Okeh a few questions ;

1) Silkscreen frame , Fabric Paint and Photo Emulsion , do you know how much do they cost ?

2) If I use your alternative for a lightbox , do I terbalikan the image because the light is coming from above instead of below ?

3) Once the image is burned to the silkscreen , is it permanent or can you wash it off to put on a new image ?

4)What type of paper and oil do you use?
Tankeeuuh
*
silkscreen frame ,
rm4.50 for a3
for the silk , rm5.90 from kamdar

fabric paint rm2 also can get tongue.gif
photo emulsion vision art rm25 plus sensitizer rm6.50

nope , no need. if theres any error , the screen still can be used smile.gif

you use normal paper and cooking oil ! tongue.gif

yeah you can make diy lightbox , i use two thick silkscreen frame to make mine.
dont bother asking other lowyat forumers for help with the lightbox ,
i did once and they started bragging about them making lightbox and
obviously not helping me with my lightbox. i got very irritated.

Anyway lol out of topic , in the end i made my own lightbox with only rm30
i think. or you can get the vision art lightbox for rm95

user posted image

i use my own used silkscreen frame to combine and made a frame out from it
and i use a flat piece of wood so i can put my ringlight to it, the glass costed
me around rm12 , the ringlight around rm10 ( rm8 for the ring light ) and most
of the stuff i found around the house hahahaha basically i just korek and use whatever i have.

quite mafan tho , but it's fun makng your own lightbox smile.gif
good luck !

For photo emulsion, i recommend socomask , ( its the black container , the emulsion is purple )
I bought the emulsion from somewhere in kl i cant remember ._. and the green bottle ,
the emulsion is in red. the red version is good , but make sure your silk have smaller holes.
lol must use expensive silk.I'll upload the other picture later.

Hi,

just to share  smile.gif

Khai lien have many type of emulsion, there are for t-shirt(garment), pvc, metal etc.
the best for you is to drop by their shop and ask them.

i'v used khai lien emulsion, they have the purple (come with sanitizer), pink(premix with sanitizer), and green(come with sanitizer)

the best is the purple, it can give you very sharp image.

But compare than khai lien, hai kuang gives you a cheaper price for the purple emulsion.
i still using the hai kuang(socomask)

one bottle can make more than 30 screens definitely. my class use one bottle tongue.gif but it depends on how many times you redo. for a3 size.
preferably dont use coloured lightbulb , white tungsten light would do because you're burning the images onto the screen with white light its cleaner better faster.

i use 7 minutes to burn and remember , use a hairdryer to dry the screen faster and when you do the photo emulsion coating , make sure its really really thin. if its too thick , it will spoil the image burning and it wont be clean.

I'm taking multimedia design. they will have this for foundation but only for a project.
I continued making screens cause self interest , flash also.. ( maybe i should put up a tutorial ? tongue.gif )
tongue.gif im in sem 3 year 1 havent touch flash yet ( which they will soon in year 2 )
If you really love doing art manually and digitally , you will be able to pick up fast , as there is internet you can find many many tutorials out there. Maybe in our country , sometimes we dont have things we need here to do our stuff then have to order and yadayadayada.

You should take the course if youre interested because we're totally different from graphic design course tongue.gif something different tongue.gif I freelance too , just in case if you wonder multimedians only do websites and flash and computers , we do ads , motion graphic , prints and yeah multi-media stuff.

no youre not , I dont get it at first too. =)
I dont mind explaining ,

The most important item in silkscreening is = photo emulsion
photo emulsion is like film. ( they use this photo emulsion for polaroid tongue.gif if still dont understand can ask me again but the emulsion for polaroid is super sensitive )

This photo emulsion is not that sensitive. in fact you can actually just do it in open air , without a darkroom. All you need is just a room with dim lights.

and of course we need to print the image ( that we want to burn onto the screen ) and it has to be black ! because when the lights go through your paper , it will burn the image onto the screen when you expose it. and when the image is burned onto the screen, the black parts will fall off when you wash the screen.

the screen : the frame is to hold the silk ketat ketat and so we can put emulsion and burn the image onto it. its like a platform tongue.gif

Understand anot ? tongue.gif icon_rolleyes.gif

rubbermilk... i see u always use oil to make the paper transparent.....
Is the result same as I use photostat machine to print on transparent paper?
But i think if use oil, the paper still not 100% transparent....
If the result about same.... then can save money for using cooking oil only... haha... As the transparent paper not cheap...

