Hey Guys,

Just wondering if you guys clean your macbook aluminium frequently? It seems that there are small black spots appearing on my armrest, I tried rubbing it off with a cloth and it didnt seems to fade away. Anyone have such problems too?

I use the bundled cleaning cloth to clean the screen. As for the keyboard and aluminum part, I just use little bit damp tissue paper to clean the dirts.

these spots r likely to be tarnishing caused by acid from the sweat from our hands. best way to prevent this is to wipe clean the surface at least once a day.

true, its because of sweat. i got it on my previous mbp. now searching for a nice wristpad shield tongue.gif

for the unibody macbooks, any glass cleaning fluid will do. its just glass anyway. for matte screens juz use plain water...dun use any alcohol cuz it will damage the screen

Haha, no FOC alcohol swab for you then tongue.gif Kidding. Well, if the alcohol swab that they mention is the same as the one that's used in disinfection, then you can get it from any pharmacy shop nearby, they r selling it.

I would suggest try mild soap water before using alcohol. Not recommend to use alcohol for cleaning on electronic products. Reduce the risk. Who knows if alcohol accidentally diffuse into the internal circuit board... LOL

Haha, It's very very very unlikely to happen xD As we know alcohol evaporates in few secs. It's ady gone before it reaches the circuit board, Furthermore, the heat inside the lappy will accelerate the evaporation process so it's kinda safe I think. Some more you can kill bacteria on it tongue.gif

Found this on the MB Owner's manual:

Cleaning your MacBook When cleaning the outside of your MacBook and its components, first shut down your MacBook, unplug the power adapter, and remove the battery. Then use a damp, soft, lint-free cloth to clean the computer’s exterior.
Avoid getting moisture in any openings. Do not spray liquid directly on the computer.
Do not use aerosol sprays, solvents, or abrasives that might damage the finish.

Cleaning the MacBook screen To clean the MacBook screen, first shut down your MacBook, unplug the power adapter, and remove the battery. Then use the included cleaning cloth to wipe the screen. Dampen the cloth with water if necessary. Do not spray liquid directly on the screen.

---

Ok, if it is really necessary to use alcohol, be sure it is highly diluted.

the manual says that because if someone somewhere use a bad type of cleaning agent n spoilt their macbook, they can sue apple. so i guess apple is just being safe saying juz use damp cloth.

of course, we all know sometimes a damp cloth wont do anything.

in other words, do at ur own risk ;P

I don't really remember that our sweat is acidic or contains acidic substance. Most likely it is dirt from our skin mixed with sweat and cause sediments to accumulate on the aluminum surface. The surface is matte and it has good chances for holding dirt over long period of usages.

The usual recommendation, a damp lint cloth and soapy water to clean it. It dirt has been there for months, then its time to use a stronger agent like 50% alcohol swaps or something of similar nature.

No need to pay premium price from those Apple retail shops too tongue.gif

Nay, I think buying SP for MacBook is kinda a waste of money shakehead.gif After all, the screen is not exposed when you keep it in ur bag unlike ipod or other gadgets. So, better save the money for other accessories biggrin.gif

Its glass for the Alu Macs. You need something higher density than glass to scratch it by accident. Example: Diamonds or Ruby.

Heard from someone tat u only put the keyboard protector while ur screen is open
But
REmoved the protector when ur screen is closed
to prevent markings on the shiny screen

or

according to some forumer
dun removed the keyboard protector
but put the piece of cloth like material over it when u wan to close the screen
tis will prevent markings

I used to use Magic sponge as well, until I released that it made the surface of my MacBook white coarse and it somehow scratches the reflecting surface of my MacBook so I stopped using it ady xD Now I'm using the products from my dad's shop.

i think the RM88 iklear kit is a good deal eh at machines. u can use it many times.. 1 bottle 60ml maybe can finish up to 4 months.. and then in the kit there's 6 more travel type one... which means use 6 times. lastly 3 cloths reusable...

that's mean, after all iklear finish, just purchase the bottle spray type, since u already have the 3 cloths.

i usually just wet half of the cleaning cloth given by apple and wipe my entire macbook aluminum including the screen.. the wet part first, followed by the dry part..

i thought of purchasing the iKlear, but its kinda pricey..

Yea I bought from Machines @ RM149 last year. Just 2 weeks ago, I went ALL IT @ LowYat and it is just RM79. I was like rclxub.gif . Almost half the price?? Same packaging and same 8oz set and yet half the price. I have no idea where is there any imitation of this product here. Anyone can give their opinion?

Regards.

i think it might be the same thing lah...that's normal for an apple retailer store like machine and others..their selling price of the computers are controlled by apple,so their margin quite small lah.. afaik, usually those shops will increase the price on the apple accessories to cover back lah...
the moral is,if u wanna buy apple computers it's ok to buy anywhere. But if u're looking for the accessories better research and survey first.. wink.gif

i dont think by just wiping using microfiber only, the oil will go away.. that's why i bought iklear (machines is selling at rm88)

usually i use microfiber to wipe out dust/dirt from screen and keyboard.. if there is finger print on the screen, i will use iklear.

