Hey guys I have some querries regarding the CGPA in monash. A few passes in the units would drag down my CGPA very much. so in the end lets say i have 3 passes and all HD my CGPA would be around 3.375. with WAM around 87. SO i would be getting a First class Honours degree regardless of the low CGPA? WOuldn't it be weird? Employess actually look at the CGPA right?. Another question is whether the pass units could be retaken in order to increase the CGPA or it doesn't really matters? I'm doing undergraduate business degree. Thanks in advance.

Not all companies look at the CGPA. Mostly, in Malaysia, companies look at your CGPA but in Australia, they look at your WAM as well. If you are doing an undergraduate at monash, there is no first , second or third class honours as it is a 3 year basic undergraduate course.

Also, I don't think a CGPA of 3.3 is low. If you calculate it, the CGPA bears almost the same weight as your WAM.

For example, if you get marks of 50, 87, 91, 80. You get a WAM of 79.5 ( (50 + 87 + 91 + 80 ) / 4) and a GPA of 3.25 ( (4 + 4 + 4 + 1) / 4) -- HD get a mark of 4 /4, D: 3/4, C: 2/4, P: 1/4 etc.

Multiplying the GPA to 100%, you get a mark of roughly 81.25

I do agree in that but however if the grades are 80,80,80 50 then the average weighting would be 72.5 which is a big difference to 81.25. Second question is since it's a basic monash undergraduate degree, How is it classified?

A general Bachelor Degree from Australia does not have any classification. It's just simple as Bachelor of Commere. No classification of class or anything. To know how you have fared people would have to look at your official transcript and see your CGPA and WAM. In Australia people would mostly look at the WAM while in other places it's up to their preferences.

Oh, you are right about the difference. However, you should take into consideration the fact that the degree is a 3 year course = 6 semesters. So it is pretty hard for someone to have such erratic results every semester..

On the other hand, I personally think a CGPA of 3 and above is rather good to begin with and is definitely what most people try to acheive.

Ah, about your second question. After graduating, you are just a graduate from that degree. It would be classified as whether you are a degree holder or not and possibly your results from that duration. Unlike engineering, which is a 4 year course, all other undergraduate degree in monash is just a basic one. You continue with a Honours degree (an additional year) after graduating, if you want.

You cannot resit. You can retake it although I am not sure if it will be accredited to your final result. Also, you should now that with every retake, if gets added up into your CGPA as well. So instead of 8 units a semester, if you retake: your transcript will show 9 units for that semester.

Actually, WAM isn't calculated that easily... It's plus or minus a few points compared to the method u used... I thought it was like that but it isn't... got some complicated formula involved... Same for the GPA calculation as well... rclxub.gif rclxub.gif

WAM= Σ (1st year marks x unit credit points x 0.5) + Σ (later year marks x unit credit points)
Σ (1st year credit points x 0.5) + Σ (later year credit points)

GPA= Σ (unit credit points x unit score)
Σ unit credit points

What programme is she from?
Unless she has done the additional Honours year, Australian three year Bachelor Degrees are not classified into Honours.
Even if you get a CGPA 4.0 and WMA 85 or you get a CGPA 2.0 and WMA 50.0 you still get the same Pass Bachelor Degree.

Anyway most Honours in Monash are awarded according to the Weighted Average and how it is classified differs according to faculty you would have to check the specific programme.Automatic Honours are only for programmes that are 4 years in length or longer. 3 year programmes need to undergo 1 more additional Honours year which can only be undertaken upon invitation by the Uni so you need to have decent results for that.

and mostly after surfing through several of the Monash faculty websites on Honours it seems mostly a credit average is needed for the lowest level of Honours with some the specific average changing from year to year based on some formula and some setting it at a credit average of 65% etc. check your faculty webpage to see specific info on it. Usually lower than those you get a Pass Degree like any other that didn't undergo Honours year.

Basically yeah.Unless the programme is a 4 year or longer programme like Engineering,Medicine etc. that has Automatic Honours then there will be a difference with the top scorers getting first class, average people earning second class Division A or Division B but other 3 year programmes like business, the majority of students will not undergo the additional Honours year and will just graduate with a simple pass degree entitled Bachelor of Business and Commerce for example without any indication of class.Future employers will have to look at your official transcript in order to know how well you have done in the programme.

Sunway Monash is on a nationwide road show in major towns. Special emphasis is on Medic but I believe other queries would be entertained.