Use paper better , most of the silkscreening factories they use paper and oil. yeah and i heard if you use oil and paper , the image will be nicer. =) I never use transparency. ok la only once ( which was the first time and i failed lol )

well you can say that we can cheat the light by using oil to make your paper transparent lol

no youre not , I dont get it at first too.

I failed my 1st try la... The photo emulsion wont drop while i clean it after burn la...
I think The photo emulsion that i apply on oredy hard before i burn la...
Because i left it for overnite... is that will make the problem?
I wait for too long time?
After i apply photo emulsion on silk screen, how long do i need to wait actually? Must burn straight after the photo emulsion is dry?
Please Guide me...

dont wait , dont let it dry on itself o_o i didnt even mention that in my tutorial o_o to let you dry your screen.. overnight ?
Use hairdryer , if you dont do this step by step.. sure it'll turn out wrong.

it supposed to be hard and dry before you brn the image , maybe during the overnight process , its already exposed.

My advice to you is watch the video again.

First find a better silk...=)
You've to be patient dont rush in doing this..
you'll get spoil if you're to rush..
UV light bulb you can find at HARDWARE SHOP or AQUARIUM SHOP...
or if you cant get UV light build..
Try to find the highest WATT of light bulb..

put 3-5 light bulb into your exposure box with high volt i'm sure it will take less time...

Planning to get 2 more 100watt bulb... currently have 2 bulb oredy...
Because i need to burn A3 size design...
It is hard to find suitable silk in sibu sarawak market...
And i used to burn not using exposure box ....( bulb in upside position ) I think if use exposure box will be better...
So... i need to get a piece of glass also... no choice... I fail few of my test... haha...
But now... i get the tips oredy... jus need to find the right things and use the right skill...
Everything will going smoothly i think...

Ya... after i fail many time... I think about it whole night....
Use exposure box is the best way... it will press the screen to the glass...
So it will produce sharp sharp design... I think I better use transparent paper to print the design...
Because I use oil... i think the light will be weaker bacuase the paper not 100% transparent...
Whats ur idea? Use oil is fine?

LOL u use paper?
Hmmm
aiyo pening²...

use transparent plastic paper la..
print on it...

it will be much easier to burn it and it will be more sharp..

Yea if u put more weight on it
it will take less time to burn...

But before u put weight on it...

put sponge inside ur BLOCK
then plainwood
then u put heavy² item..=)

trust me , use paper and oil is memang tak masuk akal but it works for me and everyone else in my college.
once i failed with transparent paper because of my emulsion is too thick.

..maybe your emulsion is too thick. i dont mind showing you the silkscreen process if you want to =)

it susuhgetah idea to use oil on paper... ya... it will make the paper transparent... but not 100%...just 50% i think...
I wanna ask... why need put sponge? so it will softly press the silk screen to touch the glass surface? Sponge that use to cuci pingan can use?

great idea dude.... i believe any medium is acceptable and can be used. check your emulsion if it can take oil based medium. and make sure u have cleaners for that if not have to sacrifice the screen. if you do, show us the result.

laulyg:
maybe some thoughts to give you more ideas.

paper n oil. minyak masak is ok but i use sewing machine oil - its transparent. use the thinnest paper u can find 70gsm from tesco that feels thin like crap is my choice.

susugetah - trasparency or film burns so much better especially if you do fine lines or dots. they burn faster too. because the print is SO opaque.

silk - have to use one that is specifically for silkscreen. others can use but results vary and too frustrating to deal with. if using rubber or normal dye, my screen size preference is 1200 but 1000 and 900 is ok for normal printing and big art. plastisol will need a more tighter screen (smaller holes). khai lien carries SEFAR screens.

