I prefer video to books. I have trouble learning from books, even school textbooks tongue.gif. I prefer visual stimulus.

Bro Layman, you have a classical or acoustic right now? See what music you like. But fingerpicking =/= classical guitar. Acoustic also can pick. Wah, which guitar sounds better is very subjective. I like the 'mellow' sound of classical strings but prefer the general sound of a good acoustic. I like lots of bass, hehe. But you can get classical sound on acoustic, sort of lah, get Silk and Steel strings.

I can't read musical notation even if someone offer me $$$. So I rely on tab. There are also programs to 'play' the tab for you. I think someone called music notes 'taugeh', hehe.

Well if you like finger-picking, finger-pick. I like strumming but I do fingerpicking too. Always kena that question in guitar stores. But my technique limited to hammer-ons only. Cannot do pull offs.

Youtube always has good lessons. I learned the riff to 'Wonderwall' from there. But my favourite site is this one :

http://grahamchoo.blogspot.com

Mainly Christian music but there are good contemporary music lessons too.

Try learning 'Time of Your Life' from Green Day. I can send you the chords I wrote for it if you want. The beginner song thread also good for suggestions.

I agree with u, sir nod.gif In fact I do reckon the best is when thr is a tutor at side n teach. At least the tutor can advice or suggest when things is goin wrong. Books can give u in a form of reference. Due my parents strong believe I would able 2 learn through net, I ve never met a tutor n I dun ve the intention 2 against n fight over my parents decision

Then I still gotta play more a while to discover it. But taugeh notes is seriously hard to learn, well, not so, just that didnt ve much time to give much effort in studying it. Meaning in the end I should stick 2 finger-picking 1st. Acoustic plays a more crisper sound while classical play a bit more soft tone sound. Thats wat I found out of so far.

Thanks mate 4 providing this link. I appreciate it. Hopefully I'll able 2 make some progress from it. thumbup.gif notworthy.gif

Well I didn't listen to my parents and ended up with crap teachers. Sometimes parents have this sixth sense hehehe.

Whatever you feel comfortable with. I hate taugeh notes too. The first paper I ever failed in sekolah rendah was Music heh.

Glad to be of service bro nod.gif

Taugeh/sheet music is the same as everything else - comes with practice. There is no way around it - you have to get "theory" books and read it, do exercises, etc. You don't need a guitar to do it, and once you learn it, it's applicable to any instrument!

It just takes some time and dedication on your part to learn it. Don't worry about sight reading for now, just learn how to read it and then apply it. As you get better at reading it, you can move on to sight reading while playing.

The upside to tabs are that they are easy to learn, specifically for guitar and you can find free tabs on the web. But the
downside to tabs and chord notation are that the timing (time signature) is not usually apparent or obvious in the tablature. You have to know the song pretty well, arrangement-wise, to be able to play it.

If someone just hands you a piece of sheet music (taugeh), you can pretty much just sit down and play it. If someone hands you some tab, you can play the right notes, but you'll have no idea of the melody or timing unless you know the song.

Yup, u r absolutely right rclxms.gif  rclxms.gif  I'll try to work on that.

Now I have another thought: Thr r some songs which I listen eventhough is played by guitar but can't find these guitar sheets in web. Although one can listen the songs repeatedly and get the patterns gradually, but trying to get the chords right consumes huge amount of time. So any 1 had any idea how to make such tasks possible n in simpler way?

im not good either but this is wut i normally do..
i find the bass note or root noot first.. such as A, D and F..
then i know its in minor key..so the first chord is Aminor..
then i'll try any variation of the D and F that i know which is very limited that sounds like the chord in the song..
or just lookup in the chord dictionary book..

that works for me..

Hmm, if you play covers, try learn to play by listening..

Overtime, you'll become more flexible, in terms of type of music you are playing.

I do understand taugeh and tabs, but , i cant sight read... tongue.gif

Who cares, i'm a part-timer.
