Yes and no. It depends on the video chain.

I have seen cases (ie Onkyo 875 Reon chip) where it alters the colour space and messes up the luminance of the colours. I have not seen it effect grayscale but if the implementation of the video chip is wrong and there is a bug there is a possibility that it can be wrong. The same bug can theoretically happen anywhere in a display, BD player, HTPC or a AVR.

What I normally do is do the grayscale in 1080p/24Hz and double check it with 1080p/60Hz to see if there are problems.

basic calibration can be done quickly with test pattern without equipment such as brightness and contrast. This you can do first and redo again after 200 hours. As for greyscale, gamma and color tuning, better wait for 200 hours before tuning as it is very time consuming and cost you $$$ if you ask someone with the equipment to do it. If you ask me, I think the calibration alone worth at least RM500 for the service. For a tv, you need to tune for different input so that's min 2-3 hours of time spend. It's not just the equipment but the knowledge to get it done. I don't think an average joe know how to really tune the tv in depth. I spend almost 5 years in avsforum to learn calibration from those ISF certified sifu. The very first version I use is an Excel spreadsheet and it's a pain to use as Colorfact at that time cost USD6.5k. Now is more affordable with Calman + i1Pro around RM 2k plus.
