QUOTE(vorchiel @ Jul 26 2009, 12:42 PM) o hai my sis' ps3 (cechk06 msian set) suddenly doesnt have any audio output. tested both with composite & hdmi cable & resetting the display, using 2 beeps thingy and manually from xmb but still no sound. bought around oct-nov last year and she havent registered for warranty at the sony msia website. any procedure for warranty? can i register now? it is way over the 30-day since it is bought. thanks in advance update: got it back from sony centre. over the phone, my sis said that the sony representative told her that her ps3 has been repaired and they changed some board (circuit board?) inside the ps3. however, when my sis went to collect it, she was told that the only thing they did was doing a updating it to the latest firmware (it was on 2.76) and also a factory reset. lol inconsistencies.

during the earlier ps3 lifecycle, all firmware are stored in the nand flash
now, they use both nand and hdd, maybe due to newer models have less nand than the earlier models.
if bricked during the flashing, i've read that sony themselves cant repair and theyll just give a new console/refurb unit. no source btw. no pandora for ps3 to unbrick like psp

internal hdd is uniquely encrypted to work only in the console that encrypt/format it. other ps3 cant read internal hdd from another ps3 unless it is reformatted by the new ps3.
of course, the contents can still be accessed by re-login & redownloading using the psn id that 'owns' it. this is where the 5-slot activation comes into play

QUOTE(dattebayo @ Sep 26 2009, 12:33 PM) my question is what happen when power blackout occurs during firmware update? can it be recovered? if that can result in unrecoverable brick, then it will be much more returned units for PS3 than Xbox 360, I quite worry that also, coz TNB you know, sometimes people steal a cable nearby the power box, also result in power failure. All in all, Sony shouldn't make a system so fragile if that's the case there were reports of bricking caused by power outage during the flashing. i am not aware of any fallback or failsafe mechanism to protect from this issue. maybe it has been patched in newer fw, maybe it hasnt. i cant say for certain. bear in mind that ps3 is not designed for malaysian market in the first place.
