QUOTE(holy_devil113 @ Apr 22 2009, 12:04 PM) to compare it to marilyn manson or ozzy osbourne? Near impossible in malaysia. Arthur Kam is good..is very very good in fact that he won this year UNdiscovered Modern drummer under 18 category, which is a worldwide competition in case some dont know. But not much plubicity of him outside of Malayisa, didnt see his name mentioned in other drum forums.....kinda wasted. But i sure hope someone in malaysia can be as good and popular as them. Anyway, I know few drummer buddies earning extra income part time, by teaching and gigging and recording. Its more of a passion for them In fact, there is a hotel here in Pg is offering for a drummer working from Mon - Sat (8pm-12pm) - Gaji : ~RM 2K ... |

the same goes to other instruments as well, guitar, bass, saxophone.
the only source of income for musicians now in malaysia is teaching, gigging or even sessionist. but if u really wanna be a full time drummer, make sure ur parents support u. |

I doubt anyone in this world can earn a decent living just playing drums ALONE. Most successful drummers i've seen are producers/multi instrumentalist/clinic drummers/sessionist etc. Even Derek Roddy doesn't play drums as the main source of income, in fact he breed snakes for sale. I remember a friend from NY telling me John Blackwell of Prince accepted a 90 bucks jazz gig in a NY bar. I guess to survive as a drummer/musician you really need to stand out ahead of the rest and be really really really really....really hardworking.

QUOTE(echobrainproject @ Apr 22 2009, 09:32 PM) haha. have you tried playing full time (as in mon til fri) in a pub or hotel as a cover band? sure, the pay might seem pretty decent but trust me, it aint fun at all after the 2nd or 3rd day. i tried, couldnt take it. Nope, I only play on and off in small gigs/weddings....and ya, I do agree playing every single night would definitely have taken a toll on me No easy way to earn the dough....Its money for your time, energy and social life |
