You don't need to throw the duckweed out weekly? Or monthly? Gets out of control lol.

5 elements is not base fert. That is a certain type of water conditioner and additive IMHO. I doubt it's a base fert.

if its base fert. try Sera, or JBL pro flora . things like that where it is clay based.

@bensow,

doesnt mean when a guppy is healthy, the plant should be. anyways, how long is the light on? this is a floating plant. it's too easy to grow that it is a nuisance.

Oh and what's the tank size and lighting wattage.

On the algae problem : I suggest amanos, ottos and SAEs.

On why the algae is there rampant in the first place : How did you maintain your tank? what filter? weekly WC? how do you fertilize?

Drew

Added on October 12, 2009, 12:59 amas blinded mentioned, lighting periods as well.

also blinded,
I have no experience with africana, but I get a lot of feedbacks saying, though lower ammonia content, plant growth tends to slow down after a while.. no more OOMMPH ( i mean it slows down faster compared to AMz.)

how large is the canister filter? l/h?

I suspect its due to undersized filter... also, why no step 1? lol.

@shortpants,
My set-up is a 3feet tank(90cm x 45x45) powered with 300w. ( 150w MH + 36wPL x 4)

Here's a proof of creeping glossos.

Well, that was at week 3. the tank is over 2 months now, and I trimmed the glosso lawn 3 times already lol.

It's a wonder why with 110w , and all that. Still cant?

haha yujin-san, the "joy" of glossos, gotta keep trimming them. theyre as big of a nuisance as duckweed LOL.

Sometimes I wonder.. why the F did I choose riccia and glosso as my foreground lol.

you ARE on the wrong thread. Here is green.. not blue lol.

Try mysis or brine shrimp mix if it is not accepting manufactured foods...

@shortpants

Bump up your lighting, and lower your temperature.. 28~29C is far from favorable. 27~28 would be better.

you mean you're pumping 2 pumps each weekly? Here's how I fertilize my tanks. It is a risky fertilizing schedule if you don't know what you're doing.

2feet.
72w lighting
25C temperature
1 pump of Brighty K and Step series DAILY and 2 pumps after water change.

3feet

300w lighting
25C temperature

3 pumps daily of Step 1 and K.. 5 pumps after water change.

Well that is my ferting regiment. But I won't do that if I were you considering that your temperature isn't that low and lighting isn't as high. But as I kept saying, risky business- you gotta know what you're doing.

Try dosing 1 pump each every 2 days? or 3 pumps per week after water change?

Bro fongzai, time to have some science classs. biggrin.gif

Fan blows water..

Water evaporates..

Nitrate Nitrite ammonia DOES NOT FOLLOW EVAPORATION. it stays in the tank still.

So, we NEED to remove what's cooking up in your tank. What do we do? We remove them by having water change.

After all that is done, only have you TRULY water changed. If you have been just topping up for quite some time, that would explain the sudden fish loss.

Also, more water changes ( small portions, never more than 50% at a single time) actually helps if your filter is not matured enough or strong enough.

UPGRADING your filtration helps in these fields > more bio media means the nitrite and ammonia can be handled by the filter bacteria.. Whereas NITRATE needs water change to remove.. or plainly a heavily planted tank could handle it. But water change is still a MUST.

Also do note that the smaller the tank, the less stable it is, therefore it is easier to suffer a crash.

========
PART 2. (conclusion )

Algae attack caused by nitrate building up and not removed, also needs constant maintenance.

Topping up is common practice with the use of fans. This doesn't mean you did a water CHANGE. as mentioned, common practice is to change 30% a week, but you can do 2~3 times in a week without problems IMHO. just dont overchange more than 50%

HOPE MY small WRITE UP IS DETAILED ENOUGH AND COULD HELP YOU OUT.
ALL THE BEST. keep it strong in the hobby okay?

DREW
