just back from Milford Sound Cruise, for me it is doesn't worth the money, given visited to Li Qiang and Halong Bay.
- you can see seal colony from Cape Foulwind, MSC give you much closer distance but still not close as you can touch them. to me no different
- the waterfall even yesterday had rain but not impressive as our lata kinjang waterfall
- basically the cruise scenery... hmmmmmmmm nothing much to say because it is just typical mountain view with trees and rock
I not recommend drive all the way just for the cruise, given grow worm cave you can see it elsewhere
i rather skip MSC in my itinerary

the scenic drive...... nothing much to see also, just the big land of grasses and the mirror lake (where you can get an awesome @ lake Matheson), dun waste the petrol and that 3hr driving, i rather choose to sleep @ coach

i rate mangrove river cruise @ langkawi better sightseeing than this MSC
if you still insist to
just MSC
i suggest take coach from Queenstown, the bus will stop at interest spot along the journey. you can have more rest time and save petrol money

MSC + growworm cave
suggest take MSC around 2pm, where you can drive from dunedin or some other place from 9am, overnight @ Te Anau, check out then go to grow worm cave

for those who interest to drive to Milford Sound, please spare extra 30mins,
- you need to walk 500m (which is 10mins) to the visitor centre (the port)
- almost at the last part of the road is all down slope + curve road, generally you're driving at 30 km/h only for like 15km

biggrin.gif Milford Sound is often a hit or miss due to the weather condition there.
Most of the nice picture taken there are usually during a clear day (or night) when the water is more calm.
But I do agree that on a normal day, the scenery is just..normal (maybe cause we are too used to see lake and mountain closeby ie. Phuket,Langkawi etc.)
I do find the drive especially the last part to be quite exciting though rclxm9.gif

btw, in the end did you take the campervan or car for your trip?

Maybe we can give better suggestion if you could share some additional detail like :

1.) Have you bought the flight ticket to/fro ?
2.) Any must-do attraction? (usually main reason heading there)
3.) Campervan or car?

1. After surveying the routes, we decided to stick to our initial plan to fly to Auckland as we did not find any direct flight from KL to Christchurch. We do not want those long layovers at Singapore or Australia. We prefer to go to hotel and have a good sleep after landing at Auckland Airport. Hence, we have purchased our return direct flight tickets KL-Auckland-KL.  We yet to purchase the domestic flight tickets as we yet to finalize our itinerary.

2. The main aim of this Summer December trip is for our honeymoon and birthday celebration. My husband and I are nature lovers - some trekking/hiking activities, or to having a picnic nearby those scenic lakes. Perhaps some painting activities, my hobby.  I am a fan of LOTR, hence we will go to Queenstown for its shooting locations.

3. We will rent a car.

Thank you. biggrin.gif

Agree with adele123, if there is no plan to Kaikoura (north) , or Authur's Pass ( west ), it would be best to go straight to Queenstown frm Akl.

Based on your interest, you can try arranging more days at Wanaka (for Lake Wanaka + Roy's Peak ) & Queenstown/Glenorchy.

Suggest only to drive down to Te Anau if you want to check out the glowworm cave or the Doubtful Sound. ( or nightview at Milford Sound smile.gif ). If no, just take the 1 day tour from Queenstown will do.

Also is transit visa required?

Thanks smile.gif

confirm 100% need.

Learned the hard way when AA wouldn't let me check-in luggage at KLIA2 for KL-Sydney-CHC (AA + Jetstar) flight.
On the bright side,I also found out it'll only take around less than 2hours to get it approved online. blush.gif
