Guys, I have a problem with my fern. Why are my fern leaves having bleached out patches? It's like the chlorophyll has been pinched out of the leaf tips. Hope can solve this problem. TIA!!

im no expert bro with this kind of thing... it's just my assumption.

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

but as i said, im not an expert in this kind of thing. those are just my assumptions and my input might be wrong from the fact. maybe you want to wait for a more accurate advice from the pros. it'll be better if you can give your tank specs and list of plants in there also so the pro should know better about ur situation and might give you a more accurate symptom and advice to cure it.

heh but for me personally, if ONLY one or two leaves affected and if it;s quite serious, i'll just cut the leaf off and let it grows a new one. if it's just minor, i leave it like it be in hope nature will do its job but if getting worse or no sign of cured, i'll just cut the thing off again tongue.gif as long there's still some leaf for the fern, a new shoots will grows out.

Hi all,

A newbie question which I hope you guys can help. I have a 13L aquarium which i house about 15 guppies with pump. What kind of plants can I put in that can grow without oxygen pump? Have put in some before but looks as though they can survive. Some feedback would be appreciated.
*
erm... from my limited experience and knowledge, without airpump (which providing more o2 (oxygen) when a tank have more fish than it should hold) also almost all plant can live. but co2 (carbon dioxide) is the main thing.

maybe from you meant is co2. without co2, there'll be limited plant choice but still there's plant that can live. The most hardy plant IME is Java Moss. no matter what tank i put them (except a goldfish tank), they'll survive. with co2, no co2, pail... you can give this a try.
2nd one u can try Java Fern too. As long u didnt bury them in the soil and let the root in the water column, with a very low light they can survive.

some other low-light plant are anubias family, certain more type of moss (for me myself, 90% type of moss can..LOL~!), and few more types of fern like bolbitis (i think without co2 also still can live...never tried). just, dun bury their roots in the soil and give them some low lights when u have no co2.
QUOTE("pinchboyz")
if only low maintenance plants ie fern, bolbitis, moss, they will survive nicely...

btw, i got 1 2L/kg (not sure d) spare CO2 tank for sale, if wan, do contact me...
just like what yu jin said.

anyway, you mentioned your tank got pump, what pump? well, as long your water surface is moving, then your tank already cycling and oxygen in the water. i assume u are mentioneng waterpump to pump tank water to overhead filter (or sump tank), then throw the water back into ur tank. the water splash already cycling an oxygen for ur tank FYI.

I think HC prefer temperature from 25C - 27C. but they still can survive at 27-29 (experiencing this atm). The lower temperature the better and "fresh" they'll looks. 22C...erm.. never tried. hahaha XD i never can get that temp.

my HC initially starts on 26C-27C and they're doing quite okay until recently the weather getting warmer and my fans cant get me lower than 27C anymore now even at night. average around 27C-28.5C and still my HC manage to pearls and grows. only thing is, they didnt looks as nice as before... those old leaf looks like getting burnt or something..the color is darker. bleh~! i just wish they survive until our country getting colder a lil bit.

p/s: i dun have aircond nor chiller.

yo bro badrang, just out of curiosity, is there any specific reason u have CAE in your tank?

heh, just want to know only. because last time i've ditched my CAE from my guppy tank (not even planted tank) because they keep harassing my guppies. huhuhu~!! and not to mentioned the adult size of it... bleh, almost about 4 inch and its mouth can eat my fries and cherry with just a gulp. LOL~!!...

QUOTE(fr33dom @ May 12 2009, 12:21 AM)
Hi guys, I'm a newbie and need some help:

1) The cabomba in my tank are turning yellowish. What is the cause of it?
I am using C02 pills and have sufficient lighting. Is it because lack of C02, or I turn on my lights for too long?

2) At night when I turn off the tank lights, some of my guppies will become inactive and lie on the bottom, while some will swim on the surface of the tank.
Next morning, sometimes 1 will die. What is the reason? Lack of oxygen? If so, what is the remedy?

Thanks~
*
hey there bro, i think u better state out ur tank specs like the lights, photo-period, ferts u used, how often u dose the co2 pill and also the basic things, the size of your tank along with the rest i mentioned. Then you can get better help from others and more specifics. Otherwise, it'll be just a random guessing game. Since this time already be a guessing game and I love games, so I joined in tongue.gif

1) - sounds like lack of nutrients to me. imbalance or issuficient lights and co2 (more likely lights). but heh... just a wild guess tongue.gif

2) - fish will be inactive when the lights are off expecially at night. it's their sleeping/rest time. when the lights turned on in a sudden, the fishes will get stunted for a moment. it's normal.

fish gasping on the surface for air showing that they lack of oxygen to breath. either you get a powerhead or airpump, or reduce the amount of fish in your tank (might be overcrowded).

fish dies not only caused by one reason. there's a lot of reasons a fish will die. ammonia spike, overstocked, stress (most of the time), sick (also got alot of varieties in fish desease), and other. cant tell you why your fish die. most of the time, fish wont die in just a snap (except when u put them in a boiled water or something similar). they'll show some sign.... next time, observe any unusual habit of your fish and get your answers.

gd luck bro.

Really?! Which area are you staying? Maybe I can drop by to take it and treat you a dinner. Haha!  icon_rolleyes.gif
We can meet up somewhere near Bangi (weekends or weekdays after 8pm) or at Kelana Jaya (weekdays only). Just let me know whenever you wanna take it. But not this weekend please because I'll be at PD until Monday (duty calls... LOL~!!).