if dont have glue, just use stapler, hopefully stapler gun. your 1st screen is usually where you learn from mistakes. i like my screen tight. better send for stretching if you can afford. my pref pressure for stretching is minimum 25 Newton.

add more if i have time. cheers.

haiyo.. anyway , have you heard about urbanscapes ? http://urbanscapes.com.my
I'm calling everyone here ( designers especially like duh LOL ) not calling , asking if anyone wants to collabro with me ? Or you can join urbanscapes solo ! tongue.gif

I emailed all of my classmates ( NOTE : I'm from The One Academy and sadly NONE OF THEM REPLIED MY EMAIL sleep.gif )

http://susugetah.blogspot.com/2009/05/call...y-from-toa.html I even posted it up in my blog.

If you're wondering what we'll be making and selling during the event , my idea is to sell handprinted canvas bags , and tees of course. You can design as many as you want ( in Ai format kids ! ) and preferably ONE LAYER ONLY. and well , just let me and the associates go through it , once we approve the design the bags or the tees will be printed. Pirahhhhh. So lanci. Hahahaha takde lah , nanti the sale merosot pasal design macam tahik.. macam mana ?

One problem. I don't have the kachings. Hahaha.. so kena bahagikan antara antara collabrothers and sisters. We'll see the quantity and total and all the business thingies.

If none of them wants to join me , theeeeeen how about you ? Want to collabro ? You also laulyg. I dare you to fly to kl and sell your creativity lol.

ok susugetah..
i've post my thread before in art and design about
Designer who wanna make money in TEES industry
but none of them really interested in doing this..

I see u have a good performance to do this and i believe you can do this.
But you need ur friends helps would share the starting money and help you to set your own Clothing Line..

I believe if you open new Clothing Line you can make money easily..

so people will get to know ur Clothing Line..

I can build u a new Clothing Line and provide you

You handle it you manage it you make marketing for it..

I can help you do the marketing and advertisement

But mainly you've to manage it too..

How?

you can try using laulyg's technique by replacing other stuff to hold the glass. ( lightbox )
I'm not sure about the price as in total up but I think you can start silkscreening with less than rm100 if you diy the tools ( maybe less than that lol )

photo emulsion rm26
frame and silkscreen around RM7 ( The frame alone without the silk is rm4.50 A3 , and the silk you can buy in kamdar 1 metre for rm5.90 )
for the lightbox I use rm8 for the ring light , rm12 for the a2 glass , and other stuff.

actually for squeegees you can use those vipers for car windows.

or you can buy one from vision art , around rm95 - above for one A3 lightbox.

Ive just realized how cold my reply is doh.gif , hahahahaha rclxms.gif good luck in trying !

Hmmm...
Thanks lauyg..
But i'm not sure if my tukang jahit boleh buat macam tu..
hehehe
But i'll ask them..
Btw thanks 4 ur info...

Lauyg and susugetah i got offer for u...

I know this event organizer and he's organizing many event and some of the big event he'll be handle it and do marketing for it..

i've talk to him yesterday to join his to be his
Official T-Shirt Printer and Manufacture

My task is finding new talent Designer to help them
to build their very own Local Independent Clothing Line...

and you'll be join the organizer for every event they organize by opening your very own booth to sell your merchandise..
=)

and if you're really good at if i'll offer them so you could be their Official Local Independent Clothing
so your LOGO will be printed in every their Flyers and Poster
This will make people get to know you better and you can boost up your sales...

I dont know why..But its hard to find a Designer that wanna make money..=)

Some of them are very talanted but lazy to think about gaining money..

Art people mostly do their Design for passion and not for money..

Seem like a reasonable price.

What is
Photo Emulsion?

Lol. Squeegee from the car viper? Why not the windows cleaner? Should be cheaper ;D

I go conduct more reasearch on it first.

car viper , window viper its the same lah ! lol.
photo emulsion is a chemical , sensitive to light. its the cream you apply on the screen when you burn the image on the screen , the image will wash out when you cuci the screen.

then you print the image on your shirt !

of course theres always a reason why I tell him to use that viper/ squeegee window kan ?

squeegee window lagi senang diguna dan bersih. sebab dia pakai handle.

hang pakai ruler lagi cepat kotor tangan kalau kita yang noob ni pakai mesti photo emulsion penuh kat tangan.
Tau la you pro kan pakai ruler trus kaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan.

