Guys, when Lion comes out, I'm thinking of splashing the cash and buy a SSD for my MBP. But I currently know little about SSDs apart from how the perform much faster than HDDs. Any recommendation on what SSD I should buy for a budget between RM 600-700? And does installing them is as easy as installing a normal HDD? does they require additional softwares?
*
u shud be able to get a 90gb corsair SSD for ~rm650

installlation is exactly the same as HDD, no softwares required

speaking about this, is Lion's TRIM support only for apple-installed SSD or any SSD?

guys, my mbp is 2.53GHz Intel core 2 Duo with 4GB 1067MHz DDR3.

previously i ask about HDD replacement, but few shops are not sure if it will fit my mbp, so ended up i put on hold. Coz as per this forum, i noted that the thickness cannot be more than 9.5mm rite? and seems like there isn't any 1TB yet hor.

another question is regarding the RAM. how much would it turn out faster if i were to upgrade to 8GB? is there any noticeable difference? thanks. and what do i have to look out for when purchasing RAM?
*
unibody MBP can fit 12.5mm hdd. so no problem there smile.gif go install ur 1TB hehe

about the RAM, well if u dont use more than 4gb, then upgrading to 8gb wont bring much difference, if at all. open Activity Monitor, go to the System Memory tab and look at Page Outs. do whatever heavy task u normally do, then look at page outs again. if it's still 0 or juz a few kilobytes, upgrading to 8gb wont help

u simply need DDR3 1066Mhz SODIMM. if cannot find 1066mhz, 1333Mhz or higher will work too cuz it would be underclocked to 1066mhz anyway.

ehhh. can i upgrade ram for MBA by myself?
which model u recommended?
*
the RAM is soldered to the motherboard, so no. if u want 4gb u have to opt for it when purchasing online. if u already bought it, then the only way is to sell ur MBA n buy a new one with 4gb

I believe it's because the dispute between intel and nvidia last time.
Correct me if I'm wrong
*
i think the dispute was about nvidia chipsets, not GPUs. i think laaa ;P

btw the 1st gen MBP used ati radeon x1600. only the 2nd gen started to use nvidia 7600gt. now back to ati once again

guys, i search everywhere but none of the computer shops got 1TB internal hdd for my mbp. one of the staffs told me that its possible to use external usb hdd instead. i have got a 1TB WD My Passport juz recently bought, any idea if its suitable to remove its casing and install into my mbp. dun wanna waste time to remove and end up not suitable. thanks in advance.
*
i suppose it could work. but i dont think there's an easy way to take the drive out from that casing. probably have to break it open. cannot find the 1tb hdd online?

but if you only get much space without the increase of speed. it would be quite lagging. no point to get 1 tb of space if its take a couple of minutes accessing it. lol
*
actually the more free space (by percentage of the hdd total space), the faster ur computer will run. but not that noticeable la

QUOTE(fangheart @ Jul 25 2011, 01:07 AM)
Hi,

Wondering if anyone would advise me on choosing a high performance memory for my Macbook Pro 15"? I've just bought it less than 2 weeks ago but noticed that whenever I use Parallel Desktop, it sucked up the resources and made the notebook go slow. Yes, I'll be using VM a lot.

Any recommendation?

Cheers,
Jeremy
*
i think high performance ram is only for overclocking purposes. if u dont overclock, they will perform just like standard ram. the ram speed is tied to ur cpu's FSB. correct me if im wrong.

try adjust the ram made available for ur virtual machine. maybe half of ur total ram? 2gb is fine for me... for fusion3 + win7 32-bit la. upgrade to 8gb if u dont think u have enough.

guys, i have been hunting for 1TB internal HDD for my mbp for weeks. no news, end up i get one the shops in JB to indent order for me. but according to the shop they said that forum has mentioned that mbp will slow down if i install this WD 1TB HDD. just wanna check if its really true? anyway i have place my bet, waiting for item to arrive.
*
WD's 1tb 2.5" hdd is the scorpio blue, which runs at 5400 rpm. their 7200rpm scorpio black line doesnt have 1tb sizes

if ur current drive is 5400rpm then u shouldn't experience any decrease in speed. if u're currently using 7200rpm butdowngrading to 5400rpm, the speed decrease is actually very2 small

my WD blue scorpio just arrived and now m installing mac os x leopard. so far so good. now installing apps. i gone to a site yesterday but can't remember which site, is there an app that lets u test ur hdd speed? coz someone on forum said that its speed decreased after install this hdd, but maybe he got a defective unit. so just wanna confirm. oh yah, this 12.5mm hdd fits perfectly into my mbp (mid 2009).

can i just check if its required to update my os x leopard before installing lion? or i can install lion straight after i use the leopard cd that comes with my mbp. thanks
*
u need at least snow leopard 10.6.6 for lion cuz that's the only way to get the mac app store

if u already have the lion dmg, i guess no problem

is it true that the 2011 Mac mini uses a PC3-10600 ram? is there a specific ram that i need to use with it? or i can just buy any other brands as long its the right model. because i can get a 4gb ram for less than rm150.... Thanks
*
the mac mini uses DDR3 1333 Mhz RAM. http://www.apple.com/macmini/specs.html

nothing specific. though it's preferable if u bring ur mac mini to the shop and ask them to install & test for you on the spot. just in case. 2x4gb RAM should be not more than rm250

QUOTE(uniquexme @ Aug 4 2011, 07:34 PM)
guys, stay away from WD Blue Scorpio 1TB 5400rpm internal HDD for your mbp. it really is what forum said, runs slower than my 250GB original HDD.

how come?

Sifus, can I just ask coz I can't seem to find this anywhere. If I were to install a new HDD for my MBP, will I be prompted to format the disk when I am installing OS X?

And after that, I assumed that I can use back my Time Machine backup to restore to my last restored state.
*
im not exactly sure if the OSX installer will auto-format when installing. if it doesn't, when u boot from the OSX dvd go to Utilities > Disk Utility (at the top) to format the drive. if it's Lion, you'll see this option in the middle of the screen

you dont have to reinstall OSX to restore from ur time machine back up. boot from the DVD, go to utilities and Restore from Time Machine (not sure what's the exact name lah). make sure u have connected ur TM drive of course. it'll ask u which backup to restore to (pick the latest one) then choose to restore to ur internal drive.