Btw, EA MidValley usually have some moss in their tank... packed and floated in the tank infront of their counter. Mostly are java moss and some spiky moss. You might wanna check it out (because not many people buying their moss for some unknown reason). Pet Family Taman Megah rarely got moss for sale. You're lucky if you can get some there.

There's an old LFS near the old Lim Kok Wing area (somewhere near the 7-Eleven, you'll notice their marine tank outside of the shop as display tank). In their freshwater display tank got few types of moss and a moss wall. They do have some mosses most of the time (but that auntie will give you any moss she can reach in that tank if you're asking for 'moss' because to her, all moss is same AND she wont let you pick the moss type that you want from that tank).

@zangetsu
bro, ur main stone isnt big enuf IMO and it looked blended among the rest of the stone. ur other stone, they looked too "nicely-arranged".avoid even (is it "even" for nombor genap?) numbers for your "visible"/obvious stones in iwagumi layouts. lastly for now, golden section doesnt mean all stones gathered there. it can be and it can be not to suit the balance. maybe you can post your full tank shot and let's see how it looks like.

oh, and another thing, the stones looks so "vertically" straight like stonehenge.

Didn't realize there's so much tank space left, Needs more rocks, and One larger main rock IMO.!!

Drew

+1 icon_idea.gif

i think i already told u bro before rite? if u planning for iwagumi, u should have many rocks to choose from and to use from. You'll stuck in disadvantages and held from being creative when you have limited option for rocks in creating iwagumi. no need to mentioned some of them you should break em into small pieces for certain layout. huhuhu.... more more~!!! if i were you, i get another 2 times the amount from what you have in your tank at least for me to choose from. hahahah~!!!

personally, your 3rd option looks better. you need another group of rocks on the right hand side to balance out since your left hand side rocks isnt big enuf to be outstanding in the tank by its own. it;s just my opinion tho. if you like it that way, then it's up to you anyway.

keep rockin'!! thumbup.gif

LOL, our beloved BBA....~!! w00t~!! rclxms.gif

@rySse
as drew said some way to get rid of them. IME, i had been attacked with BBA at almost everywhere in my tank. even it;s not serious but it's all around. Filter inlet, leaves, rocks and even at my co2 hose. huhuhuhu~!! having fun with em last time biggrin.gif

what I've done are :
    a) Filter Inlet (or hose) : take out the filter inlet pipe. put under running tap water and use aquarium sponge and clean them by rubbing them a lil bit hard. some is firmly rooted..just use ur finger to pick it. it'll be easily plucked off if do correctly. For the inside part that you cant reach by ur finger, u can always use tweezers but might be a lil bit challenging. Other way for these affected area are, bleach them~!!! whistling.gif (but i never try or use it anyway).

    b) Plant Leaves : just cut out any that affected and scoop em out and throw away tongue.gif

    c) Stones (or any place that cant use direct Excel method) : Buy the eyebrow picker at pasar malam for RM2, and pluck them out from the base. some might be a lil bit hard to be plucked. dun worry...just use ur hand if you can reach it.

    d) Mosses (yes, I got BBA on my US fissidens before..bleh~!) : Use Small scissors and trim the BBA nicely and as short as you can without snipping the moss (if snipped lil bit is okay), then leave it to your SAE to clear em up for you. You dont want to use Excel Spot Treatment when they're on mosses..... shakehead.gif
Try to do manual removal as much as you can. Make sure your co2 is consistent and fert accordingly. well, at least after you;ve cleared up as much as u can by manual removal, throw in one (or 2 based on ur tank size) juvenile SAE. They'll take care the newly growth BBA and will keep BBA at bay while at the same time, u try to gain control back over your Co2 and fert. Observe your tank in a week or two after manual removal and after you've put SAE in there. help your SAE as much as you can to remove the BBA. simple math,... you help them, they'll help u later in the long run. This is what i'm practicing tongue.gif

Once you get back your co2 and fert balance, you can move your SAE or leave it there. It;s your call. My way is not the best way I'm sure but at least I prefer to do that way and as another alternate way for you to try out perhaps. It's just I try my best to not using any chemical way to fight algae (only green water i always surrender and use UV filter). You may follow Drew's suggestion too anyway as it's been recommended by all over the pros discussion.

Keep in mind that battling algae is fun sometimes. Feel the feeling when you;ve won the battle rclxm9.gif Just enjoy the battle and have fun. dont stress out and good luck~!

From my limited knowledge and research previously, BBA will pay a visit when there's unstable supply of co2. i dunno it for sure when I have 24/7 co2 supply at the same rate. Some says when there's a dead spot in the tank...also not really true for my case. But there might be a logic when there's unstable balance between your co2 and ferts. For me personally, BBA will just come whenever they feel wanna pay a visit in any of my tank even when everything is consistent. I dunno..it;s like a hotel for them for my tank.. hahaha~!!!

@Pucca
cant really see the fry...but damn, im jealous. how come my otto wont breed. sweat.gif again, congratulations bro~!! maybe you can be one among the hobbyist that breeds otto and sell to us cheaper than LFS tongue.gif as you already know, Otto is among the highest demand in cleaner crew tongue.gif