You can use ruler but not advisable , in ikea squeegee is only rm1.90 you can even find cheap cheap ones at the stores.
but if you want to use ruler also , get the metal ones biggrin.gif

hi susugetah, i got a blok made from a friend and i tried to do some silkscreen with it using rubber ink.

my question; how come the t-shirt somehow is "lekat" together with the blok and this eventually damages the print on the tee. you know, texture isn't perfect.

is it wet when you put it on the shirt ?
this always happen when you over put the rubber ink on the wood block and as you pull the ink onto your silkscreen wood block it'll leak and bleed on the shirt.

*UPDATE How to silkscreen without lightbox ?
user posted image
silkscreen frame ,
rm4.50 for a3
for the silk , rm5.90 from kamdar

fabric paint rm2 also can get tongue.gif
photo emulsion vision art rm25 plus sensitizer rm6.50

nope , no need. if theres any error , the screen still can be used smile.gif
if youre still confuse , you can look for the video in youtube !
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cnu1GICScks

you use normal paper and cooking oil ! tongue.gif
yeah you can make diy lightbox , i use two thick silkscreen frame to make mine.
dont bother asking other lowyat forumers for help with the lightbox ,
i did once and they started bragging about them making lightbox and
obviously not helping me with my lightbox. i got very irritated.

Anyway lol out of topic , in the end i made my own lightbox with only rm30
i think. or you can get the vision art lightbox for rm95

user posted image

i use my own used silkscreen frame to combine and made a frame out from it
and i use a flat piece of wood so i can put my ringlight to it, the glass costed
me around rm12 , the ringlight around rm10 ( rm8 for the ring light ) and most
of the stuff i found around the house hahahaha basically i just korek and use whatever i have.

quite mafan tho , but it's fun makng your own lightbox smile.gif
good luck !
user posted image

This is photo emulsion , i recommend socomask , ( its the black container , the emulsion is purple )
I bought the emulsion from somewhere in kl i cant remember ._. and the green bottle ,
the emulsion is in red. the red version is good , but make sure your silk have smaller holes.
lol must use expensive silk.I'll upload the other picture later.

ok .
tapi saya rasa org kat kamdar ipoh nie
bengap2 skit.

sebab i pernah try wat dulu.
tapi bila i apply emulsion kat kain yg mcm jaring.
emulsion tebus dan byk yang meleleh keluar..
after i nak cuci frame.
blok x jdi. abis terkopek semua ..

nasib jumpa toturial yg berguna nie.
sempoi la ang pkai viper..
idea yg bagus.

aku rase ang la master of diy silkscreen.

may i ask, sensitizer is used for wat? Once the image burned on the silk screen, will we able to clean off the burned image and use another image to burn on the silkscreen?

the sanitizer is used to mix with the photo emulsion, its has a specific ration to mix. There are also premix emulsion that dun need to mix with sanitizer.

Once the image burn on the silkscreen, we able to clean up by shooting via water compressor or traditional method to use clorox bleach.

Hope this help.

Not sure with the ratio , but you need to mix it until its turqoise in color.

the ratio for sanitizer and a bottle of emulsion is like, a bottle of sanitizer for a bottle of emulsion.

For small amount of mixture u just agak2 until the color become purple-grey-brown.

So careful, once mixed, they are very sensitive to light, dont exposed the mixture to open light source.

Yes I use both metal ruler and squeegee , you can get squeegee in any kedai runcit , ace hardware store and giant.

The desk lamp technique is not very good unless it's super super bright ( or just do this in a dark room , and yes it does make a big difference i just dont know how to explain why tongue.gif hehehe) just make sure you have a piece of glass on top of it.

