i decided to go to maxis service centre at taman tun..after talking to a nice lady there.she mentioned to me, whenever any wireless connection is low, even the signals on the iphne shows 2 bar, it will automatically switch n connect to 3g service to surf the net smoothly. it must be 3 full bar for you not being charged using the wireless.. then i ask her, how bout if i have disconnected the 3g service (remember wat i did on the previous month) n she replied an answer that shocked to me mentioning that, even though u have dscnncted the 3g service, because the phone is 'so' intelligent, it will automatically enable the 3g that has been disconnected and connect to net through the service..so disconnecting ur 3g service is not a solution.thats y we have data package for contract phne (cehh). By the way, i cant see any termination of 3g service for ur accounts since may 2008 (damn you 1st maxis guy. he didnt terminate the 3g)...
*
NOT TRUE. once disable, the 3G will not self enable back. It is probably GPRS that is trigger when the wifi signal is low. Can see by the signal 'o' , instead of 3G , besides the carrier logo.

3g usage will increase even those u off the edge/3g but it only increase very very little....

i'm on unlimited plan cause 3gb not even enough cause i'm heave user.... in a week i can used up to 4gb that stated in iphone but as we not iphone usage r not accurate....

so for those who din use unlimited plan pls bear in mind always off ur 3g or edge, non-jailbreak iphone user have to becareful...
*
4GB / week is ok if you Tethering. Seriously, i find it hard to reach my 30GB of data per month without Tethering.

what is the point of having a smartphone if there is no 24/7 connection doh.gif ... quite a number of apps require your location to be pin-point, for example when you looking for a petrol station/restaurant/clinic/ bus stop ..etc ...in the vicinity.

@kakikukaku,
tnsai oredi answered ur question.  Put in a fake APN or a fake profile to disable data services.

@Mackiddo,
When on earth are U?  U have 30GB limit of data usage on your mobile ?! That certainly is a huge amount!
*
I'm in Sg. Under corporate users which is heavily subsidised for the phone and data plan. Almost 1/4 of the company employees using iPhone.

u use the data service right after u get the phone and insert the sim card?

i get on friday 8pm and the staff told me my i data plan 1 only activated after 12 pm on saturday ... before 12pm is pay per use, which is 1Mb = RM10
*
i don't understand why the telco can't simply activate the data plan together with the sim card.

now...u pay 88...u still can get connect(they wont cut), again threshold 3GB, once u exceed, speed remains...but u now pay for all the extra u used after 3GB
*
easier for the telco to make $$$ this way, instead of just reducing the speed rclxms.gif

Guys, the earlier method didn't work. The data usage is still increasing even I had changed all the apn settings inclusive of the mms as well.
What else is there to do now? Can someone pls guide me?
*
be prepared to pay a bomb for the usage. Maybe you could consider signing up for a data package or ask the telco to 'blacklist' you on data usage ?

Perhaps if that's the case, u should feedback to Steve...telling him to release a strip-down version of iphone....
iPhone nano....no data, GSM only, all people need is app/game that don access internet, and the fancy touchscreen biggrin.gif

*
there's not much apps that doesn't access internet. Maybe in future Apple will find a way to block the 3G/GPRS from being DISABLE, after all, the user will only enjoy the true capabilities of iphone using their apps by going online.

There's already 1mb data download in 1 day. It'll be around RM10 I think for 1MB. I really need help now. Nobody is having the same problem as I am? Everybody is with data plans? Will jailbreak to install sbsettings help solve this problem?
I just wonder why after changing the apn settings, it is still possible for the phone to connect..
*
yup, 1mb = rm10 . you could launch safari to try if you are still connected after you adjust the setting nod.gif

did u guys check your carier version...? setting>general>about , as mentioned in a thread, that apn thingy setting only work with Maxis 4.0....mine was 4.0 before, just now i checked mine already become 5.0, so the apn thing doesn't work anymore...now im trying to restore to factory setting and see how thinhs going
*
means Maxis have done something on their site to 'auto-configure' the iPhone setting. How smart of them smile.gif .. instead of spending a lot time teaching their users how to configure it rclxms.gif

That's what u thought. After changing almost everything I could think of, the data is still downloading. The apn settings doesn't change even if u set it to some fake apn. Something else needs to be done which i'm not sure what that is right now.
*

you don't think that is smart ? Auto enable the data setting, throw a few clueless ppl to handle the technical hotline and then by the time you all figure out a way to disable it (not that i'm awared of a way to do it), 10mb-20mb probably goes down the drain. and that's another rm100-rm200 for them ohmy.gif

any other alternate way now?
*
i don't think you could 'down-grade' the carrier version since it's been done at the telco side ?

if you have the dough to get an iPhone might as well get a data plan. Digi is having a special promo, RM40 and Maxis came out with a 500MB data plan @ RM58. that's around rm2 a day! cheap!

data package completes your iPhone! power sial!
*
cheap ? you still dunno what cheap is. SGD$7 (RM17) for 50GB data/month. Now that's CHEAP !

Got one question here. I already disable all my 3G, Data Roaming and Location Services.

So far, from day 1 until last month, my phone bill just like usual, i just paid for all the calls and smses.

But this month, i found out there is another charges due to internet data usage which cost me around RM170.

FYI, i bought my iphone from Maxis thru prepaid package on end of JUL-09

Anyone face this problem before? Is there any problem with my phone?
*
data could come in by 2 ways, 3G or EDGE/gprs. You disable 3G but you never disable EDGE/gprs. Some Maxis users are having problem disabling the EDGE/gprs since Maxis upgrade theirs to version 5 from version 4 a few days back. The best solution is to call Maxis to 'ban/suspend' you from their data usage.

that function is for turning off data roaming when you are overseas. as you are still beginner, suggest you read back some of the post 1st and stop giving irrelevant answer.

*
a lot of ppl before this have tried and failed. the only solution is to call Maxis to block/cancel the data.

Got a question... I'm using idata 2 now.. which is 500 mb per month...
I bought my phone at 28 of Dec.... So the data plan starts on that day itself right?
*
NO. It starts from the time they inform you which is roughly a couple of days from the time you collect the phone. if not, call them up.

only telcos on the Apple approved list can do tethering. For others, you will need to JB

Just wanna share.

I been an iphone user for about 6 months now. Not having the problem until a weeks ago when I notice my prepaid goes down the drain in a jiffy. Imagine RM100 in a day!! wtf. Why only after 6 month this thing happened? To me a smartphone should do what the user wants instead of what the telco wants ie your money... Just my 2 cent.

Now I tried SB and fakeAPN after reading this thread. Don't know if it gonna work but I'll keep my fingers crossed!
*
Maxis just updated their Carrier version not long ago, the smart phone become 'super-smart', auto configure to connect to the net rclxms.gif . Telcos didn't not install all the apps for you, you did it yourself, so it's not the telcos fault.
There is a downside installing SB, you battery will drain faster nod.gif

don get it wrong, 3G is the speed u get, not the amount of data
it get ur data download faster....onli if u access a lot data....
so ur key is not to turn on 3G more (u can always on, or turn on onli when u need it), but to use data access more rclxms.gif
*
agreed. why would anyone use EDGE instead of 3G, unless they are not clear on the concept of data usage.
