Hi!

I'm not working in Singapore yet but I'm getting some offers to work at there. I would like to ask, is it really a good opportunity to work in Singapore?
*
You have to ask yourself why apply to Singapore in the first place?

But if your company decided to send you here, what you've got to lose?

guys,

just a question, will it be wise to include your side business in your resume? Recently I was promoting my drinks at a flea market at sunway lagoon club and the MD of Sunway Lagoon Club & HR like my entreprenurial spirit and suggested that I send him my resume cause he knows that I am an auditor from Singapore.

Not sure will it show my potential employer that I am dedicated, resources, ambitious and entreprising aside from Sunway?

If the resume is intended for a general business management job (eg. MD, GM, Biz Development etc of a business or business unit), then yes. They are looking for someone with wider outlook, experiences and skillset. In many cases, the remuneration can match whatever profits a personal business can generate (adjusted for lower risk, of course), so they are not afraid of you suddenly leaving them to run your own business.

If it's for a line or operational job like dept manager, process leader etc... I wouldn't include it. Best case is it'll suggest that a line job is just a stepping stone until you're ready to leave. Worst case is that it'll suggest that you'll not give 100% effort to the job and are a high risk for possible conflicts of interest.

True,
Perhaps i'll just leave that detail out, anyways, nothing spectacular.

wseng,

Tuas & Jurong is like the other part of Singapore, about an hour's drive from town (Raffles Place).

In terms of accommodation, you can try Jurong itself, or Choa Chu Kang. I think the areas around there are pretty decent (400-500 per common room).

Food are aplenty around any HDB neighbourhood, so that should be the least of your concern.

You can always shop at Fairprice NTUC, again, you should have one in your neighbourhood.

Has anyone been actively looking for a job during the period?

A lot of my peers are resigning without a job this quarter and finding it hard to secure a post in any of the banks.

The other day, my junior was interviewing one of the HR personnel and he mentioned that they've received 400 over application for a post of Finance Manager and out of that, 100 plus were applicants from my company. I was dumbfolded!

I've just tested the market recently (last saturday) and to date, yet to receive any interview offer. Gosh, this is freaking me out.

Sigh, I thought after 3 years in audit and a PR would be easier to secure a job in Singapore.

Why so many ppl loves to work in the banks nowadays? Mind to share?
*
General perception is that bank pays better than MNC or Big 4.

Secondly, the opportunity for an account/finance trained is pretty limited in a MNC, for example in a construction MNC (you can only rotate between HR/FINANCE/ACCOUNTS or TREASURY depart), as compared to banks (Credit Admin, Credit Control, Credit Review, Corporate Finance, Credit Card, Loan, Mortgage and etc).

Thirdly, looks better on the resume and things are more organised in a bigger organisation where there are protocols for everything (No Chinaman style).

Btw, noone LOVES to work in a bank but just prefer working in one.

I'd prefer to buy sg share as compared to msia. The share price of sg companies is more volatile so, good for short-term investor. But if you are risk averse, then perhaps you should go for Msia share. Not to say that Msia share is good for long term but at least the fluctuation is minimal (or so i think).

Should try US market though, my bf is a hardcore investor (small timer la), he would wake up at 3am in the morning to sell his share, but be prepared to get burnt too when you cant exit the market fast enough when the share plunge.

If you convert your license in JB or nearer to the causeway, the JPJ would cut off your Msia license, and you can no longer drive Msian registered cars.

A lot ppl would go back to KL or somewhere further where the rules of conversion is rather grey, get a letter/transcript from JPJ to certify your driving record in Msia and try not let them get hold of your driving license.

QUOTE(seantang @ Oct 18 2009, 08:42 PM)
It was a rhetorical question. Which is why I don't think JPJ destroys your licence.

I have colleagues who have both SG and MY licences. Their MY licences can be renewed no problem. But all of them converted more than 4 years ago.

I have obtained the JPJ extract twice. 4 and 3 years ago. Both times JPJ blacklisted my MY licence but return it to me unmolested. I returned the extract to JPJ both times to get my MY licence de-blacklisted because I didn't go through with the conversion.

That's why I'm a little bit surprised to hear that JPJ now destroys your Malaysian licence when they issue you the extract. Anyway, I'll be visiting JPJ in Ipoh the next time I'm back to get yet another extract (I can't resist buying a car anymore), so I'll update you guys then.

Till then though, I really don't think that I'll be forced to walk home and leave my car behind at JPJ after getting the extract.
*
Blacklist? Perhaps that was few years back, anyways, my bf just converted his license 2 years ago and he wasnt blacklisted or anything cause he asked for the transcript in KL.

Whereas his colleague was rm200-rm250 poorer when he requested for a transcript in JB. The JB officer insists that he surrender/cut off (literally cut off into two pieces) his license unless he pay up.

Btw, if i am not wrong, the JPJ extract has no expiry date, why are you getting it thrice?

Okay guys, I just need an answer to the below, I dont care I hold a Singaporean licence or Malaysian licence as long as I can perform the following:-

1) Drive a Singapore car in Singapore
2) Drive a Malaysian car in Singapore
3) Drive a Singapore car in Malaysia
4) Drive a Malaysian car in Malaysia

So, am I be able to do the above????
*
You definitely cant drive a Malaysian car in Singapore regardless you have a Msian license or Sg license if you are holding a EP pass. So option number 2 is out of the question.

As for the rest, like what I've mentioned earlier, get your transcript from KL or some ulu places where the JPJ officer has got no clue of the convertion ruling. And if they don't ask, dun try be a smartass and tell them that you want to convert to sg license.

hm, looking at all the discussion above made me have one question in my mind. If I go to Singapore re-take their driving test (from A-Z), can pass, then I will be issued a Singapore driving license right? It's not converting. I still have my Malaysia Driving License. Of course, it is much more troublesome and time-consuming.

Can this way works?
*
You might want to think twice of re-taking driving lesson in Singapore. It is sooo much of hassle and can an expensive affair too. I have colleagues who took a year or so to get their license.

Just pay the process fee (if the JPJ threaten to confiscate/cut off your license), or simply dont convert if you have no plans to buy a car in singapore.
