pass - Hokitika – camp at Otto/Macdonalds DOC Park on the way to Fran Josef
• Can have meals in Sunset Point, Hokitika

10/1/2018
Hokitika – stop by Lake Matheson – Wanaka

11/1/2018
Wanaka – Te Anau – Camp at Henry Creek Camping Ground

12/1/2018
Rise and shine early morning to Milford Sound (2.5 hours drive) – Milford Cruise (1045am ; 190NZD) – Queenstown – Camp at Queenstown Lakeview/Creeksyde Holiday Park.

13/1/2018
Explore Queenstown. Early morning for Fergburger (8am). Have lunch in Skyline Queenstown.

14/1/2018
Queenstown – Lake Pukaki – Mt. Cook

15/1/2018
Mt. Cook – Lake Takepo – CHC (put up a night)

16/1/2018
Return Campervan and fly back to Auckland

Is this better? We are planning to do skydiving as well but not sure if we will have the time to do it in Wanaka..
*
IMHO, the first day appears to be slightly too tight.
Note that you will spend at least 1 ~ 2 hours at Wilderness office while waiting for documentation and briefing on your campervan.
And Arthurs Pass + West Coast Highway road can be quite a challenge to drive especially since it your first day there as it goes through long and winding mountain road.

Queenstown main area itself is actually a small place, however most of the activity (ie. skydiving, skiing, bungy) is based there. So depending on your plan, you might be able to slow down a little for the Milford Sound trip back to Queenstown to enjoy the view.

** Tips : There is small boat bar called Perky's Floating Bar right infront of the lake facing Queenstown which allow you to bring in your own food there (one of the best spot to consume your huge Fergburger) thumbsup.gif

Recently I renewed my driving licence using myeg and received the laminated one. Is it accepted at NZ?

My another question is our flight is plan to depart 11.55pm. If I bought 2 meals then when they will serve them?
*
do they still give the laminated one for the driver's licences now? confused.gif
if you mean the hard like the IC one, yea it is accepted in NZ.

Thank you for your advice. Will look into these.

Do you suggest then that I just stop at Hokitika for Day 1 and not go further?
*
Due to the time constrain you have, I think you can try to push it until Otto Campsite if you are not tired.
You can also consider other Free* DOC Campsite option such as Lake Lanthe Matahi or Lake Mahinapua (*assume you are getting the 7-Days DOC Campsite pass).

You are renting a campervan, so you get to decide where you want to rest flex.gif

Pardon me I not quite understand the concept of free camping. If it is free then why must we buy the 7 days pass?

Or they actually have 2 categories. Free DOC campsite (which need to buy the pass) and another one is totally free?

What facilities usually have at those free DOC campsites?
*
From what I understand, there are 3 type of campsite :
1.) Freedom camping - Mostly only certificate self-contained campervan with the small blue sticker is allowed to do this. Technically has nothing.
2.) DOC Campsite - Site that usually need some small payment(NZD6pp - NZD18pp), or free with campsite pass. Typical has toilet , some has kitchen. Type of camping allowed depends on site (Campervan, tent , etc.)
3.) Private Campsite - Usually powered Campsite, has various facilities & service.

Do authorities in Nz have strict rules regarding drone usage? Other than airport, are there any prohibited area?
*
Most of the main tourist area SI has the no-drone signboard up. (I saw them at Mt Cook, Lake Matheson , Milford Sound).
And there are many small airport scattered around the island as well.
But there are also places typically with little to no people around. thumbsup.gif

Manage to fly my Spark at a few times while I was there earlier in Aug.
But what was captured in the picture can never replicate what can be seen through your own eyes there wink.gif

Basically, yea. But do use the typical drone safety rules.

Just included to places to overnight in my itinerary. Any major thing which I overlooked in terms of distance and feasibility?

9/1/2018
CHC –  Spitfire Square Countdown (grocery) - Arthur’s Pass - Hokitika – camp at Otto/Macdonalds DOC Park.

10/1/2018
Hokitika – Lake Matheson – Wanaka – Sky Diving – Lake Hawea Holiday Park

11/1/2018
Wanaka - Te Anau – Camp at Henry Creek Camping Ground

12/1/2018
Rise and shine early morning to Milford Sound (2.5 hours drive) – Milford Cruise (1045am ; 190NZD) – Queenstown – Camp at Queenstown Creeksyde Holiday Park.

