The car is 4 years old. The air bag deployed because of the 'clock spring' wiring shorted. The clock spring is located behind the steering wheel, behind the steering column. It contains the wiring for the horn, airbag, radio controls, etc. Suspect nothing wrong with airbag but main due to wiring.

Proton gave the standard answer 'Car out of warranty period'. So went to Proton parts center in Shah Alam and bought the horn cover (with horn) and clock spring (no more air bag for me). The air bag module cost Rm998.

The clock spring module is also known as mosquito coil (mun heong) by mechs. Cannot open because it's spring loaded, so I don't know how Proton can check if there is going to be a problem even if it's checked every day.

This can happen to ANYONE with air bag installed in your best car in the world..... sad.gif

Just be careful.

First sign is your radio and electrical system go cuckoo.... within a short period of time, before you figure what happened the air bag will deploy prematurely........... imagine you are driving 110 km/h on highway.... dangerous le.....

do proton airbags need to check annually ?  all of my car(no proton in my garage though) (according user manual) at least need to check once when car reach 10 years, or if there AIRBAG warning indicator light up

Yes, you're right, the service life of an Airbag is usually 10 years, after that, the manufacturer will require the owner to change to a new Airbag unit...

Dun blame everything to Proton, even my Dad's E90 had the passenger side airbag prematured deployed. Luckily it was under warranty and got it replaced. Checked and it was the wirings too.

some fault on your airbag system. it may or not deploy the airbag during collision. or maybe premature deployment.

See I always have this fear that things like that will happen to airbags equipped cars.. hahaha. Not just proton, but any car.

And the thing about Malaysians is.. If any part in Proton goes wrong, confirm proton is in the wrong. But if your merc's airbag malfunction or the door handle come off. its not merc's problem whistling.gif

When an accident involves P1 or P2, ppl will say that the car problem that causing the accident. When the accident involves a Merc or Beemer, ppl will say it is the drivers fault.

This problem happened to me just now. But the airbag didn't deploy. Proton Gen2 2005. I saw the airbag light on and a few minutes later my car wiring system gone haywire. The horn went crazy. Everytime I wanted to turn on the engine, the car kept horning. Of course the car won't start. So now my car is stalled. So advice is to call a wireman is it? Other advice also appreciated. Thanks.

Nope...standard. The alarm has no problem. I can lock and unlock the car using the remote. The horn is the prob but I did install a fuel cutter device. I suspect faulty wiring.

its probably because its CKD...being assemble by malaysian jaguh kampung monkey hand so cannot count...can happen to shitty CKD toyota and honda as well...

on german/japan made merc/bmw...this hardly happens...of cause I'm not saying merc and bmw are reliable shit...they break down a lot too cause too many shitty unreliable electronics...thankfully merc has woken up and finally address many of their shithole electronic malfunction issue...my point is...they workmanship and quality is up to minimum standard...

I dont think so as accidents happens. Just like in production, the production number will never reach perfect due to bound of defects in a few regardless it is in Malaysia or overseas. My friend who drives a 206CC in uk got his airbag prematured deployed too, guess luck was not on his side though. As far as i see, there is no issue on the airbag thingie, if there is i am sure the forums will be flooded with topics where each Proton user posting that their airbag popped out and cursing P1. Moreover the airbags and wiring modules all were not made by Proton but was supplied by Autoliv AB from Sweden if i am not mistaken.
