having difficulty to choose my next lense too.

18-135..dont waste your money on that.. better take nikon 18-70 around rm600-700 2nd hand or nikon 18-105VR around rm8xx-rm900 2nd hand or almost new. all below rm1k.

you have several options :

1. Sell kit lens and get 18-105VR (get VR at 18-105 range but a bit longer MFD)
2. Keep kit lens and get 55-200VR (but your kitlens doesnt have VR & need to change lenses)
3. Keep kit lens and get this if you want zoom till 300mm. Try looking at Sigma OR Tamron 70-300. It's around rm7xx-8xx NEW. But these lenses DO NOT have VR so it's really a problem at ranges 200mm and above. Nikon 70-300VRii is really good but more expensive.

For people who have more budget: Nikon 18-200VRii, Tamron 18-270VC (impossible to find 2nd hand), Sigma 18-250 OS HSM

But if you're still itching to buy something, then buy this first.  Definitely much cheaper than any lens and will provide soothing relief.

get the 55-200VR and not the non VR version.
55-200NON-Vr - smaller & got petal shaped hood and 55-200VR longer & got full rounded type hood.

yes it's sharp and for a lens that cheap i'm impressed. owned it before. 2nd hand. the VR is really useful and i would say much better than tamron/sigma 70-300.

55-200VR is not heavy lar.. 70-200 f2.8 VR like in my avatar yeah heavy..

What do you guys really want? An all in one or several lenses that go up to 105mm, 200mm or 300mm?

But i do need to remind you that 18-200vr / 18-105vr has a longer mfd..u guys know what im talking about right?

1. Either take 18-105VR and sell kitlens
2. Keep kitlens and get 55-200VR...

the advantage of option 1: VR throughout 18-105mm range
the advantage of option 2: get longer reach up to 200mm

if you want 18-200..there's also options from tamron and sigma that are cheaper...

18200VR is 3.5-5.6 but tamron/sigma 18200 is 3.5-6.3 so it will be slower on AF because the smaller aperture at tele end.

if you want faster AF dont get the tamron because the built in motor is slow, get the sigma 18200 with HSM + OS. HSM same as AF-S speed. OS is same like VR

i saw one new sigma 18200 os hsm rm1550..

one of the last few pics taken using my d40 + 35mm lens before i sold it...
quite happy with the result considered that i play with d40 only around 2 weeks and in fact, on two weekends only...

with lightroom and Adobe bridge, raw process is much easier. can browse in raw.

now kev's d40 is with me.