13/1/2018
Explore Queenstown. Early morning for Fergburger (8am). Have lunch in Skyline Queenstown. Camp at Crown Range Summit

14/1/2018
Queenstown – Lake Pukaki – Mt. Cook (White Horse Hill Camping Ground)

15/1/2018
Mt. Cook – Hooker valley track - Lake Takepo – CHC (North South Holiday Park)

16/1/2018
Return Campervan – Airport – Auckland - KL

If excluding cost for campervan and DOC passes, is NZD2000 sufficient for 2 pax?

Thank you!
*
biggrin.gif you will be covering a crazy amount of distance per day, but given the duration you have, I think it's already the best taking into account that you covered mainly those major activity.
I'm also curious see what other more frequent visitor's opinion on this though, since it during the peak of summer period.

Cost wise, IMHO NZD2000 should be workable for food, groceries and diesel for a week. Remember to bring some Maggie over. (nothing beats eating a nice Maggie Curry while looking up the beautiful NZ skyline thumbsup.gif ) .
Other than that, you might want to see which skydiving package are you taking at Wanaka.

Car or campervan?.
Depending on which part of Malaysia you've actually drove before, but generally the difference is :

1.) ALOT of single lane road/highway.
2.) Petrol Station is not so common at many place.
3.) Road can be pretty dark at night.
4.) Priority for Pedestrian Crossing
5.)
ONE
LANE
BRIDGE
6.) Enjoy the entire view icon_rolleyes.gif

Hi Sifus of NZ,

Would like to ask if the below itinerary is doable / too rush? planning to rent a car so I guess need to book my accommodation soon. I am going in March 2018! biggrin.gif

Day 1: Arrive Auckland
Day 2: Auckland to Queenstown (Explore Glenorchy, climb Mount Alfred)
Day 3: Queenstown to Te Anau (Fiordland National Park, Lake Te Anau, Glowworm Cave)
Day 4: Te Anau to Milford Sound (after Milford cruise, will drive to Wanaka)
Day 5: Explore Wanaka (probably evening drive to Franz Josef)
Day 6: Franz Josef Glacier
Day 7: Franz Josef to Wanaka (stop by Blue pools walk, mount iron walkway)
Day 8: Wanaka to Mount Cook
Day 9: Mount Cook to Tekapo
Day 10: Tekapo to Kaikoura
Day 11: Kaikoura to Christchurch (flight back to Auckland at night)
Day 12: Fly back to KL

Still thinking should slot in the skydiving on which place? Probably will do at Franz Josef.

Hope to get all your feedback soon smile.gif smile.gif
*
1.) The Franz Josef trip seems a little odd since it's a little out of the way there.
And IMO, the road from Wanaka to the west coast (especially Haast area) is quite challenging to drive at late evening.
Depending on what attracts you there in the first place, I put this place as "backup" plan instead. You might consider Fox Glacier as well.

2.) The drive Milford Sound to Wanaka seems a little too much. Either you'll be too rushing to enjoy the view along the way, or too tired once you reach Wanaka.
My suggestion would be to stop at area close to Queenstown/Arrowtown for a rest, and get up early for a drive to Wanaka (then again, if you plan to go to Franz Josef, that would mean you'll be driving a total of 700km within that two day.).

3.) Your plan seems more suitable with a Campervan brows.gif

Appreciate your feedback!

Mainly to Franz glacier for the hike and also skydiving. Am thinking to do it at Fox Glacier

Campervan is a little bit overbudget sad.gif
*
the problem with going to either Fox Glacier or Franz Josef is that almost all of their activity there are weather dependent.

biggrin.gif didn't do much research for Motel/Camping last time, so it might have it's perks there!
So do share all your plannings and findings here so that I can use it for my next trip smile.gif

I find the drive in Haast to be OK. The drive from Fox Glacier to Franz Jozef was much more challenging.

Btw @rush25, try to include Lake Matheson as well if you do get to Fox Glacier township.
*
I was caught in a bad weather on my trip to Fox Glacier earlier.
Tried driving from Queenstown to Fox Glacier in a day, but decided to stop and camp at Lake Paringa as it was getting dark and misty to drive while I was at Haast.

Visited Lake Matheson twice as the first day there was very cloudly.
But on the 2nd day... drool.gif

not sure when is your travel period , but there should be plenty of choices for motorhomes/campervan for you to choose from (Wilderness, Jucy , Mighty , Maui, Britz etc.)

Just wondering, when you camp at Lake Hayes with your campervan, how did you move around to go to QT town area?
*
there is a campervan carpark at Boundary Street , which is just walking distance from the main town area.
