QUOTE(Eithanius @ Aug 5 2010, 08:12 PM) Nehalem is the micro-architecture for Gainestown (set of Xeon processors used in MP 2009), which no longer use FB-DIMM RAM modules on upper and lower riser cards anymore... It comes in a single tray for processors and ram slots... And it has nothing to do with the previous MP setups... In case you are confused about code names and architectures: Thanks for the info..so now new mac pro can use about the same RAM available for desktop.. like it Woodcrest - Core - MP 2006 Clovertown - Core - MP 2007 8-core only Harpertown - Penryn - MP 2008 Bloomfield - Nehalem - MP 2009 4-core only Gainestown - Nehalem - MP 2009 8-core only, MP 2010 4-core only Gulftown - Westmere - MP 2010 8- and 12-core only Info courtesy of Wiki... |

QUOTE(Eithanius @ Aug 10 2010, 01:21 PM) Read ECC... Haha.. There are reports that using non-ECC memory modules work fine, but then again it is always recommended to use ECC RAM as Mac Pros are designed to just in case to avoid certain risks of the machine hanging due to data corruption on the modules... New Intel Mac Pro makes me sometimes miss Power Macs, which works fine with normal DDR RAM.. This post has been edited by b48753: Aug 12 2010, 09:06 AM |

Masculine, I don't believe you need such much of RAM just to import movies from 8mm video. Is your 8mm analog or using iLink (firewire) transfer?

QUOTE(Masculine @ Sep 17 2011, 06:47 AM) My old cam is 11 year old TRV-320E using firewire to transfer. Problem is, I have lotsa tapes of my kids (since they're babies - now they're teenagers).. I delayed transferring them until vista comes along and decided not to recognize the old cam.. For your info I still using one of my old-school PowerMac which have only 1.5GB RAM and still can capture all the video via Firewire (even HDV format). The best you can do is at FCP under System Setting, try to limit capture now to 4 minutes. As my case I'm capturing all video under iMovie, then edit it at Final Cut Express..I have no problem with photo, and new AVCHD video. Only that whenever I'm transferring with my old cam, it will transferring for only 5 minutes and after that FCP crash. Any suggestion? Anyway, the RAM is so dirt cheap... and now I understand why people love apple products even though I'm still learning the interface... For the RAM I advise to get certified KTA RAM as it does affect on warranty, and also when comes to the performance. Try to search in the LYN, I do sure some of the forumner do sell KTA RMA cheaper than u can get at Apple center.. |

QUOTE(Masculine @ Sep 17 2011, 12:36 PM) I'm still very new to apple. My iMac running with lion OS. Somehow, i cannot capture my video using imovie (the old firewire cam). So far only fcp x recognize my old camera. Quite strange..most of the time iMovie can recognize native firewire device..not sure about current iMovie..Actually I'm still using iMovie HD 2006...cause I like the interface much more than current iMovie. |

QUOTE(Masculine @ Sep 17 2011, 09:20 PM) I have this 1TB maxtor external HDD I bought some 3 years ago.. use it for my window files... "strangely" enough my mac can read it and I can transfer my old files in the HDD to my imac... I always thought this can't be done because of the different formatting.. and of the things that keep me delaying for getting into macs... As long your HDD in FAT32 you can still read and write in native MacOS..if your external formatted as NTFS there's 3rd party NTFS-3G or Paragon NTFS for u to use..That's normal for seller at Lowyat to have different price on each items they sell, even tough the brand and model is exactly same..just the matter if you are good enough to do bargaining with them.. Wish if the Mac Pro is same as well as previous Power Mac, which can use normal RAM sold at Lowyat |

Anyone over here ever did RAID on your Mac? and which RAID setting is good for performance, as I'm so much in video editing and 3D rendering.

QUOTE(wei @ Apr 17 2012, 05:11 PM) Software RAID is nothing near a proper hardware controlled, monitored and cached RAID. But have to fork out more, much more. For stability, we recommend SAS drives. For performance we recommend SSDs. Or you can mix both up for balance. When u said combination of SAS and SSD, which RAID you mean?0,1 or 5? |

I'm in dilemma whether to spend on extra RAM or go for SATA-3 SSD.
Anyone here ever test their mac to max on this? |
