I doubt anyone in this world can earn a decent living just playing drums ALONE. Most successful drummers i've seen are producers/multi instrumentalist/clinic drummers/sessionist etc. Even Derek Roddy doesn't play drums as the main source of income, in fact he breed snakes for sale. I remember a friend from NY telling me John Blackwell of Prince accepted a 90 bucks jazz gig in a NY bar. I guess to survive as a drummer/musician you really need to stand out ahead of the rest and be really really really really....really hardworking.
