Wth... MAS is damm cunning when it comes to their Enrich redemption.
I was trying to redeem my miles for 2 return tickets to singapore. As i couldn't use the enrich online site (cos they still haven't send me a new password after i requested to change the email address for like a week) i decided to call their call center and spoke directly with their enrich redemption booking staff.
I asked the staff how much points is needed for a return flight to singapore. She says 20k per person. As i only have 39,019 points in my account, i said is there a way to top up or can i transfer from another account. She says can, charges are RM0.10 + RM 40 for direct purchase and RM 0.035 + RM 40 for transfer. As my gf also have an enrich account with about 3k points, i said i'll opt for the points transfer to make it a total of 40k. I asked is there any other fees i need to pay and she said no.
So i did the booking through the phone and after that i called my gf to transfer 1k points to my account. We paid RM 75 in total for the transfer. I wanted to go to MAS office tomorrow to get the tickets processed.
Then at night i received a mail about my new password for Enrich Online. So i just thought, why not give the online redemption a try and see how it is. keyed in all the info and go through the booking process, then i realized at the side there which states my total fees : 40,000 Miles Points + RM 308 tax. I'm like wtf? still need to pay tax? When i asked them, the reservation staff didn't say anything about booking.
If i knew i have to add summore money to pay the tax, i woudn't have even bothered to change my miles for a flight. This was my first time changing miles as i've accumulated them from travelling on company's business. The reason why i chose to redeem the miles is because they are going to expire and i was trying to find a cheaper way to singapore. that blardy Rm 300 tax is already 2 return tickets to singapore on Air Asia.
So dammed pissed now... I called their center again and they say cannot do anything now cos system down... have to call again tmr.
Stupid piece of crap... already wasted so much money calling them to change my email and send the password.. Call for 5 days, today only send the password after i threatened lodge a report against them. Now this piece of crap happen.

If that's so I think it's the "normal" way of doing things.
Like how AA sometimes advertise "Free tickets" but still need to pay a bit for these taxes, I guess MAS do same for their miles redemption.
Ticket is free through miles but still need to pay the taxes
Sucks though, I did not know exactly how it worked and seems you found out the bad way
