I heard that average broadband speed in Japan is 50Mbps or higher because they all use ethernet and fiber to the house.
for the same price we're paying slow.. streamyx which we're getting 1.5Mbps only.   Is that correct?
*
For most of the part yes. We do get FTTH (fiber-to-the-home) but usually this is only up to the building itself. After that it's distributed via VDSL which is still using normal telephone line. (Contrary to the normal perception that we get an Ethernet cable or Fiber optics cable directly into the comp). That's the physical connection part.
As for speed, it'll depends on the plan and varies between 12Mbps (lowest ADSL plan) right up to 1Gbps (Hikari ONE by KDDI).

Currently, I'm on a 100Mbps FTTH and I pay a monthly fee of 4200 JPY. Gotta love Japan for its Internet speed and no hanky panky stuffs like throttling. smile.gif

I thought about leaching the neighbors' wifi (a lot use WEP which is quite easily hackable) but I don't like stealing smile.gif

Thanks for the UQ link. Looks like this indeed may be a viable option.
I would buy the USB dongle for about 12800円, costs about 4400円 a month and I will cancel after a month. Each re-registration would cost 2835円.

Does anybody know if tethering to a phone is an option as well? I will have access to a borrowed DoCoMo keitai (not sure what plan) while in Japan.

Finally, does anybody know what the absolute cheapest postpaid broadband contract would cost? I may do this instead. Minimum speeds (in Japan, min speed > average speeds elsewhere!) are fine.
*
Yup... the UQ service doesn't seem to have a contract period aside from the minimum of 30 days.

As for tethering, by rule - I think all providers specifically specify that tethering with a PC will count as separate charge even if you have an unlimited packet usage plan. So, it's a bit risky if you ask me because if they start monitoring your PC tether usage; then you're in for a huge bill. sweat.gif

I think the broadband contracts with most ISPs is not expensive at all. You're just looking at around 700-800 yen a month. The killer is the NTT/(KDDI in certain areas) line charge (usually around 3000 JPY). I'm not sure if it's possible to like suspend a line and the reactivate it when you need it so this might be something you can try to find out.

Btw, from TGS website. Is there no way to purchase the ticket earlier, online or at local konbini? Does the tickets never sold up, if we can only purchase it on the day itself?
*
I remembered that last year I did get tickets in advance (my colleagues got them from the kombini) so it should be possible. Perhaps they just haven't start selling them yet. As for the tickets booth, I don't think they'll run out of tickets ... only thing is that if you want to go early; you might be greeted by a long queue of ppl trying to buy the tickets on the day itself.

Hi guys. I need some suggestions about shopping place in Tokyo. My fren will go to Japan this October n right now he really need to buy a new camera, DSLR to be specific. I suggest him to just buy it in Japan once he got there but he argue with me that the price is not that different. Is it true? He aims for a below rm1.6k DSLR. Really need ur help here...
*
It's a hit and miss situation... I think if without any sales; the price is comparatively the same... but if there's a sale or they're running a campaign promotion or sometimes buying online then it can get pretty cheap (when I bought my DSLR about 4 months back, it was overall RM600 cheaper compared to retail back home).

Conclusion to this chapter: got in touch with KDDI (I already have a landline in the house; just basic dial-tone with every call call rated; cheap @ 1,500 JPY/month).
KDDI says the cheapest ADSL package (10Mbps) they've got is 3,200 JPY/month (800 JPY/month modem rental included) on top of my existing telephone service.
Total 4,700 JPY/month. Too expensive.

Thanks for all your help. I will go with WiMax.
*
Cool~ You're most welcome.

Hey guys, I need some help.. I'm going to go to Japan on August 8th. I wanna bring my phone there but not sure if I can actually use it there. Can I use 3g phone there if I activate roaming for my phone?
*
Short answer - Yes. As long as you have a 3G phone and have activated your International roaming with your mobile provider, it'll work.

Is there a Jusco in Melaka? I think you'll have more luck if you search in Jusco (since they're a Japanese company).

I have one question...

How is it possible to bring needed medicine, if i travel to Japan?
*
You should be able to bring in meds as long as it's for your personal consumption.
Like you said, it's just an asthma inhaler and it's not like you're going to bring in a box right?

If you don't want the cost of going to Hakone, there are onsens in Tokyo itself. Odaiba has a very popular one. It is a true onsen i.e. using mineral water albeit heated.
Cost is around 3000/yen per day I think.

If you don't want to go to an onsen, but instead you just want the "japanese bathing experience", you can go to a public sento. These used to be very common but are dwindling in numbers now.
But they are definitely still around.
A sento is basically a public bath. Using "normal" piped water. But you still get the experience of participating in the ritual of japanese bathing. Costs are probably in the 800/yen range per entry.

The one in Odaiba - http://www.ooedoonsen.jp/higaeri/english/
Great place to go just for the experience if you don't want to travel out of Tokyo.

Perhaps MaC was mistaken on the rules to get/change driving licenses and was just posting from what he heard last time.
Since this issue was cleared by you and tatsuyachiba; I think there's really nothing left to discuss.
