I am thinking of buying a PS3 but the main purpose is to watch Bluray and DVD (the "local" type...) The PS3 is the cheapest Bluray player in town (almost... as Samsung now selling at 1.3k) for the time being and also got wifi !
My problem : 1 Some people tell me that if you watch "local" DVD the PS3 lens will fail within 3 to 6 months 2 Other tell me no problem (this group are usually the shops/sellers)
Please, from your experince give me advice. 80% watch "local" DVD 20% watch Bluray
Thanks.

QUOTE(colt_508 @ May 9 2009, 02:59 PM) cuz convert the video.. and store in ur PS3 easy as a pie If someone is buying a PS3 only to watch movies, it will give you a clue of his/her aptitude and age group wouldn't it ? Btw I am an "Uncle" and not to clever with viddeo conversion/format. Just want a Cheap Bluray and ALSO can watch "local" DVD. The PS3 sounds like the perfect answer until I hear that the lens is "sensitive/fragile" and using it for DVD will cause it to fail in 3 to 6 months. TRUE or FALSE ? Appreciate those willing to help with their knowledge.

QUOTE(colt_508 @ May 9 2009, 05:42 PM) and dun open a thread.. complaining PS3 lens problem later on.. cuz we warn uncle already That is why I am asking lah... If DVD quality no good how does it affect the lens ??? Won't it be just cannot read. Like if your CD or DVD scratch and you put it in your PC DVD Drive it will just not read and not spoil the DVD drive (from my experience anyway...) Anybody knows why ??

QUOTE(Mgsrulz @ May 9 2009, 06:16 PM) played pirated discs on my ps3 a few times,no problems encountered. That is what is confusing me.... some say OK some say NOT ok. My questions is if DVD not good then problem will be cannot read only. Some say play "local" DVD can destroy lens - that is what I don't understand. Maybe PS3 got special software to detect "local" DVD and destroy Lens ????