Good luck ! rclxms.gif

any fabric paint is okay , I used rubber paint so it'll last longer but a bucket of rubber paint would cost too much for a small project.
I use fabric paint before , it'll last quite awhile if you apply properly. tongue.gif

rubber paint only comes in buckets? sweat.gif
where to get rubber paint? how much does a bucket cost?
am actually thinking of starting a small home based t-shirt business, already have a few designs
decided that if i can print it myself then i wouldnt have to bother with dealing with printers nod.gif
what paint do you recommend? would prefer something that lasts long is durable and doesnt produce any weird smells once the t-shirt make contact with sweat tongue.gif
(have had some experience with new custom t-shirts that smell funky when designs makes contact with sweat)

silkscreen mesh from kamdar is so much cheaper.

photo emulsion rm26
frame and silkscreen around RM7 ( The frame alone without the silk is rm4.50 A3 , and the silk you can buy in kamdar 1 metre for rm5.90 )
for the lightbox I use rm8 for the ring light , rm12 for the a2 glass , and other stuff.

actually for squeegees you can use those vipers for car windows.

or you can buy one from vision art , around rm95 - above for one A3 lightbox.

why you jual so mahal ?

hahahaha terima kasih sapik tongue.gif
best if you pilih the one yang paling sensitive , burns faster and image clearer. I recommend socomask , but fairbro is pretty good also. just that sometimes the ratio nak mix ngan sensitizer confusing , i'll say 3 drops sensitizer:5 scoops of emulsion

mannnnn , lama gila tak check this thread lol ! it has been months since i checked on the thread ! and i dah lama tak silkscreen.

btw , anyone interested in other style of printmaking ? if theres any seminar coming up i will definitely put it up in this thread.

dye clog in between the mesh is normal, because you exposed the block to air, the dye will keras.
u still need to wash the block with soap, but dont forget to put hardener to your block before print.

Hiii~~!!!!

Stumble on your awesome thread!!!

Can I ask you some questions?

1. I wanted to buy the photo emulsion from http://www.khailien.com.my, but don't really get what is on the website. How to choose the right one? Thank you!

2. Maybe you can tell me how to choose the sensitizer?

Thank you!

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Just to double check my understanding:
1. prepare the light box and other stuff.
2. draw on a paper. Put on the glass layer and put some oil.
3. prepare the screen, scoop the emulsion and mix with the sensitizer, spread it on the screen using (squeegee?), have to be thin, then blow dry with hairdryer.
4. place on the oiled paper, layer with a black paper, put weight on it for 7 min.
5. wash it up with water.

is it like this?

Thank you!

yes its like that , you dont really need a squeegee. metal ruler also can biggrin.gif

for the emulsion , if you stay around subang // kl area you can get your emulsion from art friend in gardens // vision art in sunway
I think khailien sangat jauh tongue.gif its all the way in bangi and cheras.

i recommend socomask , ( its the black container , the emulsion is purple )
I bought the emulsion from somewhere in kl i cant remember ._.

can get it from here http://www.haikuang.com//index.php?option=...tid=12&Itemid=3

Hi,

just to share smile.gif

Khai lien have many type of emulsion, there are for t-shirt(garment), pvc, metal etc.
the best for you is to drop by their shop and ask them.

i'v used khai lien emulsion, they have the purple (come with sanitizer), pink(premix with sanitizer), and green(come with sanitizer)

the best is the purple, it can give you very sharp image.

But compare than khai lien, hai kuang gives you a cheaper price for the purple emulsion.
i still using the hai kuang(socomask)

hello Yang =)

how we got the images on to the screen is cause of the sensitive emulsion. Just like film in film camera , you can't expose your film to light cause it will be exposed. Thats how it works with the emulsion , the black part of the images blocks the light from entering the screen and thats how your image can be burn on to the screen.

the list of things you need is on the first page =D

Hi,

just to share  smile.gif

Khai lien have many type of emulsion, there are for t-shirt(garment), pvc, metal etc.
the best for you is to drop by their shop and ask them.

i'v used khai lien emulsion, they have the purple (come with sanitizer), pink(premix with sanitizer), and green(come with sanitizer)

the best is the purple, it can give you very sharp image.

But compare than khai lien, hai kuang gives you a cheaper price for the purple emulsion.
i still using the hai kuang(socomask)

good reviews ! I shall put it on the first page wink.gif