Err, I don't think alcohol based cleaners are advised.

Here's a cheap alternative: get some alcohol free toner (can buy from Guardian/Watson's- Simple brand, big bottle abt RM20 I think), and clean with cotton swabs.

I'm telling u guys, it works like a charm!

Have used it to clean my old white iBook and also use it to clean the screen of my mobile phone.

ya,i think u can get better result by cleaning with iklear solution and wipe it with the given chamois..tried it,not 100% cleaned lah,but it's better than before, maybe after 2-3 times later on, the oil stain will go off.

in reference to my earlier post. so i purchased iklear and tried wiping my keyboard with it together with a microfiber clothe of cos, but the oily stains are still there. well its not as bad as before, but from a certain angle, it still seems visible.

im also worried that when i close my screen, the oil will transfer to my screen. after trying to clean away the oil stains on my keyboard, i used the iklear to clean the screen (with another clothe of cos). but after wiping, it seems like there is a layer of oil on my screen.

hmm any solution? blush.gif

i only clean with iklear when there is smudges, fingerprint or oil, if not i would just wipe it with microfiber to get rid of the dust (without iklear).

maybe it's your screen protector.. i dont have anything on the screen.

spray a few on the cloth and wipe it vertically/horizontally.
after finish cleaning, change to the dry side of the cloth and wipe it until u satisfied.

Well, you might want to have 2 cloth when cleaning. 1 cloth wet to clean the screen, another 1 dry to wipe off. Wiping off prevents the water stains/streaking.

As for the dust issues, wiping tends to cause static and that causes dust to "stick" on the screen. You could use cleaning solutions such as iKlear or one of Radtech's solutions to prevent static but do keep in mind that you'll still need to clean from time to time. I personally wouldn't bother with the solutions, water seems to work fine, just that you might need to clean often.

i guess the screen protector surface doesnt work well with iklear.. i cant figure out any other reason why it doesnt work for you.

I have a Macbook Pro 13 and its screen is very hard to 'clean'. I have all those solutions that works great but there's always some small traces of streaks.

So what I do is to use solutions for the first wipe, then another wipe to dry it off and then a nice microfibre for the finishing. With these kind of wiping action, static dust problems will come. So I have a nice soft brush to remove them.

By the way, does anyone know where to get a screen protector that covers the entire glass surface of the MBP?

Recently the MacBook Pro screen is getting into my head rclxub.gif Headaches after prolonged viewing. Its not the regular reflections of a glossy screen but the glass is too reflecting a lot of stray lights into my eyes. Can't really explain it.

By the way, any risks using it without a screen protector? I reckon a glass surface is quite resistant to scratches. Using a microfiber and a brush to clean out dusts.

Hi everyone

Was wondering what products you use to clean your mac and how do you clean it.

I know its been covered previously on other posts but there's one item i dont see being discussed.

Just to compare, the Iklear is RM 88, the quality i believe is vouched by many,

and there is now there is this product called Topper LCD Cleaning Screen Kit, RM 35

Anyone has used it ? care to share their thoughts on the Topper product ?

If you guys planning to clean your screen without splurging out.

Get a high quality Lens Cloth. Make sure that it is 100% microfiber. My mom bought a new glasses and not using her new Lens cloth. So I use it to clean my screen. It work perfectly.

Only you need to clean it like everyday.

i heard alcohol is really bad for matte screen (since it removes the matte coating off) but doesnt really matter for a glossy screen. ammonia (in cleaning substances such as Windex) however, is bad cause it will turn the screen yellow and make it brittle. ive had some weak alcohol based cleaners to clean my glossy screen and it works better in getting rid of fingerprints on it than to just use water.

what u said abt matte screen is true. best to just use damp cloth for matte screen. about the ammonia, u're referring to matte screens, i presume?

i know this may sound dumb, but it actually worked for me for a long time. on my old macbook white, the palm rests and area surrounding keyboard gets black with sweat marks.. i use an eraser to rub it and wipe away the rubbings with a dry cloth. then repeat as many times you need and wipe away with a damp cloth in the end.

Compressed air. They usually come with the narrow tips to direct into the area under the keys.

Or you could pop up the individual keys and get a vacuum over it. Just be careful you don't lose keys and bend the pins.

yeah..dun use cyber clean to clean the keyboard.. for dust on the keypads would be fine..

It only works pretty good on my normal desktop keyboard.

I use normal water to clean only when i felt its dirt.. Not really care bout the dirt thing....Most of the time the laptop stay indoor.

Btw, why antz so like the unibody?!...

oh sorry2 my bad...i wrongly remembered which one the clear guard is hehehe

yes u're supposed to wash the clearguard with a little amount of soap. to clean ur screen, juz use a damp lint-free cloth. dont mix with anything because some chemicals can damage the matte coating.
