I am thinking of buying a PS3 but the main purpose is to watch Bluray and DVD (the "local" type...)
The PS3 is the cheapest Bluray player in town (almost... as Samsung now selling at 1.3k) for the time being and also got wifi !

My problem :
1 Some people tell me that if you watch "local" DVD the PS3 lens will fail within 3 to 6 months
2 Other tell me no problem (this group are usually the shops/sellers)

Please, from your experince give me advice. 80% watch "local" DVD 20% watch Bluray

Thanks.

If someone is buying a PS3 only to watch movies, it will give you a clue of his/her aptitude and age group wouldn't it ?
Btw I am an "Uncle" and not to clever with viddeo conversion/format. Just want a Cheap Bluray and ALSO can watch "local" DVD.

The PS3 sounds like the perfect answer until I hear that the lens is "sensitive/fragile" and using it for DVD will cause it to fail in 3 to 6 months.

TRUE or FALSE ? Appreciate those willing to help with their knowledge.

zerko: We all get what we pay for uncle..

What I will say is not all disc are created equal.

If all you intend to do is watch movies then I would suggest just get a DVD player and no on a BD diet.

All the best on your puchase.

guysss. just tell him the fact laa... since he want reason:

Why play pirate DVD will spoil your ps3?... U "uncle" really to know why???

1. Pirated disc not follow the original specification, Pirated one a lot thinner than original dvd. So ps3 lens need to do more work and stress alot when read this pirated dvd.

2. People who sell this pirated stuff never care if ur ps3 got spoil or not... they just want sell their dvd. So they even burn the dvd at wrong disc speed like 48X oo 52 x.. while oroginal follow all the spec at 32x .... so ur ps3 lens absoulutely will be spoilt if u play pirated dvd....and stop supporting pirated stuff..for god sake...

3. All pirated dvd dun have any quality control, so ur ps3 will harm alot alot alot alot alot then malfunction.. then u can hooray... i destroy my ps3.!!

4. If u see people say movie at pasar malam sell blueray... thats fake.. they not even blueray... it just dvd9... since no piracy company dare to pirated movie from original blueray because of its high cost and expensive equipments.. blank blueray cost rm 60.... if at pasar malam they said this blueray... they just manage to cheat u... and u bragging that they manage to fool u enuff. Even its true they sell blueray, pirated one would cost rm 70.....just buy original...only rm 90++

5. Since u already know, it will harm ur lens... but if u still persisit to play all the pirated one... yeahh.. please please go on... and i hope u understand later day.

So.. this is the fact that u want to know...

No offence,, i just need u to know.... its really gonna spoil ur lens and ps3.....and each time the lens broken... it cost u rm 200 -- rm 300 for repair... unless u very rich person that can repair the lens each 3 month..

That is why I am asking lah...
If DVD quality no good how does it affect the lens ??? Won't it be just cannot read. Like if your CD or DVD scratch and you put it in your PC DVD Drive it will just not read and not spoil the DVD drive (from my experience anyway...)

Anybody knows why ??
